Gordon Hodgson - New Hall of Fame Member
« on: February 18, 2003, 01:49:31 pm »
The latest member has just been elected to the Hall of Fame this week - 1930-1940 Gordon Hodgson

Born in South Africa in 1904 Hodgson went on to make 377 appearances for the Reds and scored a superb 241 goals for the Reds. That only takes care of the main games.

He was signed in the middle of the 1920's following a tour by the Springboks.  Arthur Riley also arrived at the same time as Hodgson and Nieuwenhuys followed later.

Hodgson thoughwas not only a superb footballer but also a good cricketer and a baseball player too.  Although South African by birth he did play for them and later actually qualified to play for England where he made three appearances.

In 1930-31 he became the then leading season scorer with 36 goals in the season.  His career saw him become the leading Red of all time until the great Roger Hunt broke the record many years later.

After starting his career in 1925/26 season he left the club on 8 January 1936 for Aston Villa.  A year later he joined Leeds where he finished his career(apart from some guest appearances elsewhere through the early WWII years).

He became manager of Port Vale in 1946 and was still in carge when he died of cancer in 1951.

I've read up a bit of history on our great club, and he seems to be the outstanding candidate from that decade.
The eternal silence of these infinite spaces frightens me

Hodgson THE HAT-TRICK King, scored more hat-tricks than any other player in our history.
Not likely to ever be beaten in todays game.

A fantastic record  :o

and a fellow South African to boot.  ;D

The only one at the club now likely to beat it would be Owen if he stayed for many a year to come.  He's on 9 at the moment to Hodgsons 17.

full list?
http://www.liverweb.org.uk/hattrick.htm

Owen on the other hand may equal Rush tomorrow night at Auxerre with a 20th euro goal.

With this hall of fame though it's good as it helps to highlight back the players of yesteryear who people sometimes forget or think we only existed from the 60s.

So far I oculdn't argue against any of the elected members.

Yeah - here's what i have
Sam Raybould
Signed for the Reds from New Brighton in 1900 for an undisclosed fee although I have a record that he actually came from Ilkeston Town(having played earlier for New Brighton)
Scorer of an amazing 31 goals in 33 games during the 1902-03 season.
He was top scorer for the reds on four occasions and such was his value to the Reds that when he was injured in 1903-04 season teh Reds slipped down to 17th place.
He won two championships as well as a second division winning medal during his stint at the club before leaving to join Sunderland in 1907.
Whilst at the club he represented Football League against the Scots Football league and in total played 224 times for the Reds and managed 128 goals for the Reds which is one more than Owen has at the moment.

Andy, just had my 1st look at the Hall Of Fame.
Great stuff.
Some tremendous muzzies from the early days.
I'm thinking of growing one like that myself.  ;D
Also a whole load of clubs who I've never heard of who we bought some of the players from.
It'll be interesting to see how it develops too as the further forward we go, the more competition there is for the coveted places.
Only naming two from the 60's 70's and 80's won't be easy.

Gordon Hodgson - unbelievable LFC stats
« Reply #13 on: December 11, 2023, 07:55:39 am »
With all the spotlight on Mo getting his 200th goal for the club which, of course, is a fantastic achievement we always see the list of the top scorers with Rushie, Sir Roger and the little known Gordon Hodgson as the top three all time scorers and in delving a bit further you come across a player who had some unbelievable stats. Not only was he banging in goals in for the Reds every week during the football season but when most players would be having a few months off in the summer he was opening the bowling for Lancashire! Sadly he died very young at 51 and will forever be in the list of all time LFC legends here is a brief summary of his career:

Gordon Hodgson was born in Johannesburg, South Africa on 16th April 1904. He played football for Benoni, Rustenberg, Pretoria and Transvaal. In 1924 he played against a touring Liverpool side. The centre-forward had a good game and soon afterwards he was persuaded to join the Football League side.

Hodgson made his debut against Manchester City in October 1928. He scored his first goal a fortnight later in a 3-3 draw against Manchester United at Old Trafford.

In his first season he scored 18 goals. He continued this fine form over the next few seasons: 1930-31 (36), 1931-32 (27), 1932-33 (24), 1934-35 (25) and 1934-35 (29).

Hodgson was also a talented cricketer and played in 56 games for Lancashire. He had a bowling average of 27.75 and his best wicket taking performance was 6-77.

Hodgson won his first international cap for England against Northern Ireland on 20th October 1930. Although he had been born in South Africa he qualified for this country because both his parents had been born in England). England won the game 5-1. Hodgson scored one of the goals in the 4-0 victory over Wales. He won his third and last cap against Scotland on 28th March, 1934.

Hodgson's international opportunities were restricted because he had the misfortune to be playing at the same time as centre-forwards of the quality of Dixie Dean, Jimmy Hampson, George Camsell, Tom Waring and Fred Tilson.

Thanks for putting that together. Didn’t know he qualified for and played for England.

In terms of Mo, Gordons goal total is the last achievable record to beat. It feels like he needs to continue scoring as he is for another 2 seasons after this to get near it. There’s a few if’s around that. If he stays, if he stays fit etc. At this point I’d imagine he’ll surpass Billy Liddell if he stays next year.

Always wonder what someone like Hodgson would be worth in today's game 241 goals in 377 games is a brilliant return and me having been an ex Kop season ticket holder who emigrated to South Africa 40 years ago to play cricket, would you believe, I went in the opposite direction so have always been interested in Hodgson's career and how well he did in the UK and you don't get pro footballers playing county cricket anymore like they used to.

Pity there's no videos of the games back then as it would be great just to see what type of finisher he was as he was certainly a scoring machine.
