Just looked in here and thought that. The shop sign seems to say TJ's on the 2nd.

I'm well impressed.....some of you are very close!

1st one is the corner of Lime Street and London Road - photographer with his back to St Georges Hall, 2nd is London Road at the junction of Anson Street - where the Lidl is now!

Boss photos though, love all the old stuff.

Couldn't get those myself! Nice tho mate, interesting to see..

let's have a before and after. Please correct me if I'm wrong on these...

about the same spot on google street view - here

and again, about the same spot... here

would never ever have gotten that second one, the only thing that is still the same in both photos is the tower on top of the building on the corner of prescot street

Here's another cracker of Ranelagh Street with Central station on the right, looking up towards the Adelphi.

Think that's South John Street looking towards Canning Place and South Castle Street

Thinking about it, that shot must have been taken from Paradise Street, with South John St. and then South Castle St. cutting through

was the factory chimney Bear Brand ? if it is it must be stuck in my memory bank because we lived in the heights in the mid 60s until I was about 3 before moving to Speke.

Some interesting stuff here... http://www.workhouses.org.uk/index.html?WestDerby/WestDerby.shtml

If you drill down to Deysbrook House, that's where Melwood is partly on.

The road running from left to right is Deysbrook Lane. Deysbrook farm on the map I remember as a kid as Longleys farm. (Vic Gill might remember this). We used to buy our eggs from here and they had a big old orchard round the back that if you walked along the stream (Deys Brook) you could then climb over the wall at the back and nick the apples.

Ash Terrace and further up off the map was a set of old back to back terrace houses, in one of which lived briefly http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Margaret_Kelly_Leibovici when she moved to Liverpool. obit here.. http://www.telegraph.co.uk/news/obituaries/1471732/Margaret-Kelly.html
(I think she was the only claim to fame and the bright lights that West Derby ever had, other than the dairy just round the corner of  Leyfield road with the lady with the real peg leg, just like Long John Silver)

Didn't stop them demolishing all of this in about 62-3 or so. Great place to play at night then, if a bit spooky at times unless the night watchman saw you  (does anyone remember them, the Cocky Watchmen with their coke braziers and little hut at night on building sites? This was the days before Group 4 or whatever they call themselves these days) or a Black Maria cruised past. The Corporation then put up these 15 storey flats which I see have also now long been demolished, I heard concrete cancer, but they must have offered fantastic views over Melwood.

Don't know if this has been posted before... http://www.merseysideviews.com/
or this...    http://www.inacityliving.piczo.com/?cr=7 ...absolutely brilliant.

And this is a pretty good old map for getting references from http://www.leverpoole.co.uk/liverpool-1930.shtm
and this  for backgound detail on Street Names... http://www.liverpoolpictorial.co.uk/streetnames.htm

I do remeber it well mate, used to play there with my mates and I've been chased by the cocky watchmen on the site and the gamekeepers on the Croxteth Hall estate, great days.

I have tride to put a very old photo of Melwood up but it is not accepted (File too large).

On the opposite side of Melwood Drive and Melwood itself, Deysbrook Lane, there used to be the married quarters for the army barracks (REME) which was situated on the corner of Deysbrook Lane and Princess Drive.

I lived  just near the triangle by the junction of Deysbrook and Melwood. I'm not kidding, that triangle saw more football matches than Anfield. :) Total bedlam.
Looking at in now it seems so tiny, but we'd sometimes have 15 or more of us kids playing there all day Sunday and in the evenings till it got dark, playing with one of those red plastic balls, like kicking a balloon, bought from Arnells for less than a shilling, but just one goal.

From Google maps it looks like the married quarters houses are still there, or the road is, but the playing fields and barracks have long gone. I do remember a gang of us walking round the back of the playing fields via the stream about 1965 and getting onto the golf course and searching for lost golf balls. I think we tried to sell some back to some golfer we saw but we got threatened so legged it quick.

Did you ever go and see the matches on the REME playing fields back in the early 60's?
Some of those were absolutely brutal, but great fun to watch.

Sadly, it's been too long for me to really recognise many from that era. I was only born in 55, so all of those lads would be a lot older than me.
We also moved from Melwood late 1967 so many things are now fading.
The tall guy on the far right looks like a guy called Kelly I remember who lived up Melwood near the junction with Minver.
But what I recall was he was a Ted in the days of Beatniks, just prior to the Merseybeat boom, so I'm not sure he would be into playing football, more motorbikes.
The lad with the glasses also looks familiar. Did he have a lightweight racing push bike and go tearing up and down Melwood?
And the lad in the front 3rd from the left, his face too looks familiar, but I'm sorry, I couldn't name him.

I worked in the Cunard Building as well mate. Avarto services selling gas and electricity over the phone or rather phoning up people and being told to fuck off 300 times a day, very soul destroying.

Things havent changed here much then. I'm in there right now, selling Bupa Health Assessements, and getting told to fuck off about 200 times a day.

Prior to that i worked selling Orange Broadband in the same place, only this time i'd be told to fuck off at least 600 times a day.
