There are no undertones, the press caused it and are now bending over backwards to get people to forget their part in his abuse.

I've said it before and I will say it again. I have the upmost respect for Sterling in the way he dealt with all that shit and the way he has handled the racist crap hes had thrown at him but I don't see how that has any bearing on PLAYER of the year. The title is what he should be judged on in this context and as numerous people have said he's not even top 5 for me. He's had a very good season but I'd argue Aguero, Mane, Salah, Virg and Bernado Silva have all been better/more important to their teams this year. Son would also be worth a shout too.

Don't think it should be done on appearances - that's just punishing players who have the exceptional talent to break-through earlier.

The cut-off age at the start of the season should just move from 23 to 21.
Why not Age 23 or like 150 apps(whichever is first) doesnt hurt the late bloom and would stop the earlier Bloomer from winning it with like 200 apps

Hmm ... i don't like the undertones from some that Sterling somehow got the player award because he is black and made a stand against racism. IMO that dubious hashtag used a few posts above doesn't send a good message out to anyone casually perusing this site. Sterlng's been fucking good this year and either him or Van Dijk are worthy winners. I'm not particularly fond of his attitude towards us at times - he's quite snide at times, but we give as good as we get and don't exactly lay out the red carpet to him when he comes to Anfield. So we can't really get on our high horse. He's earnt my respect this year for sure, both on and off the field. He said what needed to be said, and a lot of c*nts in the media and in society needed to fucking hear it.

Absolutely

And it’s not the worst reason for giving him the award. Giggs won POTY just cos he was good for a long time without ever being the best in a particular season. But let’s just be clear, he’s not even been close to the best player this season.
If he's being asked to head the ball too frequently - which isn't exactly his specialty - it could affect his ear and cause an infection. Especially if the ball hits him on the ear directly.

The press, which in the case of football press is generally a load of old white guys, created this monster. This monster being this hatred of Raheem Sterling through negative stories. They deliberately put a target on his back and then in the usual press fashion, they tried to hide away from their responsibility when that abuse turned racist they are doing all they can to blame everyone else.

He doesn’t deserve to be player of the year. He has been good, very good. But he hasn’t been the best footballer this year. He got the award because they want to be seen to be on the good side of it all and because of much internal shame.

Really, Sterling should tell them to fuck off.

Exactly the way I see it. Melissa Reddy made the point that a lot of people in the press that were backing Sterling for the Writer's POTY prize were going on about how he had evolved into such a mature young man yet Sterling has been pretty much the same person for many years. This is as you put it the football writers' attempt to whitewash their own past with respect to Sterling more than anything else. I doubt Sterling's role as an anti-racism advocate will get much coverage moving forward.
Quote from: Dion Fanning

The chants for Kenny Dalglish that were heard again on Wednesday do not necessarily mean that the fans see him as the saviour. This is not Newcastle, longing for the return of Kevin Keegan. Simply, Dalglish represents everything Hodgson is not and, in fairness, everything Hodgson could or would not hope to be.

British journos were so desperate they even gave the award to Scott Parker once, in a year where West Ham finished... last!

Among our players, both van Dijk and Mané have been better than Sterling this year. Salah as good. Agüero has in my opinion been their best player slightly ahead of Sterling and the Silvas. So it's just inherent home player bias as usual, nothing to see here. I'm amazed they've never voted for Sir Harold though  :o

Sterling is a twat. The whole PR offensive has done little to change that, other than have the journo's back peddle and act as if he's now Ingurland's messiah.

Really, Sterling should tell them to fuck off.

Wholeheartedly agree with this bit. but he won't, he's got the press off his own back and soon as they start to treat him (personally) better, while not changing anything else about themselves,  he's quite happy to be embraced by them. It's sickening really.

Raheem Sterling is now where he belongs, and is the recipient of another set of fans concerns, plaudits, scrutiny etc and I have absolutely no problem with this. He was an asset that the club turned into cash, just like Suarez, Coutinho and those little chunks of the original 'kop' we sold off before the all seater renovation.

Think he had a case to be a bit miffed in the first half when TAA nudged him in the back but he never really calmed down from there. Looked a bit silly in the end. In terms of performance it was by far his best game at Anfield since he moved, but that's not saying much.

Had a dreadful first half but completely turned it around in the 2nd. Successfully went past TAA multiple times which resulted in Klopp bringing on Joe Gomez to counter his threat.

Think the upturn in his form in the 2nd half coincided with the lack of booing he got. It was deafening in the 1st half and clearly affected him.
Mark my words. Top 8 will be a massive struggle.

Talented lad. Whining fucker. Glad he lets the Anfield crowd get inside his head - despite being their best player during the second half he was still obviously annoyed/disturbed.

Laughed at him trying to pick a fight with Joe.

He was so wound up it was hilarious viewing.

They might as well bench him for future games at Anfield, he always plays gash and misses a sitter like he usually does in this fixture.

Good movement and pace.
City’s number 10s lay it on a plate for him and he puts the ball in the net.
His game has developed but for me he thrives from the set up, isn’t the vital cog.

He was by far City’s best player today. Anfield got into his head, but he still managed to find dangerous positions. He is a real threat and a proper footballer. The only one who cared for the away side today.
What do Fernando Hierro, Carles Puyol, Philipp Lahm, Andres Iniesta, Iker Casillas, Sergio Ramos and Jordan Henderson share in common?

Your 6,666 post, bit of a deal with the devil going on there?  ;)

I thought he was their best player yesterday, he was really dangerous and cut through us time after time. He might get the ball put on a plate for him a lot, he did here with Suarez, but you need to get into those positions and he does it on a regular basis. You couldn't rely on him to do it without the service though, he's not really a make a goal out of nothing player. Fucking moaning tart though.

His movement is superb, part of the reason why he scores so many. Great dribbler, excellent technique, hard working. He was their best player yesterday, and we couldn't contain him for a large spell after Henderson went off. Nearly created a goal right after they scored their first too.
