The team at its worst does look disjointed and signings like Diaz, Gakpo and Nunez have got us nowhere. They're all massive downgrades on the committee buys that were Mane, Firmino and Salah.
Going back to the DoF model can only be a good thing.
The committee buys that got us to 4th in their first year together? That had the benefit of not playing in deep domestic cup runs for any of their first 4-5 years playing together? That were brought in over the course of three years (two with PL experience) and allowed to acclimate rather than being brought in over the course of 12 months and expected to win the league from the off? The three that were boosted massively by signings like Van Dijk, Fabinho, Alisson and Andy Robertson all joining and peaking together?
I’m not arguing the current lads are better - that was a generational front three that I’m almost certain the committee couldn’t replicate with double the money now - but the lads that have come in have done well, we’re in transition, Klopp’s running out of gas, the squad has flaws and has been decimated by injuries, I don’t think it’s fair to say the current lads are ‘massive downgrades’. The old lads were brilliant, but don’t let nostalgia let you forget they weren’t always amazing and they too had periods like the current lads where they stunk the gaff out. We lost the league in 20/21 due to injuries, but that shocking run where our season flushed down the drain, we lost a lot of those games due to poor finishing from our forwards, they had bad spells too, it’s just easier to forget them when you’re summarising their entire time here rather than their first 18-30 months
