Futurama to Return
« on: January 24, 2006, 01:43:59 pm »
Futurama is to return for four feature-length, straight-to-DVD movies, it has been confirmed.

The cartoon series was axed by broadcast network FOX more than two years ago amid lacklustre ratings but has since performed well in syndication on the Cartoon Network and has sold well on DVD.

Earlier this month it was speculated that the show could follow in the footsteps of Family Guy and come back for a new run of TV episodes but production studio 20th Century Fox TV has now decided to resurrect it via a different medium.

"This Futurama project is a done deal," confirmed Billy West, the voice of Fry, in a post on his website. "Everybody is excited to get back together - as I am!"

Production will begin July or August for a likely release early in 2007

Good news. I'm starting to think it's about time The Simpsons went the same way. Still fine at times, but the new series is a shadow of the peak years between series four-eight.

There is also rumours of Friends coming back together for a few episodes as well. I can't see the point really because if a show ends it should end and not keep coming for extra episodes.

Agree that further Friends would be a bit daft, especially as the closure on the tenth series was a nice way to tie things up. Would be a nailed-on ratings winner so easy to understand if it did reappear. Audiences might get a bit cynical after the seventeenth reunion show though!

I heard about Friends today also -- http://www.hollywood.com/news/detail/id/3477372

Not sure how true it is seeing as the actors are doing new things:

Schwimmer is doing broadway plays i think
Kudrow has a new show on tv, as with 'Joey"
Aniston is doing a load of films these days
Cox (arquette, whatever) has had just had a new baby i think
Perry is doing..something

As for futurama, cant wait. I hope simpsons crumbles when it re-appears, the show is nothing like its old self. I actually cringe from time to time (OVER A CARTOON) when watching.

Its the way with so many American comedy shows sadly, they continue long past their sell by date for nostalgic fans who don't realise that they just aren't funny anymore. For me, the best comedy shows are the ones that ended abruptly before becoming stale, Fawlty Towers, Blackadder rather than Only Fools And Horses which became horribly predicatable at the end.

I'm pleased Futurama is back; it's really under-estimated. As for Friends, I think that got stale after about 3 years, hence why it became more of a soap opera in terms of story development. It really should not come back.

I really do think the Simpsons needs to be axed, loads of good shows which can do well are getting axed but the Simpsons still airs. Surely they have covered all the storylines which people could find remotely funny?

I dont see what the fuss about this programme is to be honest.

I've only watched a few episodes of it, and barely raised a smile. I only posted this because people have been saying they want it to come back on these forums they have anyway. But I have always said once a show ends it should be just that.. the end.

Fantastic news, can't believe noone stepped in after Fox axed it though. I still use loads of phrases that I picked up watching Futurama, "to shreds you say, and his wife how is she taking it.... to shreds you say"

Trailer For The Futurama 'Movie'
Bender and friends return
------------------------------------------------------------------------------
As you're likely aware – or if you're not you're about to be very excited – Futurama, Matt Groening's unjustly cancelled follow up to The Simpsons, is to return to screens. Groening and his crew are producing three feature length episodes which will be released on DVD, the first out by the end of the year, and then cut up into episode length for TV broadcast. You can see the trailer for the first installment, Benders Big Score!, either below or here.

Benders Big Score is set at Xmas (as Christmas has officially been abbreviated to in the future) 3007 and Professor Farnsworth and the rest of the Planet Express crew must battle nudist alien internet scammers who wish to take over Earth. Having discovered the secret to time traveller tattooed on Fry's arse, they reprogram Bender and sent him back in time to steal Earth's treasures.

If this trailer is a mark of the quality of the final product then Futurama will return victorious and we must all buy it so that they might restore it to full series again. We must prevail! On comrades!

http://www.empireonline.com/news/story.asp?NID=21243
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------

Personally, I think this is great news. After a so-so first season, the 2nd to 4th seasons of Futurama was packed full of quality episodes which rivalled The Simpson's in it's hey day

I still can't believe this got cancelled when it was obviously getting better and better, while The Simpson's has continued to become a shadow of it's former self.

If Matt Groening balls' this one up as well he can bite my shiny metal ass
You should make like my pants... and split

The new series came out last summer and has recently continued this summer. Has anyone kept up with it? Thoughts?

The biggest difference I've noticed is that they've fallen victim to the slapstick, in your face humour that everyone else has conformed to. Futurama used to be witty and have decent storylines. Now, it's all about penis jokes, ripping off other film stories (the latest being Minority Report) and changing the character's personalities to over the top stereotypes.

I don't like the new direction they've gone, but my love for Futurama brings me back every week. My friend and I keep saying "it nearly felt like the Futurama of old" on certain episodes and completely lambast the episodes which fail to please us "veteran" fans. I think they speaks volumes in itself.

One time too many?

If they had written X amounts of episodes and it's quality stuff I'd be all for it, but if they're back for the immediate future doing so many episodes per year it could be a struggle and will probably produce some duds. Confident there'll be some good stuff though.

I wonder if it's a coincidence that they announce this on the day the fourth season of Disenchantment is available on Netflix. I was thinking earlier when I was watching the first episodes that I could then watch some old Futurama stuff afterwards. Looking forward to new episodes.

I thought this was a new thread and was a bit confused about people talking about what the Friends cast were up to - then clocked it was from 2006  ;D It does say something that even back then, people were saying The Simpsons was getting stale & unfunny and should finish - and it’s still going 16 years later  :o

No John DiMaggio though, and it's a fair bet some of the Disenchanted writers end up on the project - this already feels cursed. It also feels like a show that overstayed its welcome last time but pulled it back right at the end.
