Quick question Peeps - can somebody tell me why Cameron directed the 2nd movie instead of Scott?  Was the first one not a hit at the time?  Was it a studio decision?

Or did Scott not want to get involved with it due to the script / etc....?

The idea of doing a sequel was all Cameron's - he was writing a script for it even before he'd finished filming The Terminator. Fox wanted to see how that did before giving Cameron the green light to do Aliens. Scott was apparently never approached, but he was of course persuing his own things after the theatrical release of Blade Runner was butchered by the studio - he was branching out into fantasy (Legend) and other genres, doubt he'd have been interested at the time anyway.

wouldn't have guessed going by your first line! personal preference though. they're both fantastic, if there was a poll on which is better i reckon they'd come out dead level just about.
Oh they're both great films but Alien is a cerebral piece of cinematic greatness whereas Aliens is pure meatheaded entertainment. Alien is clearly the connoisseur's choice.

As for polls I'm sure you're right but going by what's popular these days (Voting Conservative/X Factor/Twilight Saga/Adele/Avatar/iPhones/Downtown Abbey/Sarah Millican etc etc) I'd take any result with a Texas sized pinch of salt.

Alien is much better than Aliens.

How close with Prometheus get to quality of Alien........... Some seem to think it will be way off but I hope not.

You've got to wonder if the ship that crash lands (And is seen in Alien) is going to be analogue to Pandora (And her box of gifts) as in the legend the response to Prometeus stealing the fire was Pandora being created by all the Gods out of clay and sent to mankind where she releases all of mankinds ills onto the Earth (And interestingly she keeps Hope in the box)

Also Prometheus wasn't human - he was a Titan.

I kind of agree, I loved James Cameron's film. If Alien was a ghost story, Aliens was a war film in the same universe. Immense both.
Aliens is one of the great sequels imo.
Was going to write something similar to that. Exactly how both should be looked at, and Aliens should never be scoffed at because the director is James Cameron.

Anybody bought this months Empire?

There's a big feature on Prometheus, really interesting. The standout line however has to be this one:

"The excitement is palpable on set, with actors and crew members united in their sense that this is something special, a comeback that's up there with Elvis '68 and Istanbul '05"

I'm sold  :D

It says everything to me that in a year that also sees the release of films like The Hobbit, Avengers and the next Batman that this film is still by far and away the one i can't wait to see more than any other.

Always hoped we'd get a glimpse of what went on before Alien but never imagined it would end up with Ridley Scott doing another epic to tell us.

Also, debating if Alien or Aliens was the better film is pointless to me, both complete classics in their genres but that's it though, they are nothing alike except the fact they take place in the same universe.

I just don't get the Batman love fest at all. Totally and utterly bemused by it in fact. I thought Batman Begins was ok but strayed too much and as for The Dark Knight, I don't know if it was the hype or what but the reaction to it was so overwhelmingly positive that my expectations were rightly high. When I eventually sat down and watched it, at the end me and the missus just looked at each other as if to say "is that it?". One of the biggest cases of meh I've ever felt. And I pretty much detest the entirety of Peter Jackson's output. Should have been banned from film making after King Kong to be honest. In fact scratch that, it doesn't go far enough, after King Kong Peter Jackson should have been waterboarded...live on televison...for a year. I hate everything about Avatar. Bourne films? Awful shite.

I realise I'll be burned at the stake shortly for these views.  :D

You guys must take your films way more seriously then I do. I'm a sucker for a CGI leave your brain at the door summer blockbuster type. That said am I right in guessing you preferred the last Batman film series with Jim Carrey, Jack Nicholsen and Danny Devito as the villians?

That surprises me as I would have thought these new versions were more suited to you.

CGI makes me genocidal.  ;D

On the one hand the original Batman films look silly and dated now I suppose but on the other I just remember Michael Keaton's and Jack Nicholson's brilliance in the first one and wonder why people think Bale and Ledger are so much better. I'll tell what I do prefer though and that's the Spider-man trilogy. I'll probably get slated again for that but at the way I see it, it's a comic book and those films really stay true to their roots. At the end of the day I should be able to watch a Batman film with my kids.

I'm not a snob, I have no problem with summer blockbusters/popcorn movies but most of today's are lazy, airheaded shit. Big and expensive shouldn't mean empty and treating the audience with utter contempt. I know I've said this before but 30 years ago that meant Raiders of the Lost Ark, Back to the Future or Ghostbusters today it means Kingdom of the Crystal Skull, Transformers or John Carter. It's all so cynical now, no heart. That's why I have such high hopes for Prometheus and I hope they are not dashed by Hollywood's machine.

Wow...I thought I was alone in my thoughts. I know exactly what you mean. Batman Begins was the catalysts for me of stopping going to the cinema (bar taking my daughter to films). The prices are just ridiculous, and then you go and watch a film that has been hyped up and expect greatness. And then you get that....!

I dont mind CGI and or leave your brain at the door films...my most recent leave you brain loving film is Expendables, and Rambo before that. I have watched those two about 6 times each. I didnt LOVE, but enjoyed the Carrey, Nicholson, Arnie, De Veito ones as they were rather comicbook-esq. My problem is BM Begins and The Dark Night were meant to be a little more serious/darker/in depth....I just didnt like em.

Nah I'm saying they don't make 'em like that anymore. It's all hollywood by numbers now and it's rubbish. Actually though I don't know why I said they are treating the audience with contempt because for some reason today's audience lap most of hollywood's shit up so perhaps they are just getting what they deserve. It's incredible how lazy cinema-goers have become, seemingly happy to pay for whatever rubbish has been served up and mass marketed correctly that week ad nauseum. The fact that Avatar is the highest grossing film of all time is a damning indictment on modern audiences. We're at a point where a film like The Artist having some success is seen as a triumph but in truth a large percentage of it's audience had to be "told" to go and see it.
