Caboc, a Scottish double cream cheese rolled in oats. Not sure how prevalent it is down south.

I absolutely love cheese, tend to get a few different types to eat after a roast on a Sunday

A few which are a little unusual (but readily enough available, or at least variants of are available)

- Goats Brie - as the name suggests, are Brie made from goats cheese, same soft, creamy texture but with the slightly more acidic goats cheese.

- Cornish Yarg - midrange cheese in terms of firmness, slightly softer than cheddar with a milder flavour. If you buy it towards the start of the year it’s often wrapped in wild garlic which is amazing, otherwise it’s usuallg nettle which is also good.

Pont- Leveque- a soft, strong cheese, recognisable by its square shape. Absolutely beautiful with a strong red or a glass of port.

There is an English version of dolce latte which I buy a lot of but the name escapes me, if anyone’s interested I can find it out at the weekend when I go and buy more (I always just ask for the English dolce latte and they know what I mean)

I’d seriously suggest going to Bordeaux if you’re into cheese, when we went we managed to find a place calllex Cave du Fromage where you pay a set fee and get to pick a load of cheese from over 100 types which they have in a cave, you can then pull your own bottles of red off a rack and drink them with it, all very reasonably priced.

On that note I’m eating some cheese. ;D

There's far too many out there .

I was right by a goat farm for a bit in Aude , Languedoc and les fromage des chevre was amazing. When on Le Gomera I got into the smoked goats cheese which was delicious dipped into the local mojo which is like a spicey pesto thing. Still convinced on a Saturday morning in Liverpool one cannot beat mature Cheddar on toast with a sliced tomoato and a bit of white pepper on it.

Love cheese but if there's one cheese that I'd pick to at on it's own it would be Manchego.

In a sandwich it has to be a really good cheddar.

And pasta or risotto has to have a bit of parmesan.

Love Manchego, but it's Caerphilly for me.
If you get it right it's like 2 cheeses in one. Like a gooey brie on the outside, with crumbly citrussy harder cheese in the middle. Lovely.

Deep fried Camembert

Throw in the word Electrique it sounds like a Gong Album.

Camembert is nice . I spent time in Lessay in La Manche in Normandy too and the local stuff was gorgeous , especially washed down with zee local cidre .

Some Camembert is way too strong though. There was one with a monks head on in the supermarches that was way too strong . It stunk.

Favourite cheese? How long do you want the list? It would probably be easier to mention cheeses I didn't like. I remember going down to London once and we got a choice of over 45 cheeses to choose from, I'm still amazed I got home that night.  :o

I like lots of cheeses but not blue cheese. As kids we grew up eating lots of Cheshire cheese 'round at our Nan and Grandad's so I still have a soft spot for that.

When those street markets come to Liverpool they often have a cheese stall, and I'll sample loads of them.  :)

It was interesting that just before we went to Sardinia I read about a cheese they make there which is seen as a delicacy. It's called Casu Marzu and it's actually illegal now, although you can still get it on the black market. It's a sheep's milk cheese infested with live maggots.  :o

I haven’t listened to Gong for years.

They are absolutely amazing Alan. The early stuff til about 73 especially and Iam deffo convinced that Daevid was a Yogi of some sort. Look at the Gong Yantra for example . His mission was to raise us all higher vibrationally and he got really pissed off when fellow band members got into ' drugs ' . If you get past the Pot Head Pixie stuff and Planet Gong you are listening to a very , very talented bunch of jazz and freestyle musicians , especially in the early years. Here is a great insight into Daevid. When the student protests and rights in Paris were happening he use to go around and squeeze wet sponges over Poilcemans heads ( wasnt into violence ) hence the song off Anglels Egg I think.

It does and parts feel ancient. It had a big fire there in 2012 I think which wrecked most of it but I reckon most has grown back as thats what nature does. Iam not sure where you are but its a direct ferry from Los Chriastanos in Tenerife which is easy to get to from almost anywhere . I was based in Valle Gran Rey and also lived on a beach called Playa Del Trigo for a few weeks with a few other like minded souls. Was totally secluded and a good 50 min walk to the nearest village. I'd deffo recommend Gomera . A lot of the non local people that live there are mainly old German or Dutch hippies and most of the people that pass through are youngish travellers just getting away for a bit or cant afford a flight to India or Thailand.

I never heard it but I know it was a part of the Gomerian culture I didn't really hear anyone speak about it until 2011/12 which was my second time there. Here's a good link on it and it's nice to see it's getting taught at their schools.

I've been going to Tenerife since 2008 and the two things that piss me off are I've never been up Teide and I've never been to Gomera. We always stay that side of Tenerife, so I see the island every day I'm there. Usually, by the time the holiday comes I've been solid for 7 months without any time off and am just so fucked all I want to do is nothing for the time we are there.

Love cheese but if there's one cheese that I'd pick to at on it's own it would be Manchego.

In a sandwich it has to be a really good cheddar.

And pasta or risotto has to have a bit of parmesan.

Give pecorino a try on a risotto or pasta, has a nuttier, slightly more acidic flavour to it whilst still being similar to Parmesan. There’s also some really good hard goats cheeses which can be grated onto pasta dishes, go particularly well with peas, asparagus, spring kind of flavours.

I love Parmesan but there’s loads of other cheeses which are great on those kinds of dishes

We shared a villa in Tuscany this summer and the local cheeses were mostly varieties of pecorino. Also had Scamorza affumicata - delicious.

I tend to like nice happy, creamy, tasty cheeses - nothing too smelly or minging.. So Red Leicester, Chedder (mild), Edam, Gouda

I quite like the smoked cheeses as well from time to time: The Tesco German smoked cheese is particularly flavoursome

Really don't like the cheeses that smell and taste like used socks, but hey - everyone has a different palette, so couldn't say anything against them other than I personally don't like them

Go mate. I totally get the cant be arsed bit but it'll be worth it. Ah . Fuck it. Just go and then make up your mind that you wish you was somewhere else. Ive never been up Teide myself . La Palma ( not Las Palma ) is pretty special too. It a proper energy spot that Isla and pretty full power with it. No planes allowed to fly over the Isla ( her ) as it's protected by .... by jolly I can't remember who by  :D . There's anothe little Isla too that I camped on for a bit called El Heirro . A lovely little Isla but not touristy in the slightest . When I was there the sea started bubbling and apparantly it was an underwater volcano saying hello  :D. I'd deffo say make the effort to go to Gomera next time if you can be arsed .

Cotherstone. If you have a spare tenner and guests coming round it's well, well worth ordering some online. Absolutely gorgeous.

Anyone recommend a good site to buy a selection of nice cheeses? Quick google and there's bloody loads of specialty sites. This thread has inspired me to get a whopping selection box in for Crimbo.  Fucking love cheese me.

Me too

Nothing better than sitting on the settee in front of a movie with a gigantic box of assorted crackers, cheese knife and a variety of cheeses.
