Most under rated player in the Prem in my opinion

Agreed. Most other fans would probably not rate him at all and some may not even have heard of him but he’s playing as well as, if not better than, VVD. I think I saw his name pop up on one of those articles “top 20 centre halves in the world” which made me smile.

Our other first team defenders are arguably the best or 2nd best in the world (certainly top 5) yet Matip rarely gets the credit he deserves. Is there a better centre back in the league right now on current form………I don’t think there is and I rate him just above VVD on current form which is a big thing to say but I think it’s fair.

If he hadn’t so many injuries then we’d be talking about him being on a par with VVD.

only 2nd best centre back in the league

behind vvd of course.

think one of our best free transfers behind milly and gary mac?

and the way he defends should last him well in his 30s. intelligence and anticipation should get better with age

Loved Gary Mac as all Liverpool fans do of course, but a player who helps a club win the Champions League and a League championship is immediately to the top of the ‘best free transfer list’ - so Joel and Milly, followed by Gary Mac!

On current form he's the best centre back in the league, I think he's playing better than Virg right now

Think it was Tepid who analyzed the very camp nature of some of Joel's play and general behaviors.

He's not just on a different wavelength; Joel doesn't need common, plebian things such as wavelengths.
Not sure analysed is the word! But he’s just different to most footballers.

Matip this season?

Only two players in the league have carried the ball further than Matip this season.

It's a romantic story, the big camp defender. I didn't like the look of him at all when he first signed. I can only imagine Klopp had a word or a kick up the arse and told him to stop holding back, look at you Joel! You can dominate Joel! That's how I picture it.
I've no doubt Virg will be back to his best soon, but can he reclaim his status as our best CB? Joel will only get better as well.

I bet he's injured or carrying something and we're keeping it quiet. It's Matip after all. Made of the same material as Sturridge, Ox and Keita.

Otherwise not playing him today was criminal. :(
