Unless he has some clauses in his current contract I find it a bit strange to offer a contract so early.

He has a few years left on his current contract and we are deciding to offer him a couple more? If decides he doesn't want to stay after this year I doubt the length of his contract is going to make a real difference.

So are we just effectively rewarding him with more money for last season performances. I would have thought we would try to save the money for now.

Best to get the contract renewals in as early as possible with your best players. Two years would seem like a long time to go, but the player stalls for just one further season and we're in a position where we have to sell or risk losing him for free the following year. Not saying he's on their level, but Messi and Ronaldo seem to get a new contract every season.

Made up that he got his extension, even though it's a shitload of money. In footballing terms, he's more than worth it.

Just watched his contract signing interview. He says he hasn't shown what he is capable of. That is truly a frightening prospect to think Daniel can get even better.

The worrying thing is that there's another fucking international break next month as well! But after that there's no England games till March so we hopefully can manage him and keep him fit for several months ourselves as we badly need an in form Sturridge.

With Balo not joining up with Italy, hopefully that gives them 2 weeks to work together and come up with a partnership that gets the best out of both of them.

Makes a huge difference. It is likely that his initial contract was based on him not being a top player. 18 months later and he is up there with the best in the league so you need to reward that improvement now, and not after other teams and his greedy agent has turned his head.

Trying to save money now and reacting after is what loses you players

He is doing fine. Not sure how much more he can do without trying too hard.

Just needs to remain fit and keep performing. He has been brilliant since joining the club.

He's always been talented. He's just now at a club where the fans appreciate him and has a manager who knows how to get the best out of him. All those "attitude" problems have been non existent.

Up in London yesterday, and the amount of Arsenal supporters telling me with absolute certainty that Welbeck is a better player than Sturridge.

Usually included were the phrases 'all round game', 'work rate', 'team player' and 'Thierry Henry started as a winger who didn't score much'.

They thought he was shit 2 months ago.
