---------------------------------------

Starts in less than a month, thought we can do with a thread for it. No other footie in June, and it has all the essentials to be a thrilling one. the To me it has always been better/more exciting than the Euros. Was nicely surprised to find out most of the stadiums were completely renovated for this one :)

The last time Dunga was in charge of Brazil for the tournament, they swept Argentina in the final and did it pretty convincigly. Who are you rooting for?

Cheers for the preview - it was actually great to have all of the pictures of the stadia in one spot  ;)

Anyhow I'm looking forward to some great June evenings/nights of footy.

I'd have to say that I'll undoubtedly be pulling for Uruguay thanks to a certain Luis Alberto Suárez Díaz.

EDIT: will probably still root for Uruguay even knowing that he's still banned for the entire tourney :(

Nice OP, mate. What channel is this being broadcast on in the UK?

EDIT: Just found this on an Independent article:

No UK TV provider has picked up the rights yet but all matches will be streamed live on Xbox Live and YouTube.

Apparently it's being broadcast on Premier Sports
But that's either through Sky/Virgin or online I believe.  Doesn't appear to be HD either which is a shit sandwich.

Gold Cup for the USA this summer.

Mexico are choosing two different squads for the Copa and Gold Cup. Rumor is their strongest team will be in the Gold Cup.  Reason-- winner of the Gold Cup, if it's not the USA, will have a playoff v USA to be the representative in the FIFA World Cup Confederations Cup. ( The one they have 1 year before the actual World Cup). Mexico or USA wants to be in that and play the top teams to acclimate to Russia.

3 weeks left isn't it?

Why didn't they merged it with the one they are going to make next year? seems a bit silly to me.

For Copa America and African Nations Cup, some changes to the format and organization are badly needed. But if somebody were to mention it, they get criticized for Euro-centric view etc.

African Nations Cup is held every two years. That's just too much, they should cut it down. Its midseason, and its too often. They should think of this change not as mimicking Euro tourneys but rather World Cup tourneys, which are also every 4 years. Otherwise, international football is full of useless matches.

Copa America has been a mess. It has been every two years, three years, 4 years, now they will try 1 year. They have invited Asian teams, North American teams, European teams.

This is not even true. The Centenario edition is one off, and the next will be held 4 years from now, in 2019, then 2023, etc, as its been since 2007.

Ahem... :P

Real Madrid forward Javier "Chicharito" Hernandez, Real Sociedad's Carlos Vela, Villarreal teammates Giovani and Jonathan dos Santos, Malaga's Guillermo Ochoa, Porto's Hector Herrera and Diego Reyes, PSV Eindhoven's Andres Guardado, Espanyol's Hector Moreno, Watford's Miguel Layun and Twente's Jesus Manuel Corona were all called up by the Mexico Football Federation on Friday as El Tri named its Europe-based players for Gold Cup 2015.

Both Malaga and Real Sociedad confirmed that their respective players, Ochoa and Vela, were called up to Mexico's squad.

El Tri's manager Miguel Herrera had previously announced that the Gold Cup -- despite the lower quality of teams involved compared to the Copa America -- was a priority, because winning it leads to a playoff against the United States for a place at the Confederations Cup in Russia in 2017.

We're locals, and even though we have a lot of great players (especially Alexis, Vidal and Bravo), I still think in terms of squad depth, Brazil and Argentina have us absolutely beaten.

Oh well. Hope we do actually end up defying the odds and winning the damn thing for the first time. It's amazing, actually - our adult national team hasn't won anything of note, ever. The closest things would be 3rd place in 1962 and the Bronze Medal in Sydney 2000. I hope we can change that.

Why is there a play-off for the Confederations Cup place rather it just going straight to the Gold Cup winners?

Brazil 1-0 Honduras (Firmino - 33')

Filipe Luis with a great run up the left to set up Firmino for a nice finish. Luis is very lucky to be on the pitch after a wild tackle just before it. Coutinho with the hockey assist.

It will be hard for Uruguay to keep the title without Suarez, but it's also a big chance for the new young players to test themselves for the WC qualifiers.
"I look at him doing all sorts of crazy shit and mostly I burst out laughing at his insane genius.
I mean, if his first reaction to a ball bouncing in front of him 40 yards from goal is 'I'm going to whack this into the net from here', you just have to laugh at the sheer improbability of it all."

They have an up and coming young lad, named Forlan from what I read.
Messi in fact doesn't have a recognizable trait.

This should be good. If Brazil win their group they play the runners up of the Argentina/Uruguay group in the Quarters which will be tasty.

Who are favourites for this? Are Chile expected to do well on home soil? Can Colombia build on their great World Cup? Can Uruguay do well without Suarez? Or will it be one of Brazil or Argentina?

Why is there a play-off for the Confederations Cup place rather it just going straight to the Gold Cup winners?

The Confederations Cup place goes to the winner of the previous two Gold Cups. So there is a playoff between who wins the two contested Gold Cups to have the best in form Country going there. It also makes the Gold Cup something to try to win every tournament.

And it makes more money for CONCACAF if there is a playoff.

The Gold Cup does not have the same prestige as the Euro's. As realistically it's usually the USA or Mexico who wins it. This is the 13th Gold Cup. Mexico have won 6, USA 5, Canada 1.

So the USA will try to win to avoid a playoff. Mexico, or ANother, will try to win it to get into the playoff.

Mexico consider this Gold Cup more important tournament than the Copa America. For a couple reasons, To get one over on the USA and be the top team in the region and to get to the Confederations Cup.  Hence the "A" team for the Gold Cup and the "B" team for the Copa.

Who are favourites for this? Are Chile expected to do well on home soil?

I hope we do. I mean, this is the best chance we've got in, like, a hundred years. It'd be quite something.

Going to be boring and pick Argentina here.
