Results Comparison Thread 2023/4
« on: August 29, 2023, 02:12:26 pm »
I didn't do this last year, after 17 consecutive seasons, as I was a bit fed up after the prior season, and our poor start last season.

If there is interest in this, I'll be happy to update the database for last season, and start doing the weekly summaries.

Going by that list, we have a reasonable run until mid December and should be picking up serious points - Man City at the end of Novemebr being the notable stand out fixture.  Mid december till mid feb looks a bitch and will likely decide how our season is really shaping up.

Defo, if we can get our noses out in front it'll help when the rough patch starts.

Injuries, or lack of them, plays such an important, but understated role in how the league pans out.

It wouldn't surprise me if I'll have to drop Brighton out of this analysis, & replaced with West Ham or Villa

I hate to be pessimistic but I think injuries are the only thing that can lead us to a title win ahead of City this season. The good thing is, I think we have a much better squad in terms of availability than at any time under Klopp, and I think City this season are especially vulnerable to injuries. Their squad seems on the small side and KDeB is already basically out til Christmas. We need to keep the pressure on all the way through which will also increase the likelihood of them getting injuries since in theory they won't be able to take their foot off the gas.

Probably.

Remember in our title winning season, we came out of the blocks firing & built up such a lead that even City gave up.

Last season, Arsenal did the same but City managed to keep near, then Arsenal faded as they started to get injuries.

Just looking at that December/January run again and we play at home against Arsenal, Chelsea, Man U and Newcastle.

When you start looking at the league like this, you'd have to say that our fixture list is reasonably favourable and getting 7 from 9 points is a good start for us considering we've played 2 of the top 6 away from home.

One of my favourite threads every season this.

Isn’t there usually a graphic, showing points this season compared to last season’s equivalent fixtures?

The top 8 summary has this info, I stopped doing the graphic stuff a few seasons back, it took too much time.

I think there was another poster who used to do a visual on Prof's thread.

After game 4, we’re 2pts better off this season compared with the equivalent fixtures from last season.

Currently tracking at 2.5ppg vs 1.76ppg for the whole of last season

On course for 95pts at the end of the season

Runs from Jan 13 to Feb 11....don't know how far in advance clubs have to release players.

We have Bournemouth on 1/13, then 2 weeks are free of fixtures.
Home to Chelsea on 1/31, away to Arsenal on 2/3 & home to Burnley on 2/10

Match 5 was a win last season, but a loss to Wolves away on equivalent match basis.

I'll be in the Channel tunnel at kick-off :no

I'm working on a preview of Wolves-Liverpool and wondered what last seasons league table looked like without 12:30 kick-offs. I shouldn't have looked.
