£140 for a 4 ball at Formby now, that's really good value.

Usually a day ticket at Formby as well, all you can get in in the day.....superb golf course.

Got a set of Titleist 710's custom ordered from a mate in Canada, as Titleist UK wont do a custom set where you have half cavity's and half blades!

gorgeous clubs and they feel great!

Why would you order such a set?

because over the past five years i have played the combo sets that titleist have released, the 735's and the zb's. Like having the set up of a nice cavity in the long irons, and a blade on the short irons.

My old ZB's are currently on ebay if anyones interested?!

right golfers, im a 18 handicapper who cant spin the ball at all. i have bought two spin milled vokeys 52 degree and 56 degree and use a soft spinning ball. what am i dooing wrong?

example: i have an allright smooth swing, i use my 52 degree between 90 yards out and 120. i get a nice height with the shot but it just does not spin!

Im a 6 handicap, and to be honest, i dont generate alot of spin, i get loads on these soft greens, but during the summer i dont get much on the firmer greens. I do enough to control the ball on the green, but im not one for sending it past the pin and spinning it back. With my chipping around the green, i can nearly make the ball stop dead if i needed it too!!

its all about rythm, but with a fast club head speed through imapct.

would a high spinning shot have the same ball flight as say a normal wedge shot? if that makes sense?

Me neither, I'm off 8 on a difficult course.

Most amateurs don't, unless they're around scratch.  To generate spin you need to hit ball then turf (and turf around 6" after the ball), amateurs don't shift their weight onto their forward leg quick enough, nor aggressively enough, and lose their clubhead lag way too early to be able to do this.

Woodhall Spa

What can i say about The Hotchkin course?  Considering it was closed on Friday due to snow, i've never seen a course in such great condition!  Not one poor hole on the course & definatley one of my favourite courses i've ever played - even if my driver & 4 wood let me down all day :-)

Less than £50, this course is unbelievable value.  If you haven't already played it, make sure it's on your list!

Try putting the ball further back in your stance?

Edit: I'm amazed they won't spin at this time of year - your course must be a hell of a lot dryer than mine - hybrid clubs are plugging in the green, it's so soft.

its about swinging down on the ball, and creating some spin between the club and the turf....
back in your stance as dnkw will aid that swing..

I'm gonna get better this year; am gonna stop trying to twat it all the time, I'm gonna start being more relaxed, i'm gonna learn how to get out of a bunker without loosing me rag and I'm gonna stop bunking on courses(Oh the shame of it).

All in all I'll be turning over a new leaf this year...and will probably find my ball underneath it. :)

If you can hit the ball clean, just allow yourself to attack the ball. It will take some time to get it right but eventually you'll be able to control the ball just as you want it. Try different positioning of the ball, stance and swing. And then you just have to be confident in your ability when you want to make the shot..  Which is the hardest part ;-)

when i have poor driving days, i just set up, think only about swinging softly and pulling the club back low, making sure i shift my weight onto my right foot, then onto the left for the follow through

I've suggested it elsewhere in the thread.
You can correct things on the driving range, but I prefer going up to Arrowe park football pitches in the week, when they're deserted. Bag of balls a few mid irons and a wedge, and away you go.

i do the same over here, have a few back to back pitches beside me... working shifts and having midweek mornings help..  it tends to be an 8iron and about 10 balls

Played for the first time for probably about 2 months today. Hcap of 16, shot 93 (par 72) so wasn't too bad all things considered (weather was shite, freezing etc). Woods and putting were awful, missed at least 5 easyish putts.

Hoping to get cut a lot this year - got cut from 18 to 15.7 (regularly shooting 14-16 over) in the beginning/middle of last year, then just hit a block and couldn't break 90.

I think I'm at the stage where all the parts of my game are there, it's just combining them together thats the issue.

After living in Ecuador for 5 years, I am finally off to play my first round of golf down here. Should be a lot of fun, as here in Quito we are up at 2800 meters, so the thin air will mean I will be hitting some record drives!  ;D

All of the courses in the country used to be private, and membership is far too expensive for me. But the socialist President just opened up one of the courses, which was a private club exclusive only to high ranking members of the military, to the public. The course looks a bit shite, and it´s next to an air force base, so there will probably be planes and choppers buzzing by, but I´m looking forward to playing up here in the thin air. Unfortunately my clubs are back in Canada, so I´m really hoping that they have some decent rentals that are close to my size (I´m much taller than the average Ecuadorian). I was looking forward to unloading my R9 up at altitude, hopefully some family or friends will come down and visit so they can bring me my clubs!

Bear in mind he's talking about spinning his wedges here, which are swung on a much more vertical plane - shifting the ball back a little isn't going to cause him to hook, certainly not to the extent you're describing. It'll also increase the chances of impacting the ball with the hands ahead of the clubhead.

Even if you disagree with me, worth a try, surely?

This thread used to be about how bad you were now we have got itsgunnabebarnes playing off 18 wanting to give a ball loads of munch and spin the ball back yards, barnesy the best way to get your handicap down is lay down those munching wedges get your putter out and practice hour after hour at the putting, i will give you a test, next time you play a round of golf mark down how many putts after each hole, get in the bar after, sit down and count them up you will be staggered at the percentage of putts you have just hit, it could be as much as 50% of the shots you have just played will be on the greens, forget the prima donna wedge shots and get the putting sorted you will half you handicap in 6 months if you get your putts down to 35ish a round

I've given the proper solution to his technical question, you've given the "band aid" solution.  If you want to properly develop your game, you've got to do it the right way, so the answer is no.

Moving the ball further back with wedges will result in losing distance, and risk "chunks".

Very true, but good wedge play helps you reduce your putts as well.  So work on putting, and your short game around the green and you'll take strokes off your handicap in a hurry.

On average, a scratch player has 28 putts a round, a 9 handicapper has 32 putts and an 18 handicapper has 36 putts.

Got the stats from Golf Digest, they did an article on it a few years ago.

I'm off 8 currently, have been as low as 6, but not putting any practise time in anymore.  I'm a member at Brocket Hall, 2 courses, both quite difficult, with treacherous greens.  I play 3 better, on average, at most of my buddies courses.

There was a really good article on putting a few issues ago in Golf Digest.  It talked about a measuring system for putting that I thought was really useful.  You take the footage of the putt that goes in the hole,  count it as 2 if less than 2 feet, and subtract 4 feet for every 3 putt.  So if you hole 74 feet of putts, and have 3 - 3putts, your total is 62.

0  Handicap = 70 feet of putts
5  Handicap = 62 ft
10Handicap = 57 ft
15Handicap = 51 ft
20Handicap = 48 ft
25Handicap = 40 ft

I tracked this for 50 rounds, and it's a decent reflection of your putting ability overall, and on the day.

Excellent i will try that out, i play off 6 and have always considered myself to have a good short game i am not long off the tee so having a good short game is a must, up until last year i never carried a special wedge i always got on with a 9 iron, i play at Tewkesbury Park which isnt heavily bunkered so you can usually bump and run rather than having to go aerial, i have since got a 52 degree wedge which i do like using and have changed my way of thinking but have noticed i dont get up and down as well as i used to, i might have to back to my old ways, i do go to Scotland every year and play the Eden tournament at St Andrews, i have always found the lies too tight to use wedges up there and always go back to using various bump and run methods, i love that type of golf seeing the shot and playing it much better than chucking it up in the air
i can tip em but cant back em
