RIP Bill. You looked after Mick Lyons and that should not be forgotten, as well as the numerous other folks you helped, blue and red.

Bill you were a great blue and a great man.

Just watched back his speech at Anfield ten years back for Hillsborough. Brought a tear to my eye. His humanity and decency shone through. He was Everton to the core and my recollection of his time as chairman is that he acted always in the best interest of the club and never for personal gain. He was class. Rest in peace Bill.

This news saddened me more than I expected to be honest.

I have spent years laughing at him and his team, the Arteta money, at him starring in Corrie with Rita Fairclough, but there was never no real malice.
I then read again his comments in 2013 over Hillsborough, 'they picked on the wrong city, they picked on the wrong mums', what powerful words.

He simply wanted the best for the team he loved. How can you fault the man for that?

RIP Bill, don't worry about the Arteta money.  ;)

Just seen BBC tribute to the man and it was quite touching. Sounds like he stuck by his friends no matter what and that is what he did when it came to his home city when the government left us down. He stood beside us in our greatest need and for that he will be forever blessed. RIP

His speech at the Hillsborough Memorial Service was utter class, there were a few tears shed on the Kop.

Looking at the outpouring of love on Twitter from so many in the acting world certainly opened my eyes to how much of a giant he was in this area as well.

Genuinely saddened by this. Condolences to his friends and family

Going to be another one were you hear more and more stories of the amazing things he has done for people out of the kindness of his heart

Some Everton fans should be ashamed of themselves for how they've treated him, especially in the past 12 months. He loved that club and only wanted the best for it and they made it so toxic that he had to stay away for fear of his safety

Just seen BBC tribute to the man and it was quite touching. Sounds like he stuck by his friends no matter what and that is what he did when it came to his home city when the government left us down. He stood beside us in our greatest need and for that he will be forever blessed. RIP
There were times when I was in awe of him. I listened to the "He's not heavy" moment on the radio with tears streaming down my cheeks. He nailed it - and some - that night. Like most of us he was also a flawed character and some of the better journalists who genuinely knew him have said as much. His passion for Everton was undeniable and I'd say to those Bitters who hold his playing a Red in the Liverbirds against him - it's called acting  ::) But perhaps his passion was also his Achilles heel. When I listen to some of our fans during various transfer windows, I always feel a sense of relief that they're not in charge of the club because they let their emotion and desire to compete get in the way of common sense. In Bill's case this was made worse by him getting a role in the club - along with the best seat in the house - which most fans could only dream of and I think that his passion and desire to stay in charge clouded his judgement and led to some shocking decisions. The situation was likely made worse by another double edged sword. Bill appears to have place enormous importance on loyalty and he remained a trusted ally to many. But there's a huge difference between telling someone what they want to hear as opposed to what they need to hear. Journalists and friends who dared criticize the club were often cold-shouldered and I get the impression that he was surrounded by far too many "yes" men and women. That in turn led to some serious misjudgements which leaves the club on the precipice of financial melt-down and with a complete breakdown in the relationship with the fans. We rightly view their increasingly toxic element with disdain - the younger ones in particular are the very antithesis of the truly wonderful Union SG and Villarreal fans who made their visits to Anfield such a positive experience for everyone (including ourselves). But there are many older and wiser Blues who were also critical of the man. Those who were closer to him might perhaps reflect today that it would have been kinder to gently persade Bill into a different role in the club - some sort of "life president" perhaps - which would have allowed him to be in and around his beloved Blues whilst allowing arguably more competent individuals to run the show. It would at least have taken a not-well man out of the firing line and ensured that the last years of an inherently decent individual were a more enjoyable experience as a supporter - even allowing for their wretched form - and I think it makes me especially sad today that it was not the case.

Wouldn’t be surprised if some tosser Kardashianizes it and set it in LA.

I know he gets a lot of stick from Blues but that speech he did at the Hillsborough Memorial shows how proud he is if his Scouse roots.

Genuinely proud unlike some of the other celebrities who moved out and became proud Tories.

Sad news in a sad week for football. Like many I remember that speech and remember how grateful I was for it.

This goes beyond rivalry, it’s about respect, and that respect has increased more after hearing about some of his generosity to people in need.

Absolutely. I saw it when it toured in the early 80s (I think) at the Newcastle Theatre Royal. A couple of the McGann lads were in the cast and John Conteh was the narrator. Time spent in Liverpool & Anfield in particular stood me in good stead. I seemed to become the unofficial translator at times for Mrs Stubbins and the folks around us.

Sad loss the passing of Bill Kenwright. A warm, genuine and compassionate man and, as is becoming increasingly apparent, an extremely generous man. The City of Liverpool should feel rightfully proud of him.

I am sure we will, probably in appropriate way to both him and Bobby Charlton. Bill Kenwright was always very supportive of the Hillsborough Campaign, and did a lot behind the scenes.

Heard the news yesterday but couldn't respond. Sad news indeed. Despite his numerous flaws, Bill was a decent chap and a good son of the city.

My hope is for Everton fans to have time, and the years give them the chance to reflect on Bill's efforts on behalf of their club.

RIP.

LFC to honour Bill Kenwright and Sir Bobby Charlton at Anfield

Ahead of tonight’s Europa League clash with Toulouse, the club will mark the sad passing of Everton chairman Kenwright by playing The Hollies’ He Ain’t Heavy, He’s My Brother prior to kick-off.

This song has been chosen because – as part of his and Everton’s unwavering support for the victims of the Hillsborough disaster – Kenwright personally picked it to be played at Goodison Park following the release of the Hillsborough Independent Panel report in September 2012.

His choice of song that evening perfectly summed up the solidarity that united Reds and Blues everywhere. Two children holding hands in the centre-circle, one in a Liverpool shirt and the other in Everton blue, became another powerful symbol of the fight for justice.

The song was later re-recorded by a group of musicians and celebrities under the name ‘The Justice Collective’, to raise money for charities associated with the families of the victims. It was released in December 2012 and became that year’s Christmas No.1 in the UK.

“The song just seemed to sum up everything about the relationship between Everton and Liverpool,” Kenwright later said.

Also in his honour, the players, managers and backroom staff will wear black armbands during the game against Toulouse.

On Sunday afternoon, LFC will also pay its respects to Sir Bobby, the legendary Manchester United player and club director, who died last weekend.

A true footballing great, Sir Bobby was a key figure in England’s World Cup triumph in 1966 and retired from international football having earned 106 caps and scored 49 goals.

Across a 17-year playing spell with United, meanwhile, the midfielder totalled 758 appearances and 249 goals, helping his club to three league titles, the 1968 European Cup and an FA Cup.

Off the pitch, Sir Bobby was close friends with Bill Shankly and was part of a tribute to the victims of the Hillsborough tragedy in September 2012 at Anfield, following the publication of the Independent Panel Report into the disaster.

He later personally invited families of the 97 fans who died as a result of the tragedy at Hillsborough in April 1989 to watch a match between United and Liverpool at Old Trafford.

In memory of Sir Bobby, Anfield will come together ahead of kick-off against Nottingham Forest for a period of applause. The players, managers and backroom staff will also wear black armbands.

It was also featured in the 2008 Film "Of Time and The City" created by Kensington's own Terence Davies who died a couple of weeks ago at around the same age as Kenwright (Bill was born nearby in Wavertree).

From the BBC article below:

Yep, loads of stories coming out about him donating to individuals and causes, and not publicising it, as that wasn’t of any interest to him.   One I read today was that he gave 25k to help get a day rehab facility in Liverpool off the ground - the first one ever.  He came across as a thoroughly kind and compassionate man.

The city should think about a statue to him possibly along the lines of a bust like the one of Sir Henry Wood of Proms fame.
Perhaps have it outside the Empire where he first fell in love with the stage, or by the Doddy statue in the station. Or perhaps in the Cathedral where it would be more looked after/safe from idiots.
The artistic legacy of the guy alone makes him worthy of such recognition.

Didn't realise he was so prolific.

It’s actually quite staggering when you look at what he has been involved with. As well as a couple of Tony awards, for the more famous productions, he has been involved in hundreds of shows, and was also involved in trying saving the Playhouse

Get past the footy bit at the start and it’s staggering how many shows he was involved with as director and producer.
