Quote
Play-time is over, children: Putin's message to the Western elites is most important since Churchill's 'Iron Curtain' speech

Most people in the English-speaking parts of the world missed Putin's speech at the Valdai conference in Sochi a few days ago, and, chances are, those of you who have heard of the speech didn't get a chance to read it, and missed its importance. (For your convenience, I am pasting in the full transcript of his speech below.) Western media did their best to ignore it or to twist its meaning. Regardless of what you think or don't think of Putin (like the sun and the moon, he does not exist for you to cultivate an opinion) this is probably the most important political speech since Churchill's "Iron Curtain" speech of March 5, 1946.

In this speech, Putin abruptly changed the rules of the game. Previously, the game of international politics was played as follows: politicians made public pronouncements, for the sake of maintaining a pleasant fiction of national sovereignty, but they were strictly for show and had nothing to do with the substance of international politics; in the meantime, they engaged in secret back-room negotiations, in which the actual deals were hammered out. Previously, Putin tried to play this game, expecting only that Russia be treated as an equal. But these hopes have been dashed, and at this conference he declared the game to be over, explicitly violating Western taboo by speaking directly to the people over the heads of elite clans and political leaders.

The Russian blogger chipstone summarized the most salient points from Putin speech as follows:

1. Russia will no longer play games and engage in back-room negotiations over trifles. But Russia is prepared for serious conversations and agreements, if these are conducive to collective security, are based on fairness and take into account the interests of each side.

2. All systems of global collective security now lie in ruins. There are no longer any international security guarantees at all. And the entity that destroyed them has a name: The United States of America.

3. The builders of the New World Order have failed, having built a sand castle. Whether or not a new world order of any sort is to be built is not just Russia's decision, but it is a decision that will not be made without Russia.

4. Russia favors a conservative approach to introducing innovations into the social order, but is not opposed to investigating and discussing such innovations, to see if introducing any of them might be justified.

5. Russia has no intention of going fishing in the murky waters created by America's ever-expanding "empire of chaos," and has no interest in building a new empire of her own (this is unnecessary; Russia's challenges lie in developing her already vast territory). Neither is Russia willing to act as a savior of the world, as she had in the past.

6. Russia will not attempt to reformat the world in her own image, but neither will she allow anyone to reformat her in their image. Russia will not close herself off from the world, but anyone who tries to close her off from the world will be sure to reap a whirlwind.

7. Russia does not wish for the chaos to spread, does not want war, and has no intention of starting one. However, today Russia sees the outbreak of global war as almost inevitable, is prepared for it, and is continuing to prepare for it. Russia does not war - nor does she fear it.

8. Russia does not intend to take an active role in thwarting those who are still attempting to construct their New World Order - until their efforts start to impinge on Russia's key interests. Russia would prefer to stand by and watch them give themselves as many lumps as their poor heads can take. But those who manage to drag Russia into this process, through disregard for her interests, will be taught the true meaning of pain.

9. In her external, and, even more so, internal politics, Russia's power will rely not on the elites and their back-room dealing, but on the will of the people.

To these nine points I would like to add a tenth:

10. There is still a chance to construct a new world order that will avoid a world war. This new world order must of necessity include the United States - but can only do so on the same terms as everyone else: subject to international law and international agreements; refraining from all unilateral action; in full respect of the sovereignty of other nations.

To sum it all up: play-time is over. Children, put away your toys. Now is the time for the adults to make decisions. Russia is ready for this; is the world?

Massive speech, strange that the western media haven't really reported this. Would of thought what he had to say would have been to the interest to many

Anyhow here are some other links for validity.

It's very interesting Russia.  They are lucky to have so many oil and gas reserves, as their society seems to restrict their own ambitions so much.

It was ever thus I suppose.

Russia can't win a world war, and Putin knows it.

No-one can win a world war in the age of nuclear weapons.

Russia can't win an economic war, and Putin knows it. However, he also knows that the Russian people can put up with unbelievable hardships when they think their motherland is under threat. His regime has consistently failed to invest the bounty from Russia's immense mineral wealth into infrastructure and a diversified economy. His thinking has always been about Russian influence and power - political and military, not economic, as he is a product of Soviet philosophy. It is natural then, that his responses are 'Cold War' rhetoric and bluster.

"East Asia has always been at war with Eurasia".

To paraphrase Sting, we must hope that "the Russians love their children consumer toys too.." for change to come.

To be fair if you look at that speech in isolation what's he actually said that's wrong? Hasn't he basically just said he wants Russia to develop it's own identity free from outside influence?

Putin flexing his muscles a bit.

Does anyone else not find it really strange how little has been mentioned of this speech? It was hard to find any credible links and took me a while to find them through google. Surely something like this is more than newsworthy, Russia is the biggest and one of the most powerful countries in the world.

To me it seem's like Putin is not happy with how little a share of money Russia get from the powers that be, which he seems to imply are more than governments (he mentions the elite / new world order). He seem's to mention a few times he doesn't mind the world being ran in this manner ( mentions back room negotiations / the elites back room dealing) but Russia should have more say and if not he's going to start doing something about it. Not sure if that means war or exposing certain things. Most of it seem's to be aimed at the Americans who he see's central to what he call's their empire of chaos. I'm not sure how much of this has to do with the Ukraine situation and how much is down to other factors like economics and how Russia is being portrayed by the west.

I don't think much will come from this but it seem's like a very open, straight, eye opening speech. Something you will never get from any of the other leading countries presidents etc.

The only chilling line is Russia see's global war as almost inevitable, something you don't want to be hearing from a man who holds such power.

Fruitflies might survive the radiation but then they'd just starve to death.

And naturally I meant a conventional world war; a nuclear war has only losers.

In conventional terms, China would stay neutral - although might eye up some of Russia's natural resources.  They wouldn't stand a chance against our combined navies and I doubt they could achieve air superiority over Europe, or conduct successful attacks on multiple fronts in multiple countries.  Too many former East Bloc nations hate their guts and would be only too happy to give them what for on a conventional battlefield.

He is unbelievable and that's why his speech hasn't had any attention from outside Russia. I just wish the other world leaders would get the same kind of treatment from time to time for doing the exact same thing.

What about the Ukraine not being invaded?

The Ukraine is a far, far more complicated story than that.
'Despite their  cup pedigree - since they've returned to the top flight in 1962 - Everton have, after today's results, once again gone further in the FA Cup than their much vaunted neighbours. For the record it's Everton 23 Liverpool 22  and 7 ties in 52 seasons'

How can you take Putin seriously when he does the exact opposite of what he preaches?

He is unbelievable and that's why his speech hasn't had any attention from outside Russia. I just wish the other world leaders would get the same kind of treatment from time to time for doing the exact same thing.

That's nonsense mate to be honest. All politicians talk shit most of the time, this speech seems a lot more honest and even if it isn't surely a president saying world war 3 is inevitable, Russia are ready for war and exposing back table talks by western elites is the slightest bit newsworthy.

I hope Putin continue's to stick it to other world leaders, it's refreshing to see some honesty in politic's. Who know's this could lead to a turning point in the corrupt, capitalist way the world is being run. Hopefully to do so he doesn't feel the need to resort to war though however.

I don't really like political threads as I feel people try force their opinions on others (which never works by the way) but I did feel this was worth posting, not alone because of how threatening the speech was to our everyday lives but because for one reason or another it wasn't reported by western news source's which to me say's a lot on the bias delivered through our popular news sources.

How people can trust our news sources, governments, banking systems etc is beyond me.

Me too, a lot of people don't trust them regarding domestic policies but seem to have faith and trust in their foreign ones.................go figure.

Opinions differ greatly. You see Putin as honest and sticking it up to the others.

I see him as straight up liar, who's convinced himself he is a God and that's why I never take his speeches seriously. I would admire Putin if he "stuck it to others" if it was for something good like improving human rights (something which his own country seems to lack) or helping the environment, but I see him as a bully who is purposely trying to be a pain in the arse because he likes getting under the skin of others just to be different.

Jesus, things are bad if you're looking at Putin as some kind of truth teller, sticking it to the elites and standing up for the common man.

So you're essentially saying that he's a politician?
