ON THIS DAY 11 SEPTEMBER 2004

Liverpool beat West Bromwich Albion 3-0 in their 2,000th league game thanks to goals from Steven Gerrard, Steve Finnan and Luis Garcia

What do you recall of this day?

Apart from it also being the anniversary of 9/11 over the pond, what were your thoughts of the team then?
Again in the history of the Club a time of change was happening.

So any auld arses in who would like to talk us through the 4-1 defeat at Preston on this day in 1937.

For reasons other than the football the game that stands out for me on this day was the Boavista game in 2001.  After the days events only 30,000 people turned up for a game with a subdued atmosphere that ended in a 0-0 draw.  Owen scoring for Liverpool. 

I should remember that 2004 game but it totally eludes me.

Didn't know that. But I honestly was that daft, I thought we'd batter everyone in the same manner after that. And if me memory serves me right, we got walloped next game. In fact, I think Leicester knocked us out the FA Cup. I can't be arsed checking, but I think that's right. Doesn't matter if it isn't, I'll just believe it anyway.

Those goals against West Brom were debut goals for both Garcia and Finnan.  As Rafa La said we were then, as now, at the start of a rebuilding process.  A rebuilding process that somehow saw us lifting the European cup only 8 months later!

That West Brom game was the first game most people saw just how amazing our young Spanish midfielder would be for us wasn't it?

Of course it's all about the football, but it's always been more than that to me. I can't even put it into words, but people who get it... that feeling, they know what I mean. I can actually time all the big events in me life by what LFC were doing. I get it all a bit mixed up from time to time. But I remember the highs and the lows... our first telly in the family, bought for The FA Cup final against Leeds, coming home from Heysel, what a horrible journey that was. So, LFC is sort of ingrained in me. I've turned me back on them a couple of times in the past, well, I've stopped going to games a couple of times. And I haven't been this season or last, but once it's in there's no stopping it. I'll get to a few games this season when I can, and I wouldn't swap me memories for anything. I had a belting time following the reds. I wouldn't change that.

That game in 2004 against WBA is probably best remembered for Steve Finnan's only goal for us and also Luis Garcia's 1st.

Despite the obvious ones, the game I remember most in Rafa's first season was getting knocked out the cup by Burnley. I knew Rafa was in trouble even then. The Press went for him like he was Fred West. It was disgraceful, but I honestly knew the writing was on the wall then. It's nice to have Kenny in. The bastards wouldn't dare set about him in that manner. And I'm not trying to take this off road. I'm thinking a trip to Wembley would be nice this season. I fancy us for the cup and a few more new memories. Last cup final I went to, I got on the train in Cardiff to come back to Bournemouth and woke up with a piss stain like Australia on me kecks in Plymouth. Wouldn't swap it for the world.

That West Brom game was the first one that myself, my lad and my old man attended together, in fact I think it's one of only two and it's unlikely to happen again as my old man isn't really up to it these days.
 What do I remember of the game? Finnan scoring a cracker late on at the Kop end and my lad insisting on buying a jester's hat outside the ground  well he was only 5!

He mentioned that in a match programme at some point during his tenure at Anfield. Said what impressed him was the way the team kept looking to score more goals. How ironic that he used to have kittens if we crossed the halfway line at 1-0 up!!

What do you recall of this day?

It was the first time I gave my missus the full match day routine. Being a Smoggy, she'd obviously never been to Anfield before. She'd taken such an interest in my first love since we met, watching us on TV etc, that I finally decided to take her. Same pubs as I normally go in, same chewy from the same shop etc etc.

I had a joint before I went in. When Finnan scored I thought it was Luis Garcia, my eyes were fucked. "It was Finnan who scored you stupid bastard" she told me. Whilst feeling a little silly, I was very proud of her.

The other thing I remember is her commenting on how ugly Ernshaw is (was his WBA debut I think).

I've took her to a few matches now and again the odd away match. Best memory of taking her was last away match at the Riverside, at the bar under the stand pre match, 100s of us doing the Torres bounce and ale flying everywhere.

Today's day in history might be hard to fathom in terms of fitness levels & the changes to the game. Are those players who ran out to play 12 Septemebr 1989 1989 much different from the present squad.

can remember being pissed off getting into my car that saturday

my saturday league team had just set up and we lost 4-2. seemed like we done the hard bit getting back in it from 2 down to 2-2.

everyone just blaming each other no one owning up to mistakes.

I was only 10 so was in bed for this one! I do remember it though, I had a little radio in my room and was playing with the knob (ahem) trying to get a station. I remember getting some obscure station where a voice calmly told me that Glen Hysen had scored to make it 8-0 to Liverpool. Thought I’d misheard at first!

8 different scorers that night, with only Nicol the full back scoring more than one. Impressive. Most vivid memory thinking back is Beardsley subbing himself off when we won the penalty so that Aldo could come on and take it. His farewell goal in front of the Kop. You wouldn’t be allowed to do that these days would you?

Personal memories - massive queues early doors outside the Kop right down the Kemlyn Rd, and the fear of a lockout (was there one that day? think there were a few that season). Also, Aldo (the Kopite scoring at the Kop end...what must THAT have felt like!) and the Kop singing, "We're gonna win the league, we're gonna win the league, and now you're gonna believe us....."

Bit cocky in early september? Nah...nailed on fact as far as we were concerned based on the football we were seeing.

That Oxford Utd game was my first match as the proud owner of a Kop season ticket, so know worries about lockouts for me [smug smilie]

Remember that game for the kop aswell, the previous 2 seasons we had battered them 6-0 and 4-0, so i was expecting a few goals. That season  think we only lost 2 games, we stayed unbeaten 'til the bitters beat us in the March, and i think it was Forest too later on, just a few weeks before the famous 5-0 win. What memories!

You're right. It was a free-kick. Here's an extract from a match-report :

"Barnes curled a left-foot shot past the diving Hucker in the 37th minute".

The extract doesn't confirm it was a free-kick but my memory does because I was there.

I have found another report :

"Beardsley’s free kick was played to Whelan for Barnes to blast left-footed past Peter Hucker".

So not directly from a free-kick like the one against Arsenal a couple of years later.

I'll always remember that game for my mate getting stitched up at half-time as much as for Barnsie's free-kick.
 We were in the Paddock for some reason that day and at H/T went to get a drink from the snackbar. It was fucking chaos and there was a lad in a wheelchair waiting to get served. My mate is one of those who'll talk to anyone or offer assistance if he thinks any is needed, so he asked the lad what he wanted and told him he'd get his when he got served himself. The lad in the wheelchair said no thanks, I'll wait to be served myself.
 But my mate wouldn't let it go and kept asking him what he wanted even though I could see the lad getting angrier and angrier! In the end he said "Oh alright then I want 2 sausage rolls and a tea".
 My mate finally gets to the counter and orders whatever we were having and gets the other lad his 2 sausage rolls and tea. Gives them to him and turns around to get his change, and by the time he turns back to get his money the lad has fucked off and is nowhere to be seen! I'll give him his due he was quick, I didn't see him go myself and I was more or less standing next to him. Must have cost my mate about 3 quid which in those days would buy you about 6 pints and a sausage dinner!
