Congratulations to the Fall on being  'Festive 50' number one this year (as continued by Dandelion Radio). Their third number one apparantly.

Been whistling the tune to Edinburgh Man for a few days. Such a pretty tune - their prettiest? Washes over me.

<a href="http://www.youtube.com/v/P-Tw4g0CQbU&amp;hl=en&amp;fs=1" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer" class="bbc_link bbc_flash_disabled new_win">http://www.youtube.com/v/P-Tw4g0CQbU&amp;hl=en&amp;fs=1</a>

It's springtime but I still miss the streets at dawn
And in the morning walking your bridges home
As I sit and stare at all of England's souls
I tell you something
I wish I was in Edinburgh

I don't mind being by myself
Don't wanta be anywhere else
Just wanna be in Edinburgh
I wish I was an Edinburgh man

You can leave me on the shelf
I'm an Edinburgh man myself
I will always give you help

It's summertime but I still miss your skies so clear
Sitting and staring on a beach somewhere
I'll tell you something
I wish I was in Edinburgh

Don't give a toss about private wealth
And history just repeats itself
Keep me away from the Festival
And just give me a warm quarter-gill

They say you project yourself
But I'm an Edinburgh man myself

It's wintertime and i still see the cobble stones
Clacking over your streets at dawn
I was really poor since I left Edinburgh

I'm OK just by myself
Cause our miserable king won't protect us from ourselves
How I wish I was in Edinburgh
How I wish I was in Edinburgh

I was always in good health
I'm an Edinburgh man myself
I will always give you help
I'm an Edinburgh man myself

I'd never read the lyrics to that before - that must be the most straight forward love song that MES has ever written.

Such sad news about Lux Interior today... The Fall supported The Cramps on their first UK tour in 1980? Smith had alot of time for The Cramps, sharing similar music tastes, and both covered what was to become a classic Fall track.

Many a happy Fall moment, saw Sonic Youth  in I think 88/89 at the RC and the band paused then White Lightning flashed through the speakers for 10 seconds.

Brixton Fridge in 92 was fucking amazing as was walking out of a pub in Soho after England were knocked out of Euro96 straight into Astoria....they fucking tore the place up. He spent the entire gig at the back of the stage so know one could see him, all you  him moaning the shit out of the drummer

i dont know feck all about the fall. except, i remember a video of some nutter driving around in a jeep uttering something incomprehensible
about freerange eggs ....or something.

But it was so catchy, only heard it the once, and it had me.
anyhow i bought the vinyl single back in the day and i went rooting
for it the other night and stuck iit on. it was still great.

then women, wifes and kids took me and music was finished and i never got to explore what other offerings they had. then i saw this thread. :D

anyone recommend anything else that sounds like freerange?

A few years ago, I purchased a copy of The Fall's seminal greatest hits album 458489 A Sides in a used CD bin for $4. One of the best purchases I've ever made, every track is fantastic and a great introduction to their 80's work.

Also one of the funniest things, I've ever seen. Mark E. Smith reading the football results for the BBC. Tottenham Hotspur postponed, West Ham 1H :lmao

Get on this:

http://burningworld.blogspot.com/2009/03/fall-demos-rarities-1981-2002.html

"This is an interesting bootleg. I don't think I've seen a collection of Fall demo's before so this is a bit of a find. Quality wise it's actually pretty damn good and features some interesting early versions of tracks we know and love. The version of C.R.E.E.P is particularly strange in that it sounds like the sort of re-make you might hear coming over the system in your local supermarket (if you had a supermarket which played The Fall). There are a few things which I've not heard before such as the particularly good "Hey! Mark Riley" which as far as I know has not been released before but I'm sure some clever bugger will soon tell me that it was the b side of the thing which I missed and everybody has it (usually the way it goes). I don't think I've ever heard the Drum Club remixes of "Middle Class Revolt" before either so this compilation is a real treat. Enjoy..."

Fall Sign To Domino, Says Mark E Smith
The Quietus, April 3rd, 2009 15:00
Mark E Smith confirms rumours. No Von Sudenfed, though...

Yesterday lunchtime, a Quietus representative had the pleasure of sitting down and having a few pints with Mark E Smith in a Hampstead boozer for an interview on behalf of a forthcoming Tate project on the interaction between music and art.

While in the company of Smith, his wheelchair and pot of snuff (he's thinking of opening a shop, apparently) we asked whether the rumours that The Fall's next album would be coming out on Domino Records were true, to which he replied in the affirmative.

The as yet untitled album will be coming out in June, says Smith, who sounds as upbeat as ever about the new record. Apparently an album and a half of material is already recorded, and Smith will be in the studio with the band this coming Monday. No rest for the wicked. Asked if there was to be another album from Von Sudenfed, his collaboration with Mouse On Mars, though, Smith replied in the negative.

Domino have yet to issue a statement, though they have confirmed to The Quietus that they will indeed be releasing the new Fall record.

So there you have it. Now, The Quietus celebrates The Fall returning to a big indie with a special Fall covers Spotify playlist. In the meantime, click the image below to have a look at our gallery of images from Wednesday night's Fall gig at KOKO, London, where Mark E Smith performed from a wheelchair. Pics courtesy Shot2bits.net

Other films in production for the Tate’s series include, among others, Billy Childish, Lydia Lunch and Jeffrey Lewis. The series is set for release in September on Tate Shots, directed by Nicola Probert. Keep your eyes on The Quietus for more information and reports on the series.

Cheers for that RiK... excellent blog that. Sucked in the HMHB show too. Bit miffed that he's up and about again - have always wanted to see him live on stage in a wheelchair... inching his way from the guitarist to fiddle with the knobs on the keyboard. On wheels!

New tracks are sounding OK without making me yelp with gratuitous initial pleasure but as ever, the mold I'm sure will grow.

God that pic of Smith in his wheels is good. Has me in bloody tears.
