Not recently but my 745p Vedanta shares bought in April are looking good a the mo! Also have some Indus Gas bought at 196p in July. Not cashing either in just yet though.

Anybody got any good suggestions for more good opportunities in natural resources before the year end? I am quite interested in something more in natural gas even though my Gasol investment earlier this year has not yet taken off.

Anyone know where I can get historic P/E ratios by market? I know S&P's around 15 but not sure about London stocks...

Been googling but getting really old search results!

We use subscription-based databases in my firm for this sort of info. The only time I have seen it published publicly is in the papers is around New Year when they cover the performance of FTSE-100, AIM, etc over the previous 12 months. I imagine that other publications such as Investors Chronicle also publish similar data. Otherwise there are publicly available logins for Thomson's One Banker database floating around online. Details are available if you search hard enough.

Dec 11 (Reuters) - U.S. oilfield services company Superior Energy Services Inc (SPN.N) said it planned to acquire British subsea services provider Hallin Marine Subsea International (HMS.L) for about 96.5 million pounds ($157.4 million) in cash, sending Hallin's shares up 76.7 percent. The offer price of 233 pence a share represents a premium of 87 percent to Hallin's Thursday close and values the company at 103.5 million pounds on a fully diluted basis. Hallin's board recommended the proposed offer, Superior Energy said in a statement. Hallin had a turnover of $60.3 million for the six months ended June. 30. Superior Energy said the acquisition would be funded using its currently committed debt financing arranged by JP Morgan Chase Bank.

All good. Purchased Hallin Marine at 143p.

Is anyone else feeling skittish here?

I lightened up last week. Lightened up a lot. This whole Bernanke thing is a little out of left field. Wall Street seems to have been simultaneously freaked out by the new proposed banking regulations and at the same time, grew a pair to declare Jihad on Obama.

Am I reading into this much? We broke the 50DMA on the S&P, that's always worth an alarm bell, though.

Baz? JP?

I'm net short, so very happy ;D

I see the S&P trading between 1050 & 1150 through the year, so range bound, establishing a base after the "strange" v-recovery we had last year.

It's interesting to see that since the massive rally from around this time last year to a few months ago, the trend was curbed around the Nakheel/Dubai and Greece debacles. And now Obama's come out with his regulations regarding prop trading etc. and it might just hit the banks hard. Initially.

They'll find ways around it won't they? I mean defining 'prop trading' in itself will be hard- how do they separate it from hedging the flow positions and market making? There's a grey area which might allow banks to get around it. Especially when you think that the biggest prop traders (probably) are Goldmans, and they're a bunch of geniuses at this sort of thing (as in finding loopholes and making money from them).

I think keeping an eye on how QE and government programmes supporting the troubled assets are pegged back and reversed, will be the most important thing in the coming months. Not sure what to make of the current Volcker ruling- indeed, I have to read up more about it (haven't been keeping an eye on the news much in the last month or so as I've had to divert full attention to studying for exams!)

Initial thoughts were that it's interesting that there seems to be a bit of a stir in markets... so maybe there is something that's spooked some of the big players. I wonder if it'll last though and if it's just a shock reaction to a surprise?

What did you do?

I bought a few ETF's triple short yesterday in the pre-market yesterday at 1:00, put some sell prices in, then immediately got in the car to drive up to Liverpool to attend a launch of an exhibit that a friend is curating.  On the way up I asked my wife to check on the IPhone to see what was happening in the market, and found out I'd made 4% on them!

Great weekend, free drinks at the launch, great exhibition of John Thompson China prints from the early 19th century, dinner with friends at the Hope St Hotel, made some money, off to the derby tomorrow morning.......when we win, life will be determined to be good!

BTW, my brother has just opened some nice Italian's that we bought together last year in Tuscany...enjoying them as I type!

Same, but not triple leveraged - I went with SDS.

I lightened up a lot the last fortnight though. I also took profits on RAX. I was short ITM January calls on refiners FTO and TSO, who have been getting battered, and I let them expire in the money. The positions I have right now are some more refiners (doesn't pay to sell now, and I get divis), some NFLX, and a boatload of VMV, Massachusetts bonds, paying 7.5% tax free.

Sweet. My eccentric mate found some Italian pig farmer in Malden, MA, who gives lessons in curing ham to make prosciutto. He's going to cross train me in two weeks  ;D

Nice. I stopped off at the NH state packie on my way back from Montreal on Wednesday to pick up some everyday chianti. Monsanto and Banfi. I'm really kicking myself that I didn't stock up even more on the 2004s. Great year for everyday Italian.

Not an expert by any means, but since BP's share price is down heavily today would now be the time to invest in them, they are bound to sort out the leak eventually and when it does, since they are an Oil company, their share price would inevitably go back to pre Spil levels
YNWA
