Non-European elections
« on: May 29, 2024, 11:25:32 am »
So, believe it or not, the world is quite big, and there's elections constantly happening worldwide.  There are two going on today, in South Africa and Madagascar.

South Africa is having a general election where 400 seats are being contested.
The ruling ANC (African National Congress, centre-left) currently hold 230 seats, with DA (Democratic Alliance, Centre) holding 84 seats, the EFF (Economic Freedom Fighters, far-left) holding 44 seats, the IFP (Inkatha Freedom Party, right-wing) 14 seats, VF+ (Freedom Front Plus, right-wing) 10 seats, and other parties with 4 or fewer.

Opinion polls seem to have the ANC fighting to retain a majority, but a new party, MKP (uMkhonto weSizwe, left-wing) is currently polling well at around 11% of the total votes due to be cast.

Madagascar is having a general election (parliamentary election) where 151 seats are up for grabs.
Of these 151 seats, 84 are currently held by the centre-left (according to Wiki) TGV (Young Malagasies Determined) with 16 held by the centre-right TIM ('I Love Madagascar').  The remaining 51 seats are made up of minor parties and independents.

I can't find much on this election.

Mexico is due to have a general election next week on June 2, and Serbia will hold local elections the same day.  More info can be found here: https://www.ndi.org/elections-calendar with great info on each upcoming election to be found here: https://www.electionguide.org/elections/type/upcoming/

Last time I went there I saw masturbating chimpanzees. Whether you think that's worthy of £22 is up to you. All I'll say is I now have an annual pass.

South Africa's results are coming through, and the ANC are likely to need to power-share somewhat as they're not going to hold a majority once all districts are counted.  They didn't polling as low as they have, maybe 45% as a lowest point so 40% is a massive surprise.  As of now, 98% of results are in and it stands like this:

ANC - 40%
DA - 22%
MK - 15%
EFF - 9%
IFP - 4%
