Downing was total gash and that's because he has limited ability. Never man of the match but Southgate was one of the selectors so he was bound to try and bum him for that one.

Young was disappointing too. The commentary and what I was seeing with my eye's didn't match. He skyed his long rang shots and generally swaggered about. His free kicks are usually his strength but he was wasteful.

I was impressed with Cahill and could see him fitting well alongside Danny and even Skirts.

I hope Gyan performs the same trick against Barry, Lescott and Heart on Sunday.

Thought Young did ok myself.

Forced a very good save from the keeper, hit the bar where 9 times out of 10 it hits the back of the net. Tried a few through balls that were almost perfect and only didnt come off due to a good interception or not quite enough weight on the ball. Tracked back a fair bit and put in a shift too.

Wasn't his finest performance and he certainly skied a shot or two as well as his freekick going astray as you said but over the 2 games he was comfortably England's best player. He'd bring a lot to our squad.

Barca have bought him recently, no? No chance of signing him, too late :(

No mate, it's been reported a bunch that Barca are willing to let him go if the price is right which really would be affordable for us.

Don't think we need HG player urgently at all.

Next year:
1. Gerrard
2. Carragher

3. Johnson
4. Kelly
5. Carroll
6. Spearing
7. Gulacsi?

Assuming we sell Jones and Cole as far as I am aware we'll only need one more player to fill the quota (Adam isn't HG either) which will allow a full 25 man squad. Granted Carra & Gerrard can't have too much longer but long term we have Ayala, Pacheco, Shelvey & Wilson coming through plus all our U18 talent.

Regardless I don't think we need more than a 20 man squad anyway which requires only three HG players.

If the best man for the job is Young, Javis, Dann or Cahill then by all means go for them but to do it for the HG rule makes absolutely no sense.

Not sure whether this is the right place to post this but I would take Elmander in the summer.

We need a back up forward. He can play either up top or in the wide-forward positions. Knows the Premier League inside out now. Free transfer (as contract expires in the summer). Would be good back-up for Suarez/Carroll.

Re: You have to take your hat off to Arsene Wenger...
The only way id take my hat off to him, is if i was odd job, then id throw it at the c*nt!

Our lack of home grown players was part of the reason we ended up with Jones, Cole and Konchesky in the summer. Also why we brought in Wilson and Shelvey who will qualify as Liverpool produced players after 3 years. As those first three have been varying levels of disaster, it makes sense to replace them with other home grown players who are actually worthy of the Liverpool shirt.
The youth players are not ready yet, and if one of them gets a chance and shines, they don't have to be registered anyway.
So I think it is obvious we will get several proven, yet young and with potential to improve, homegrown players in the summer. Hopefully this is topped off with a 'holy shit we got him' Suarez type top foreign talent to give us some extra magic.

Not sure if Wilson will count as homegrown. You have to have spent 36 months at an English/Welsh club before the age of 21, or before the end of the season in which you turn 21, to be counted as homegrown. He will turn 21 in December of his third year and he signed on the 21st of July, which i'd assume is after the date the season officially finishes. I guess it will come down to a technicality whether he counts or not.

Now the homegrown rule, where you can have a limit of 17 non-homegrown players and a maximum of 25 players over the age of 21 (players younger than 21 on 1st Jan that year not needing to be included). Our squad from the start of the season...

Non-Homegrown
1. Meireles
2. Agger
3. Aurelio
4. Torres
5. Jovanovic
6. Kyrgiakos
7. Maxi
8. Kuyt
9. Babel
10. Lucas
11. Reina
12. Poulsen
13. Skrtel
14.
15.
16.
17.
Homegrown
1. Jones
2. Johnson
3. Konchesky
4. Gerrard
5. Cole
6. Carragher
7. Spearing
8.

In January we obviously lost two non-homegrown players in Torres and Babel and signed Suarez and the homegrown Carroll. So we freed up one non-homegrown place and added a homegrown player - not including players we've loaned out, that is. Next season we'll have to take into account David N'Gog who no longer is under the age cut-off and becomes an extra non-homegrown player. Despite turning 21 next month, Martin Kelly won't need to be in next seasons squad because he was 20 as of the 1st of Jan this year, which is the date used as the cut-off by UEFA. Peter Gulacsi is also in the same boat. And of course we have El Zhar, Aquilani, Degen, Darby and Insua to come back from their loans, the first three being non-homegrown and the latter homegrown. So...

Non-Homegrown
1. Meireles
2. Agger
3. Aurelio
4. Suarez
5. Jovanovic
6. Kyrgiakos
7. Maxi
8. Kuyt
9. Lucas
10. Reina
11. Poulsen
12. Skrtel
13. N'Gog
14. El Zhar
15. Aquilani
16. Degen
17.
Homegrown
1. Jones
2. Johnson
3. Konchesky
4. Gerrard
5. Cole
6. Carragher
7. Spearing
8. Carroll
9. Darby
10. Insua

So i think if we include everyone on the clubs books right now who would need to be registered to play next season, we'd be one player over in total (26/25) and one player under the non-homegrown limit (16/17). But of course plenty of those won't be playing here next season.

As i see it, there isn't a great need for us to buy home-grown; the biggest motivation rather than out of necessity would be to sign the top homegrown talents because they're available, as availability is the main issue when procuring the best homegrown players. Even if we let Konchesky, Cole, Darby and Insua go and signed Cahill, Young and Jarvis (note that Adam isn't homegrown), one of those would only end up taking one of the 17 non-homegrown places anyway. There is no quota of homegrown players per se, it only limits your overall squad size; so if you were only needing to register 22 players, you'd only need 5 homegrown players instead of 8. We only actually have 18 players who are registered at the moment would you believe. So i'm not sure how great an issue the homegrown rules are for us yet.

Assume we manage to lose some of the so-called "deadwood", the likes of Jovanovic, Kyrgiakos, Poulsen, El Zhar, Degen, Konchesky, Darby, plus Aquilani and Insua...

Non-Homegrown
1. Meireles
2. Agger
3. Aurelio
4. Suarez
5. Maxi
6. Kuyt
7. Lucas
8. Reina
9. Skrtel
10. N'Gog
11.
12.
13.
14.
15.
16.
17.
Homegrown
1. Jones
2. Johnson
3. Gerrard
4. Cole
5. Carragher
6. Spearing
7. Carroll
8.
Notable Under-21's
-. Gulacsi
-. Ayala
-. Wilson
-. Kelly
-. Shelvey
-. Pacheco

There would still be room to sign up to 7 new non-homegrown players and up to 8 new players in total, which is plenty, nevermind players we sign who might be under 21 and not need to be registered. It should also be remembered that the season after next Gulacsi, Ayala and Kelly will need to be registered if they're still here and will each count as homegrown.

The only homegrown player i hope we sign is Cahill. I'm not particularly fussed about some of the others.

Was it two or three assists by Dzsudzsak today?

Three assists against Holland? No more reasons not to sign him. And I'm afraid Juventus will get on our way - all news I see about Dzsudzsak, is that Juve is in talks with him...

I believe he did set up all 3 of Hungary's goals. I didn't see him play but I was told he was quiet most of the game. But still 3 assists while having a quiet game isn't bad at all.

Can you imagine us having a winger that score goals and assists a lot?

 :P

We sure need one like him... would make our game so much better upfront. With Suarez would be lethal.

Really like the sound of M'Vila, never seen or even heard of him putting in a poor performance and he seems a lot like a younger Mascherano. Would give Lucas a hell of a fight for the holding midfield postion and there are times when both Lucas and M'Vila together could be useful.

I think we're in for a great summer as far as transfers go but I think the hard one for us will be leftback. Beyond Coentrao there just doesn't seem to be a whole lot of quality options out there available to us and there's a hell of a lot of competition for Coentrao.

I'm not sure how reliable that website is. With the Contrao thing though I'm not sure whether we would spend 20 million on a left back although we did spend 18 million on Johnson.

Too be fair, those reports stating he is going to Juventus, and Coentrao is going to Bayern have to be taken with a vast pinch of salt; as do all reports on transfers. There's still a strong possibility of him coming to us, so you can continue having wet dreams about Dzsudzsack wearing a red shirt  ;D

Like I've been saying for the last 3 months: Afellay would be an amazing signing, and no more than 10mil either. He was apparently very good tonight. And Dzsudzsak got 3 assists, I don't care how little he touched the ball - 3 assists are 3 assists...Against the WC finalists. Didn't see the game, but saw the goals, Dzsudzsak's third assist was brilliant, but Afellay's first assist to Kuyt was brilliant as well.

And Dirk's second goal was just absurd.

Could be spicy!

He's a Director of Football not head scout. His job is more than identifying foreign players to buy.

The rules state we need at least 8 english qualified players in our squad of 25. So we need to look at home as well as abroad especially as it'll take a few years before we produce our 8 english players from the academy.

No they don't. That statement is wrong on at least 2 counts.

Seeing as you seem to know a lot about French football and M'Vila, what do you think of Blaise Matuidi?

I'm curious what the 'native' view is on him.
I'm really hoping Sturridge busts out the wacky dip when he scores.

The chants for Kenny Dalglish that were heard again on Wednesday do not necessarily mean that the fans see him as the saviour. This is not Newcastle, longing for the return of Kevin Keegan. Simply, Dalglish represents everything Hodgson is not and, in fairness, everything Hodgson could or would not hope to be.
