Was there two summers ago and Tolar is the currency.  As far as I was aware at the time, it was the only currency acceptable. Now it may have been possible to use lire or schillings at the time, but never noticed it.

The currency used to be directly linked to the Deutsch Mark, but with Germany now using the Euro, I'm not sure how this has affected Slovenia.

What is important is that the currency is useless to you once you leave the country.  You cannot change Tolars back into sterling or dollars outside Slovenia. Thomas Cook will laugh at you.  That is unless they have changed the regulations in the last 2 years.  I ended up with a load of cash after a holiday there (everything was so cheap) and assumed I'd change it when I got home only to find I couldn't.  However it means I now have around £100 worth of Tolar to take back to Ljubljana.

Which is nice.  :)

I think you can go into a bank or bureau de change at one of the border towns and change it, but not in the UK.

I don't know, but I suspect that you may be able to change money back at Trieste in Italy as it is almost on the border and there is a lot of cross border traffic in that area.

Hi tetti.

your 'shopping' habits are now legendary.

I never carry cash. and always use a cashpoint at the airport.

only concern at the moment is a quick exit out of Austria.

I wasn't gonna carry cash, but the car needs 12 euros at the airport (which I can CC or Switch). Don't think I'll need any currency till I get to Slovenia. Anyone know about tolls / taxes that I might need cash (Euros/Schillings/Tolars) for.
Then I'll just go to cashpoint in Ljubljana for my food/DRINK and come back the next day. Any currency left, I'll just spend on fags.

Just had a chat with local bank and they say that Slovenia is still a restricted country in terms of currency,

This means that according to them, they will not buy back Tolar if you bring it home.  Said as long as you take one of the three main currencies (sterling, euro and dollars) you should be okay.

Apparently the reason is that because the country is very small, the market for its currency is also small and therefore banks don't want to be bothered with it, as they won't make much money.

Why do some places have this rule ?

This rule started in the Scandinavian countries because in their northern areas it never gets light in the winter. It was deemed necessary to make it law ( all cars imported to, or made in Scandinavia are required by law to have lights on when the ignition is turned ) because although it was recomended, not all motorists took the hint. Actually, it did reduce accidents and was therefore adopted, although they don't get so dark, by other countries. Personally I only drive on the Autobahn and or other motoways With my lights on, day or night.

I was told the same, about £800-900.

Further to what I said earlier, apparently some bank's will take the currency back off you, but they have to send it away to a special section and it may take weeks for you to get the cash.  They also charge a larger rate of commission because of this.

May be an idea to have some local currency for any toll charges on the motorway. Unless they take cards/Euros.

TC will only change back 1000 Tolar notes and above.

I took 9000 Tolars over but ran out quick. Got 10000 more out of the hole in the wall and basically ended up giving the whole lot to the barmaid at the Skeleton pub.
