the double '86.....
« on: July 7, 2008, 12:09:31 pm »
I was talking with a few mates in the pub about this the other night - that Chelsea away was amazing - there was some superb pics in the Echo and Daily Post of the celebrations.. What a moment that was - great goal by King Kenny and then the final against the bitters - people climbiing all over Wembley to get in... Then win... the open top bus.... Ian Rush pissed being interviewed on the telly in an awful knitted jumper on the bus!! I think that was my favourite season so far.... Great times... superb memories... Let's just hope we can re-live them asap... Anyone got any pics of that game at Stamford Bridge? (How shite was that ground at the time!)

83/84 was the best for me. It just got better and better. All the way to Barney Rubble's little hop in the Olympic Stadium.

Souey's last too. Lifting Big Ears - always the best way to go out.

Wasn't there, but always remember Beglin's flick, Kenny's chest and boss finish.

Everyone went mental in the cages. And there was a 23 on the scoreboard I think.

I was at the Chelsea game away, we had about 12,000 if I remember. Sang our hearts out, in what was traditionally the worst away end in top flight football, like standing in a field.
When it was all over we got escorted back through  London to Euston, felt like we truly were a red army.
No one could get near us, a week later we beat Everton. The marvellous Double.
2 seasons later Dalglish assembled the best team in LFC history...where did it all go wrong.
Pick your best players in the same formation and pass to a red shirt - 18 League titles.
Rotation, resting, zonal marking, dropping off, high tempo,  holding midfielders - ?

A certain manager had a rush of blood to his head and got rid of some of our outstanding players.
What I love about this, and several other of Kenny's press conferences, is that he manages to say something to the effect of  'Shut the fuck up, you fucking helmets and don't fuck with me or my football club or I'll make you eat your own balls', without actually using th

Never made the final but went to Chelsea.  Being spat at walking along the Kings Rd made the win all the more satisfying.

Of all the fucking brilliant games we have enjoyed over the years..that week of football won't ever be beaten in my time.
Fuck knows how many of us were in the bridge that afternoon, more than estimates no doubt.
The FA cup doesn't hold the value these days to what it once was..the win over Everton who were very good at the time too, the whole weekend that surrounded the game we spent in London, unbelievable.
If I was ever granted a wish for a weeks worth of football to revisit..that would be it.
Support the team,Trust & Believe.

The Final was a terrbile experience for me and me mates , after the game we had to spend all night in my mates uncles pub which was in the new covent garden which was shut during the weekend....it was so lonely..., just the 16 of us ..all we  to do was drink!...and we had to serve ourselves all night !!...oh! and watch a video of the final over and over again, play pool , ..with only a giant pot of scouse for food ...and we didn't get a wink of sleep all night... ..awful!

The pitfalls of being a Liverpool supporter back then. It was a cross we all had to bear.

Wasn't at the final or at Chelsea but was at the Leicester match away next to last game of the season. Everton were playing the same night away to Oxford who were fighting relegation. Everton were top & in the driving seat. A victory away to very poor opposition seemed a given. We scored two early goals at Filbert Street & effectively killed the game off well before half-time. Half time at Oxford & it was 0-0, loads of people had radios up against their ears following the match down there. Then with 10 minutes or so to go Oxford amazingly took the lead. There were jubilant shouts from some of our fans as the word spread like wildfire that we were now in the driving seat. "Oxford 1 Everton 0 Hallelujah" rang around the Liverpool end. Some of the Liverpool players looked at us & soon became aware of the significance of what was happening at The Manor Ground. They were giving each other clenched fists as if to say : ' C'mon, lets do this'. Our match was pretty boring as a spectacle but it's one that stands in the memory especially considering we weren't even in the race a few months earlier.

Back when winning multiple big competitions in a season actually meant something.  These days fans will sneer if you "only" win the league or the CL.

Was behind the goal in the Chelsea away to win the title.  Memories of that day;  on the footie special from lime street with plenty of ale flowing.  Getting spat on by nice Chelsea fans walking up the Kings road.  The explosion of noise in our end when Dalglish scored.  From that point onwards much nail biting as minutes seemed like hours.  Getting the return footie special back to lime street.  The crowd exiting the train at Lime street breaking into song ‘hand it over Everton’.

Or even if you only win the FA Cup. It's ridiculously underrated even on this site.
Kenny grabbing them both in his first season as manager was a dream at the time. Either would have done me to see Kenny get success.

Indeed.  It's why I value what Jurgen has given us.  I wish we could have a proper crack at the cups, but we can't afford to keep quality players young players hanging around when they're better off out on loan honing their skills, or maintain enough top dollar players to battle on so many fronts without fretting over burnout or injury.

That year gave us some magical memories, and Jurgen helped me reconnect with them.

God I was happy after the cup final win. I was devastated in 1977 and it seemed an eternity till we won it. Now those 9 years is roughly equivalent to a fortnight.

In the team photo at the top of Jason's post, can anyone tell me who is that between Brucie and Kevin McDonald? I dont recognise him at all.

Was my 1st season too. At least as a regular match goer. I would have been 6 at the start of the season. Mad to think I'd been in the Kop with my Dad the season before when I must have been 5 or 6!

I'll be honest I can't remember a lot about the start of this season but still remember the end. Distinct memories are not all of games we won. Everton beating us 2-0 at home sticks out. Probably because it felt like the league was gone. The QPR League Cup semi-final defeat sticks out too. After that it's mainly a couple of the wallopings we gave teams at home near the end of the season. Can remember the day of the Chelsea game but being 7 I didn't go. Chelsea wasn't the nicest away to go to and I think this was 1 season removed from my old man going to the infamous semi finals against United at Goodison and Maine Road. Think that probably put him off taking a 7 year old to a potentially volatile away.

FA Cup final is still pretty vivid in my mind. Remember getting picked up in the morning, stopping a Watford Gap services. Pub before the game and then being sat by a bluenose in the ground. Think I missed all the Liverpool goals due to my height but remember being amazed at being able to watch them on the concourse on a TV after the game.

That 1986 cup final is still probably my best memory of Wembley. Been a few times since and I don't think I've seen us win. Seen us win in The Millennium so I know I'm not an unlucky charm!
I think Jookie might just be the best fisherman on this thread.

Yeah, Everton winning the derby 2-0, felt like the title was done, us being 8 points behind the bitters at the time with 12 league matches left, big turning point came a few weeks later when Southall done his ligaments in in an international & was out for the season, the Ev's replacement keeper was decent enough but not in the same league that Southall was.

Everton lost at Luton in the run in[not sure if Luton had that plastic pitch then, i know they did the following season] which was crucial too, that was a week after a 1-1 home draw vs Chelsea, but Everton still had a game in hand, [which happened to be West Ham at home & West Ham too could have won the title too had we lost at Chelsea], which was played on the Monday after we played Chelsea.

Quite amusing Everton were runners up to us that season in league & FA cup. ;D

I think the double was an amazing achievement back then. I think the reason it seems less so now is that we were only the third team in the 20th century at the time to do it. Now it has been completed a lot more frequently in a short space of time while the FA Cup in many peoples eyes has reduced in importance.

But I’ll fuckin love it when we do it again this season 😉

I’d been taken twice the season before (my first games at Anfield) and we’d lost twice! Unheard of and my dad thought I was a jinx.

Took me to see us play Birmingham around Easter 86 and we win 5-0 with a Gary Gillespie hat trick and my stay of execution has been lifted ever since!

Quite amusing Everton were runners up to us that season in league & FA cup. ;D

The best part of Everton finishing runners up in both competitions is that was the year they were supposedly nailed on to win the European Cup. If it wasn't for Heysel.

According to the bitter quarter of the City they were the best team in Europe but managed to win nothing that season. Everton that.

The conga on the M1 when we ended up stuck in a traffic jam with the bitters on their way back from Oxford.

I was at the Manor Ground that night. I was meant to be at Filbert Street but had no chance of making kick off and decided I had to grit my teeth, walk up Headington Hill, and watch Oxford v Everton. It was an onslaught from the 1st minute to the 86th, or whenever it was Oxford improbably scored. How Everton didn't win that game I do not know. But the joy of being there to see them somehow lose, knowing from their transistors that the Reds were coasting it at Leicester.

Was behind the goal against Leicester.
Seemed like Whelan’s lob would never come down and he was celebrating whilst it was still going up.
The coach home was amazing. Some lad disconnected the tele from the video machine and stuck his finger in the aerial. Managed to pick up snowy  highlights until we hit Birmingham and went under a bridge (Spaghetti Jn) just as Whelan hit the winner and the picture went. It didn’t matter the bus went mad all over again.

I honestly think it was the two weeks at the end of that season that created the hatred in Blues.

They were cruising to the title with only Oxford and Southampton to play. They blew it and then celebrated like mad on the final day when they erroneously though Chelsea had took the lead against Liverpool. A couple of minutes of mad celebrations followed by silence when they found out it was Liverpool who had in fact taken the lead.

Then to top it off they took the lead in the Cup final only to get gubbed 3-1.

They saw their double turn in to our double. Everton that.
