There's some mice in my kitchen what am i gonna do?
« on: July 13, 2017, 08:25:17 am »
over the past couple of years we've been in denial about encroaching mice coming in from the garden.

it would seem the little swine have colonised somewhere under the floorboards on the ground floor.

last night i came into the kitchen to find one of them sitting in a frying pan on the cooker.

further investigation revealed droppings behind the cooker where we keep the olive oil etc.

when i go online for remedies to this situation i'm bombarded with big brand selling advice.

can RAWK give me a steer on a DIY solution?

do i need to get some sonic deterrent?

which traps work best?

i don't want dying mice under the floor boards to stink out the house.

all useful advice welcome.

Went throught the whole 'don't want to kill them' thing a few years ago when we had mice. Used live traps, the little twats just ate the bait of them without setting them off. Called the council in the end who just put poison down, that did it. Didn't see or smell any dying mice. The lad from the council said the whole terrace had them, even if you catch a couple, you'll just get the neighbour's.

You could scatter them less randomly and map their location on a chart in the kitchen so the kids know where to tread #compromise

I had a similar experience and the poisoned bait worked.  We had a bit of a smell for a bit, but it soon cleared up.  We had to put a lot down because the mice seem to be random with feeding habits.

We aren't walking through the storm now - we are the storm.

I tried the humane trap in my Mums, she kept knocking it and triggering the trap, one day I opened it thinking she'd done it again and a very sweaty mouse came flying out. In the end I used a proper trap and monster munch. I had to build a little passageway as the first time the mouse got the bait without setting it off. Next time, one squashed mouse.

Get mice on a regular basis thanks to my cat. Brings them in but tortures them rather than kill them, a complete sadist.

I've found humane mouse traps are the way to go. You just need to be careful setting them up and strategic in terms of where you put them - they seem to only walk along the very edge of a room, so put them in corners and other little nooks they might fit into.

Also, I use parmesan rather than regular cheddar or whatever. It was the only thing I had in the house one day and seemed to work far better than anything else.

Yes, they stick to the egdes and will have a regular route - usually you can see little mouse turds to help you find them.

Bait the traps with milk chocolate.

Also from experience, they love prawn cocktail flavoured crisps. They targeted them in a Walkers Classic multipack we had. And don't use the sticky pad traps. They'll just chew their leg off and leave it stuck to it with a bunch of helpless spiders.

I had mice in my Kitchen and thats the trap I bought. stuck a chocolate button to the end and ended up catching 3 of them in the end.

Haven't seen any more for ages but still have the trap setup just encase.

Peanut butter has worked best for me the couple of times I've had mice. Their food of choice is nuts/grains/seeds and the oiliness of the butter makes the smell stronger. Stick a big peanut in it so the little fucker tries to dig it out. Top tip: wrap some cotton or dental floss over the bait so the mouse has to chew through. If the bastard gets through that and steals the bait without springing the trap it probably deserves to live TBF.

Plenty of good traps on amazon. Victor clean kill traps (grey tunnel) are prolific.

We keep our traps outside but nutella is our bait of choice. For the ones who taunt us we treat them to parma ham and the next morning theyre in the trap.
