Retro gaming at its best and Patrick Moore

The odd episode appeared a few years ago. But dodgy VHS quality. These are tv quality.

A time where Sonic 2 and Mario 2 were the summer blockbusters.

Enjoy the trip down memory lane

A lad I went to school with was on there he played someone on Street Fighter 2 on the SNES for the golden joystick. He won but it didn't record for tv so they had to film again and he lost the rematch.

in one of the episodes he was talking about the upcoming release of Sonic 2 and he says something like "will be sliding into the slots of megadrive owners everywhere"

and in season 2 episode 6, the guy is talking about Sim City and he says "you want to sack the council and lynch the planners?, you got it. you want a massive erection in the middle of the high street?, you got it"

I never understood why Dominik Diamond never went on to do more things on TV, or why he isn't even on TV these days. He's a brilliant presenter. Love his humour, too. Get yourself back on the box, Dom. I still miss Gamesmaster. Loved it.

This was one of those legendary TV moments for it's time. Perry being a show off cock and trying to do the slide shortcut, but completely fucks it up. Of course no one knew at the time that he was trying to do that, but I've recreated that for myself, and if you get it right, you land right at the bottom of the slide. The way Diamond says 'and on that BOMBSHELL!" still cracks me up today.

<a href="http://www.youtube.com/v/UEFr6ACZ8sI" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer" class="bbc_link bbc_flash_disabled new_win">http://www.youtube.com/v/UEFr6ACZ8sI</a>

Another of my favourit memories from the show is the clip starting at 2:42 in this video with Zoe Ball. "A lovely bunch she's got up in front of her there. Oh, no, they've slipped inside her. A couple of men have slipped inside Zoe there, but she's managed to knock one of them off." Zoe's expression on her face says she wasn't impressed. To think this was a kids TV program. :lmao

Dominic Diamond was brilliant. Why on earth try got Dexter Fletcher to do one of the series I'll never know. Did diamond not want to do it?

God, I used to watch Gamesmaster religiously.  What was that one on Sky that was a bit similar?  It had loads of characters that people would play against, and one of them was this hilarious (at the time) pirate or Spaniard or something who would randomly headbutt people.*

It had something to do with the show being sponsored by McNasty's. I think he had some kind of boycott going of the chain, and came to a disagreement. When the show's creator Jane Hewland couldn't find a compromise, Diamond walked.

Surely there would be enough demand for it?

And why is that?

Well if you're just talking about a games show in general, it wouldn't offer anything any more to anyone who would watch it. You can play other people online, you can watch clips on Youtube and you can read up to date news, previews and reviews online.

Also the kind of games you'd get today just wouldn't be conducive to watching. Back then you'd have challenges for games like Super Mario Bros 3, Lotus Challenge, Street Fighter, Bomberman, Goldeneye...

Now what? Most games are too complicated just to put in front of some kid off the street and most people are only interested in the latest FIFA, COD or GTA. How do you do a worthwhile challenge?

Companies also might not be too fond of the idea of their games being butchered by people who don't know how to play.

Brilliant program, when in need of a nostalgia hit I regularly venture to YouTube for Gamesmaster. I'd welcome another games show but as someone else touched upon, there's no point trying to make another Gamesmaster. You'd struggle to find anything more nineties than that.

Footnote on the legend that is Diamond. I'm friends with him on Facebook and if you leave him a comment he'll usually hit you back with a witty reply. I sent him a request years ago when the only available piece of information on his page was "People I've never met who keep adding me cause of Gamesmaster stop. Please." He finally accepted the hordes of requests just so he could promote his new book. Still a legend mind.

I remember having a conversation with Dave Perry about this a few years ago. He said it was hard enough at the time to get GM on the screen in the first place. The problem is not the viewers, he says; it's the TV executives not willing to take a risk on production because they still believe games are for the kind of people who don't get out much, nerds, and in other words, is just too much of a niche to pull in the figures. He said they are all very much still in the dark ages when it comes to things like that. That was a few years ago, mind. Even back then he touched on the notion of the internet killing off gaming publications like the one he was in charge of at the time. He was right. He's now working as a tattoo artist in his own shop. The point is, back when GM was so popular, people watched it because it showed clips news of the upcoming games that the majority of gamers at the time would never get to see otherwise due to the fact that most people just hadn't got the intnernet yet. Now if you want the latest, there are 24 hour news sites that you just click on.

There is only one way GM would ever come back in any shape or form, and that's in episodes for websites, and even then it would be drastically different. It'll never happen. Gaming, and gamers, are just completely different these days.

Ha, nostalgia, love it. Let's be honest though, they were all naff as fuck.

Only thing that would work on tv, or at least be any good, would be some sort of review based/discussion show. And really, there's so much of that stuff out there on any number of websites already.

Only re-watched the first 2 episodes from the first series on Youtbube years ago, just watching episode 3 of series 1

"Next up is a Tennis challenge, and here to pound their balls along the baseline....."

"I hear you've got a firm right hand"

"Join us after the break for some news balls and some soft forehands"

Brilliant.  ;D Remember waiting for Tuesdays to come round to watch this show.

There were talks last year about trying to bring it back in some form. Unless they can get Dominik Diamond back from Canada, Dave "the games animal" Perry and Patrick Moore (maybe a bit old now, so replace him with Brian Blessed) then it would be proper shite

Didn't Dominik Diamond end up going to The Phillipines to get crucified, and then wussed out at the last minute?

Or did I dream that?
