The NFL Thread
« on: August 8, 2005, 12:29:54 am »
Well, training camps are in full swing and the season is about a month away, figured I'd start up this bad boy for all things NFL, that is if any of you are into that sort of thing, and no, I'm not talking about Manchester United... ;D

I guess I'll start it off with this, watching the Hall of Fame induction ceremonies really got me excited for the upcoming season, afraid though that it will be the last for Brett Favre and the winning ways of my Packers, dark days seem to be on the horizon...

Come on Brett, one more charge!

Australia has an aspiring punter with the Jets, his name is Ben Graham, and apparently leaves some of the American punters in the shade, though is a trifle inconsistent. This is a report I picked up of a Jets fan site where they give a report on Graham's punting:

"The absolute highlight of the morning session, however, was the punting of Ben Graham. I know a lot has been written about him here and in the different news outlets. I gotta say though that you need to see it to believe it. I’ve never seen anyone kick a ball over 70 yards thru the air. He nailed one right around 80 friggin yards! When you
see it you almost laugh. Both him and Knorr did battle back & forth though. Knorr had a couple boomers of his own but NOTHING like Graham. Two problems I see. Graham’s biggest hurdle is just being consistent. He’d hit 2 great ones, 1 bad one, 1 or 2 good ones, 1 great one and on and on. Knorr, while seldom matching Graham, was just more consistent. Probably to the tune of 35+ avg. Not great I know but the one thing that scares me is who is gonna be the place holder. Grahams just now learning this and I can honestly say that at least 1 of Nooges missed kicks ( relax there was only 2 )was due to a miss handled hold. Does anyone think him winning the P job will hinge on his acclimation of the place holding duties? It will be interesting nonetheless."

Red Death, I'm a bit confused, mate. Is this guy a punter or a field goal kicker? If he's a punter he won't have a holder.

I (and many in the UK) lost interest when Plan B kicked in and all the franchises start moving around.

Final straw was when the Browns left their old stadium and the dogpound. Kosar, Ozzie Newsome, Kevin Mack, McNeil, Earnest Byner, etc. Screw the Broncos.  :'(

Heheh! You were a Browns fan in the Schottenheimer days eh? I was a Broncos fan when they beat the Browns with 'The Drive' in the AFC Championship game ('86? or later?)... Didn't the Browns change into the Ravens, then another Browns franchise was set up? I liked it best when there were 28 teams and the Raiders were the only team known for flitting about all over the shop... now everyone's at it  :no

A punter: he also has to hold for the kicker for some reason. Something to do with the 3rd QB not being allowed or something.

Well I think we all know that Joey Harrington is going to lead the Lions to the Super Bowl.  While I hate to hope anything good ever happens to Detroit, St. Joseph is just too cool.  Shame he's stuck with such poor fans.

please, that strawberry and wine quarterback will lose his starting job this year...he's that bad, he has all the tools on offense now to do something and he won't because he is garbage...

Favre will light him up as usual during the season...

Gotcha. Sounds like he's been asked to be the holder for the field goal kicker and it's common in the NFL for the punter to have that job.

yea, Dolphins fan here. Looking forward to the Hall of Fame game tonight. Hopefully Ricky wil be playing with something to prove. I know people say he is just playing so he wont have to pay back the money he would owe the Dolphins, but I don't think his heart has EVER really been in football and he was still great. But can't see him in Miami this time next year. Him and Ronnie Brown are too good to keep both of them.

Just sign Ronnie!

Aye, another Dolphins follower here, although I'm a much more casual NFL fan than most on here it seems. Still, looking forward to Sunday night coverage on Sky. Was also hoping to catch a game when I'm in Chicago for the marathon in October, but the Bears are @ the Browns that day. Hopefully I can make a bar somewhere and load up on nachos!

I'd be up for that fantasy thing if I (a) had sky so I could watch some games and (b) knew more than about 5 current players (and 4 of them are probably 16 year + veterans!). Stuck in the past when it comes to NFL, me  :wave Warren Moon playing for the Houston Oilers, Vinny Testaverde throwing more interceptions than touchdowns for the Buccs, Walter Payton retiring and Barry Sanders taking over his mantle, the Joe Montana/Steve Young to Jerry Rice touchdown trail at Frisco, Bo Jackson playing half seasons for the Raiders because he played baseball too, John Elway being feckin ace but always having a crap quarterback rating, the Falcons changing their team colours under Jerry Glanville... christ I could go on and on!

You cannot imagine just how bad they are now compared to the great teams they had in the 80's and 90's.

Worst team in the league last year.

Excellent linebacking, decent defensive line, but the secondary and pretty much the entire offense is a joke. Oh for the glory days again.....

More to the point, did anyway collect 'Americam Football' weekly. Very serious, but ultimatley excellent magazine, from Marshall Cavandish. Series went well into the hundreds.
