The defending when he heads dit back to Kelleher was incredible.
No, jazz. You fear jazz. You fear the lack of rules, the lack of boundaries. Oh look, it's a fence. But, no, it's soft.

He was absolutely immense today. Lovely nod back to Kelleher. made several blocks, and appeared to be trying to calm the commotion at full time.

Or he was stirring it up. Either way, I’m happy!

He's still massively underrated by the general footballing community. He makes defending look so easy, gets through pretty much every game looking like he just came back from a nice relaxing walk in the park even if its his 3rd full game in a week. There is not a single defender in the history of football who could do what he does at that level so consistently and effortlessly. At his peak, he was essentially a cheat code defender who could do everything and had the pace to go toe to toe with the fastest forwards on the planet. At 32, he has lost a yard of pace, where, he is still fast, just not quite so domineering, but he has adjusted his game slightly and continues to absolutely dominate his area of the pitch. That header for Kelleher was class, but there were so many during pretty much every game where he just effortlessly wins his duel and plays it first time to someone else. No fuss, just making incredibly difficult things look simple 25 times a game. Its rare to see him having to make 2-3 sliding tackles in a season, let alone each game.
I've watched Baresi and Nesta and Chiellini and Rio and Terry and loads of center backs tagged legendary and none of them were/are anywhere near as good as him. Its just nostalgia and bias that makes you remember them differently.
I can confidently say that he is the best to play in the last 30-35 years at the very least. Before that, I just wouldn't know.

Never seen him have to stretch for so many tackles.

Timed every one to perfection though.

That 1v1 against Haaland kept us in it. No defender in the world can hold him there.

Easy to get complacent about him but he was sensational today - exposed quite a bit but was faultless and so dominiant if they ever tried to hit Haaland early

That one-on-one with Haaland… I don’t see another defender in the world making the freak look so easy to deal with. Unbelievable.

Haaland who?

Virgil was imperious, nothing phased him and his tackling today was incredible. Best defender in the world.
I’ve plenty links to the clubs playing and backroom staff as many on here know thank you very much. Fair enough, I admire your optimism. But you’re absolute ostriches if you think this squad, even with 2 or 3 new, “cut price” players with potential get us anywhere close

He's obviously the greatest defenders in our history. He's got Ron Yates's you-shall-not-pass Colossus figure crossed with Alan Hansen's calmness under pressure with a mix of Lawro's ball playing ability. Except better than all those 3 legendary figures at the best part of their games.

I mean, he's lost one league game at Anfield, FFS  :D

The best I have ever seen. He's as good as he was when he had that electric recovery pace. Instead he's just taken the Maldini approach of seeing things happen 5 seconds before they actually occur.

PL POTY in waiting. The further into this season we get, the better he's getting.  The job he's doing marshalling and elevating these kids is just phenomenal to watch.

Pity our corners were awful yesterday - it was a Virg kind of day if there was any quality to be put in there. Loved his tackle on Foden, even Foden acknowledged it.

No matter what chaos is engulfing the rest of the squad if Virgil plays we have a really good chance in any game and I think he's playing better right now than he was before his injury.  The captaincy suits him and I also think he seems hyper-focussed since Klopp announced it would be his last season.

Simply the best. He's the best defender I have ever seen.
Quote from: Dion Fanning

The chants for Kenny Dalglish that were heard again on Wednesday do not necessarily mean that the fans see him as the saviour. This is not Newcastle, longing for the return of Kevin Keegan. Simply, Dalglish represents everything Hodgson is not and, in fairness, everything Hodgson could or would not hope to be.

He's why we'll win the league.

His contribution to the team is comparable to Steven Gerrard's contribution to Houllier's teams. The difference of course is that the current team is already excellent without Van Dijk. But what he adds to it is immeasurable.

I'm surprised City didn't take Haaland off as he was getting absolutely nothing out of Virgil and Quansah. This game really highlighted how one dimensional Haaland is once he's neutralised.
