So with us and Arsenal both having par 1s at the weekend, we have to match their result to stay ahead of them. Hopefully their midweek exertions will take their toll.

Their final two games are both par 3s. Relegated Sunderland at home and Everton at home. Everton will battle hard to win the much-coveted Liverpool-didn't-get-champions-league Cup and Sunderland have already been relegated for a reason.

If it was Sunderland on Saturday then Stoke on Tuesday night for them I would be much more confident.

The good news is it's still in our hands, the bad news is that it's still in our hands.

Relegation APLT: Week 37

A bit early on this one but seeing as the relegation battle is effectively over and the 2 remaining games this weekend (W.Ham and Watford) are par 0's - meaning they cannot drop points even if they loose - I thought I'd post this now....I'll update it on Tuesday.

Besides, after the Liverpool game will not be thinking about this ...regardless of the result.
Come on you Reds!!!!

Edit: Updated Table after midweek games

Looks good to me, although hopefully we can take third rather than fourth place. saying that, though, either would be brilliant and either would be a sign of progress.

Interesting to see where the big slumps are - there's really only us between weeks 14 to 22, and Arsenal doing similar half-a-dozen games later.  The others either had no slump at all (Chelsea and Spurs) or have been pretty crap consistently all through the season (the Manchester clubs).

City in particular, it's just as well for them they built up that early +6 because they've been phoning it in ever since until the last couple of weeks.

I don't know how much you can read from that across to next season, but it presumably suggests those two have more reason to worry than us or Arsenal.

Looking good. Just have to avoid defeat to Sydney in Game 39 and we'll secure that top 4 spot  :P

Thanks for doing this all season. Chelsea were ridiculously good - once they switched to 3 at the back they never dipped below the 90 points line.

Just that January effect did us, otherwise we could have got second. This season Chelsea were unstoppable and ultra consistent, fair play to Conte.

Next season might be different?

As ever, many thanks to Prof and everyone else who has contributed to the thread. Just goes to show how unfortunate Arsenal were and how competitive it was at the top that there are 5 teams well clear of the 71 point line and the Mancs were nowhere near despite being only 2 points below it.

Two periods totalling 25 out of 38 games of championship winning football sandwiching a period of crap. Much to be excited by. Much to be annoyed by. Overall, very good.

Thanks Prof.

So Arsenal can be a little miffed at missing the top four with their points tally (well above the green line), but a huge change-up from last year where they scrapped in right on the green line but were second on the table.

Thanks to Prof for the hard work of charting another season.

Everyone's record in 1-pointers is remarkably similar.  It's those pesky 3 pointers we need to be more consistent with to climb further up the table, and that points to our lack in quality depth.

Question is, should the 71-point line be reviewed to next season? Except Arsenal, the top 6 seems now to be relative stable before the next season, with Man U, Man City and Chelsea now having managers who can work through the summer and really get their message across. We can say that this season was a bit of a historical "freak" when it comes to the points needed for top 4, but just looking at it now, I would not expect any of the top 6 to drop in performance (except maybe Arsenal if there is a change, and there can be arguments for Chelsea and maybe us because of European Football)

This has been great.

It might be interesting to spend the summer improving the system though. In particular getting some long run stats into the model would be good (as well as some weights like Autumn, Christmas and early spring results over time).
