Counter-terror police are investigating three packages containing explosives found at Heathrow Airport, London City Airport and Waterloo station.

The "small improvised explosive devices" were found in A4 postal bags, the Metropolitan Police said.

The force's Counter Terrorism Command is treating it as a "linked series" and "keeping an open mind" about motives.

Irish police are assisting the Met as the Heathrow and Waterloo packages had Republic of Ireland stamps.

Heathrow's Compass Centre was evacuated after a package was reported to police at about 09:55 GMT.

The device set on fire when staff opened the bag.

Scotland Yard said: "The packages - all A4-sized white postal bags containing yellow Jiffy bags - have been assessed by specialist officers to be small improvised explosive devices.

"These devices, at this early stage of the investigation, appear capable of igniting an initially small fire when opened."

A Heathrow spokeswoman said the airport would assist the police investigation into the "criminal act".

The Gardaí confirmed it was also assisting the Met.

Ireland's postal service identified the stamps as its "Love & Wedding" design for greeting cards, wedding invitations and thank-you cards.

The Compass Centre, which is an office for Heathrow staff rather than part of the passenger terminals, remains closed.

The level of intelligence involved at major airports in the the Uk is incredible,I did a stint at manny airport on passport control once. It was roughly half a year or so before 9/11 but they knew something was happening because the training was about Lockerbie. That was red alert,serious buisiness..

"The package was not opened and no one was injured. The emergency services were alerted and several buildings within the estate were evacuated as a precaution. A controlled explosion of the device was carried out this afternoon by EOD.

A group calling itself the IRA has claimed it sent explosive devices sent to three London transport hubs and the University of Glasgow last week as well as another, which has yet to be found.

Police Scotland and the Metropolitan police said in a joint statement that the claim was received on Monday by a media organisation in Northern Ireland using a recognised codeword.

They said: “Those claiming responsibility have indicated five devices were sent. At this time, only four devices have been recovered.

“Extensive advice has already been issued to relevant businesses and sectors to be vigilant for and report suspicious packages to police. This advice was previously sent to armed forces personnel and is being reiterated again in light of this claim.

“We continue to urge the public to remain vigilant and report anything suspicious to police.”

The forces said that even before receipt of the claim of responsibility they were exploring the possibility of IRA involvement, as the packages bore similarities to devices sent in the past linked to dissident groups associated with Northern Ireland-related terrorism. No arrests have been made.

Detectives from the Met’s counter-terrorism command are leading the investigation into the three packages received in London on Tuesday last week, while Police Scotland are leading the investigation into the package received at the University of Glasgow last Wednesday.

No, more likely because a resurgent IRA might be reasonably linked to the current Brexit fiasco, more than one Irish politician has raised stated concern over such things. Will of the people and all that, no news here.
