The German midfielder arrived from Bayer Leverkusen for £10 million and begins pre-season training at Melwood alongside all non-World Cup participants on Monday morning.

After completing his transfer last week on Merseyside, Can flew back to Germany to say his goodbyes before moving to Merseyside.

“I am starting an exciting new chapter in my footballing career” he wrote on his official Facebook page. “It’s a dream come true to become a member of the LFC family! This support of the fans, the history and the great team! What a Club!”

Speaking of his new squad number, Can described it as an honour to take Carragher’s former shirt.

“I am going to do everything to win trophies. I thank Brendan [sp] Rodgers for his trust! I will be wearing the number 23, Jamie Carraghers number! What an honour!”

He signed off “Looking forward to meeting my teammates and fans!”

Liverpool’s first pre-season friendly takes place in Copenhagen against FC Brondby a week on Wednesday, before they face Preston the following Saturday – the first opportunity for Reds fans to see Can in action.

lets just say that I'd lean more towards heir to Allen or Lucas than heir to Gerrard at the moment.

After that first kickabout I well might change my mind back based on his outstanding perimeter jogging start , but anyway I though Hendo was the heir to Gerrard. Geez its hard to keep up around here.

Emre seems confident and relaxed, looking forward to his contributions. Him, Allen and Hendo will be a nightmare to meet in midfield.

On an other note, how bad are those interviews on the home page?! I strongly dislike questions like: " how pleased are you..., you must be happy.." Horrible journalism, don't led the subject on, let him use his own words.
