Anyone who dismisses 'folk music' out of hand is missing out on some really good stuff - quite apart from Kate Rusby and the aforementioned Cara Dillon there are so many great singers who fall under the folk umbrella - Emily Portman, Maz O'Connor, Eliza Carthy, Kris Drever, Julie Fowlis, Alasdair Roberts, Jon Boden and Karine Polwart to name but a few along with bands like Bellowhead, Lau, Oysterband, Steeleye Span and the incomparable Show of Hands. Forget the 'finger in the ear Arran sweater' image - British Folk music is alive and thriving and producing wonderful new music alongside keeping alive traditional songs.

All dull

Would have loved to have gotten involved, but frankly it's an impossible task to select a top 10/20/100 etc

Certainly does seem to be for most in the thread. That said, there's many in the thread who felt the same but have given it a good go. As it is I'm lucky I don't have that problem. I can look back through my 30 and I know there's only another 20 or so which vie with those I've listed as my all time favourites. There are thousands more I guess which I love - even more now that I've listened to some of the recommendations in here [including a couple from The Fall you'll be pleased to know Filler lad  ;D] - but I don't think any displace the 50 or so I'm fixed on. Mind you as I have said things can and do change from time to time.

Which is your favourite REM album Chip?

Document or Murmur

But.... Monster is the most underrated multi million selling album of all time. I have a massive soft spot for it. I turned 13 the week after it came out, it was everywhere.

Ok, as requested, here's my list again with (I hope) youtune vids embedded
1. Supper's ready - Genesis

Had to choose this - it's like 6 songs in 1 for a start and the creativity and musicianship is mind blowing. What a shame Genesis ended up the way they did!

<a href="https://www.youtube.com/v/szJq1lwnkNw" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer" class="bbc_link bbc_flash_disabled new_win">https://www.youtube.com/v/szJq1lwnkNw</a>

2. Since I've been loving you - Led Zeppelin

First band I ever saw live, nearly 50 years ago. Still the best. Hard to choose one, but this showcases Jimmy's guitar and Robert's voice

<a href="https://www.youtube.com/v/K8R7zjJMIfU" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer" class="bbc_link bbc_flash_disabled new_win">https://www.youtube.com/v/K8R7zjJMIfU</a>

3. Close to the edge - Yes

Again, unbelievable musicianship and stunning changes of mood and pace. I never tire of listening to this.

<a href="https://www.youtube.com/v/51oPKLSuyQY" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer" class="bbc_link bbc_flash_disabled new_win">https://www.youtube.com/v/51oPKLSuyQY</a>

4. Who knows where the time goes - Fairport Convention

Sandy Denny wrote this when she was 19. To my ears, the best English singer ever...and Fairport are still touring. Don't miss them if you get the chance.

<a href="https://www.youtube.com/v/OkOB57UcYk8" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer" class="bbc_link bbc_flash_disabled new_win">https://www.youtube.com/v/OkOB57UcYk8</a>

5. Comfortably numb - Pink Floyd

That guitar solo.

<a href="https://www.youtube.com/v/vi7cuAjArRs" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer" class="bbc_link bbc_flash_disabled new_win">https://www.youtube.com/v/vi7cuAjArRs</a>

6. Sympathy for the devil - The Rolling Stones

The Stones at their best.

<a href="https://www.youtube.com/v/GgnClrx8N2k" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer" class="bbc_link bbc_flash_disabled new_win">https://www.youtube.com/v/GgnClrx8N2k</a>

7. Me and Bobby McGhee - Janis Joplin

Janis sings 'I'd trade all of my tomorrows for one more yesterday' - she was dead before the song was released. It still chokes me up when she sings that line.

<a href="https://www.youtube.com/v/c7CtqwyxHM0" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer" class="bbc_link bbc_flash_disabled new_win">https://www.youtube.com/v/c7CtqwyxHM0</a>

8. Tangled up in blue - Bob Dylan

How to choose one Bob Dylan song? 'Blood on the tracks' is probably his greatest album and this is a stand out track but I could have chosen any of 20 songs

<a href="https://www.youtube.com/v/QKcNyMBw818" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer" class="bbc_link bbc_flash_disabled new_win">https://www.youtube.com/v/QKcNyMBw818</a>

9. Anarchy in the UK - The Sex Pistols

I remember seeing the Pistols do this on 'So it goes' and the venom with which Johnny Rotten sang it was palpable - the audience looked absolutely stunned. Mesmerising.

<a href="https://www.youtube.com/v/cBojbjoMttI" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer" class="bbc_link bbc_flash_disabled new_win">https://www.youtube.com/v/cBojbjoMttI</a>

10. Thunder Road - Bruce Springsteen

Classic Bruce - cars and girls and a great story.

<a href="https://www.youtube.com/v/YdhkaPZtQF4" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer" class="bbc_link bbc_flash_disabled new_win">https://www.youtube.com/v/YdhkaPZtQF4</a>

11. Strawberry Fields Forever - The Beatles

Again - how do you choose 1 Beatles song?

<a href="https://www.youtube.com/v/HtUH9z_Oey8" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer" class="bbc_link bbc_flash_disabled new_win">https://www.youtube.com/v/HtUH9z_Oey8</a>

12. London Calling - The Clash

If there was one band I wish I'd seen live it'd be the Clash. Their early stuff was so exciting and they managed to retain that when they became a bit more polished with this classic.

<a href="https://www.youtube.com/v/EfK-WX2pa8c" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer" class="bbc_link bbc_flash_disabled new_win">https://www.youtube.com/v/EfK-WX2pa8c</a>

13. Cousin Jack - Show of Hands

Steve Knightley has been called 'the gravel voiced spokesman of the rural poor' and this is probably the best example of his storytelling in a tale of emigration from his native Devon.

<a href="https://www.youtube.com/v/2crNNwmUZtU" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer" class="bbc_link bbc_flash_disabled new_win">https://www.youtube.com/v/2crNNwmUZtU</a>

14. Let there be rock - Drive By Truckers

The Truckers are such an underrated band. I love this song - a story about Lynyrd Skynyrd.

<a href="https://www.youtube.com/v/Z3Mo9UK-Nfc" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer" class="bbc_link bbc_flash_disabled new_win">https://www.youtube.com/v/Z3Mo9UK-Nfc</a>

15. Voodoo chile - Jimi Hendrix

Another posthumous release. Incredible guitar playing - what would he have become if he'd not died so tragically?

<a href="https://www.youtube.com/v/IZBlqcbpmxY" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer" class="bbc_link bbc_flash_disabled new_win">https://www.youtube.com/v/IZBlqcbpmxY</a>

16. The Killing Moon - Echo and the Bunnymen

Ian McCulloch used to sit a few rows in front of me in the Main Stand - I never did get the courage to speak to him - I could have told him how good this song is, but i suspect he'd already know!

<a href="https://www.youtube.com/v/LWz0JC7afNQ" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer" class="bbc_link bbc_flash_disabled new_win">https://www.youtube.com/v/LWz0JC7afNQ</a>

17. Oliver's Army - Elvis Costello

A great song from a fellow Red. I could have chosen one of many.

<a href="https://www.youtube.com/v/LrjHz5hrupA" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer" class="bbc_link bbc_flash_disabled new_win">https://www.youtube.com/v/LrjHz5hrupA</a>

18. Beeswing - Richard Thompson

I couldn't decide whether to go for acoustic or electric for RT. He's just about my favourite electric guitarist, but this song showcases both his songwriting and his acoustic playing. He's also a really funny man when you see him in concert.

<a href="https://www.youtube.com/v/YsKEMZW8VmE" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer" class="bbc_link bbc_flash_disabled new_win">https://www.youtube.com/v/YsKEMZW8VmE</a>

19. Black Sabbath - Black Sabbath

The song that invented Heavy Metal? Terrifying.

<a href="https://www.youtube.com/v/ISXnYu-Or4w" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer" class="bbc_link bbc_flash_disabled new_win">https://www.youtube.com/v/ISXnYu-Or4w</a>

20. Fortunate Son - Creedence Clearwater Revival

John Fogerty wrote so many great songs. The first album I bought was 'Cosmo's Factory'. This is actually off 'Willy and the poorboys' and is a great song from the Vietnam War era.

<a href="https://www.youtube.com/v/ec0XKhAHR5I" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer" class="bbc_link bbc_flash_disabled new_win">https://www.youtube.com/v/ec0XKhAHR5I</a>

21. Hard loving man - Deep Purple

'Deep Purple in Rock' is one of my favourite albums - I love the guitar freak out at the end.

<a href="https://www.youtube.com/v/93pE3npDRRs" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer" class="bbc_link bbc_flash_disabled new_win">https://www.youtube.com/v/93pE3npDRRs</a>

22. The green fields of France - The Men They Couldn't Hang

I spent a couple of holidays touring the Somme area of France and this song really sums up the futility and waste of young lives in the Great War.

The video for this is my own creation

<a href="https://www.youtube.com/v/Am9rYmAtmfQ" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer" class="bbc_link bbc_flash_disabled new_win">https://www.youtube.com/v/Am9rYmAtmfQ</a>

23. Ghost love score - Nightwish

You really need to listen to the live version from Wacken 2013 to hear this at its best - with the amazing Floor Jansen on vocals, I always get goosebumps when she hits that note at the end. Fantastic.

<a href="https://www.youtube.com/v/JYjIlHWBAVo" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer" class="bbc_link bbc_flash_disabled new_win">https://www.youtube.com/v/JYjIlHWBAVo</a>

24. The last English King - Big Big Train

If ever a band deserved greater recognition it's these guys. Wonderful musicians and some great songs.

<a href="https://www.youtube.com/v/Gr5TitWKexQ" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer" class="bbc_link bbc_flash_disabled new_win">https://www.youtube.com/v/Gr5TitWKexQ</a>

25. Never buy the Sun - Billy Bragg

Billy says it all

<a href="https://www.youtube.com/v/6uWw7kuiCss" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer" class="bbc_link bbc_flash_disabled new_win">https://www.youtube.com/v/6uWw7kuiCss</a>

It's a fucking belting tune.

Got to agree entirely Sam lad.

I invested a lot of time into Dexys back in the day inspired by Van’s Celtic quests and believing Dexys might provide some further valuable musical inroads into the genre. Needless to say it proved pretty much fruitless as they didn’t have any other stuff that for me came close to matching their two classics.

That said, the amazing Geno and Eileen remain high water marks to grace anybody’s top 50 faves. Moreover, the fact they are so far above the level of the rest of Dexys and Kev Rowlands song pantheon is testament to just how difficult the creation of truly great songs is and how much we should value and cherish those true greats who have proven down the years that they can and have managed that elusive goal.

I love the production on Document, it's a great sounding album - and has great singles. First of the 6(?) Scott Litt albums too - he just fit them perfectly at the time.

Think filler will correct me if I'm wrong - but there's a theory that the first Sonic Youth album you hear will always be your favourite Sonic Youth album and all your other listening to them will be biased by that. Think REM are similar for me - when I was getting into music they were the biggest band on earth. I think all my listening to them is biased a bit towards that golden radio singles period from 87 to 95. They also had about 4 careers.  Love them probably more now than I did at any point.

Ah it was very sudden and sad, when it happened a few of our old crowd got together for night and listened through some of the old albums with a few drinks etc was a great night reminiscing.
Particular favs of mine are Trouble Come Down, O, Suffering, Criminal Justice by Satchel and Battle Flag and Fires Comin Down by Pigeonhed.

Yes! That's a beauty, on the "Beautiful Girls" soundtrack.

Timbo, I hope your heel and thumbs are healing nicely. Great shout on "Into Your Arms" on your list. Give this one a spin, pal.

Nothing wrong with the occasional bit of Giorgio Moroder

It's really not.

Been to hardly any weddings, the types I hang out with generally don't do weddings.

I missed the bit about putting on a link, so here goes, also revised my list somewhat. Having read Timbo's big post I found myself regretting my effort somewhat as I found it a really difficult thing to do somehow. I just think with music it's such a personal thing, which is as much about how you feel on a particular day. I change my mind completely about my taste anyway, yet if I was choosing my fav ten books I would find that quite easy to do. Music on the other hand I feel is much more difficult. But thanks for the idea Timbo.

Does she have the squeeze, the skids, big country on it. If she does I swear I’ve never met her  :o

Nope, her taste doesn't stretch to those.

Is he okay? I'd noticed he hadn't been on since the announcement.

Had a couple of PM's off him this week, he's kicking about the site still. Its got to be hard for people like him, he stopped going when Ashley shit all over Keegan and the day he dreamed of turned into a nightmare. There's a lot of name calling being thrown at Newcastle fans and its not on, as far as I'm concerned, to tar all Geordies with the same brush. Be a shame if we lost him from the site, he's a good lad.

I totally agree with you on that, seen a few Newcastle fans saying similar things and it's not easy. I hope he stays around anyway. Sorry Timbo will stop now.

[flashhttp://I Heard It Through The Grapevine – Creedence

<a href="https://youtube.com/v/ixqofv-Oi74" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer" class="bbc_link bbc_flash_disabled new_win">https://youtube.com/v/ixqofv-Oi74</a>

I daresay it constitutes a sacrilege to select any version of this fantastic song over Marvin’s classic. Maybe so, but for me it’s always been Creedence’s eleven minute long bass overdrive take. Hypnotic. Sorry Marvin purists.

I'm with you there. Marvin's Grapevine is one of the greatest pop/soul singles ever and you'd think it'd be an impossible song to cover, yet Creedence really pulled it off, it builds and builds and builds to the point  you get so lost in the groove it take on it's own life, becoming it's own entity that you forget it was ever Marvin's song.  (Fogerty pronouncing 'heard' as 'hoid' slighty irritates me though haha)

Oh and the Slits version was great too.

I haven’t seen Laura brannigan yet or Giorgio Moroder yet. It won’t end well  ;D ;D
I'm just assuming that Giorgio Moroder and Phil Oakey's Together In Electric Dreams will be  the consensus pick for #1.
