Right, 3g one it is....they better not fuckin release a colour e-ink one any time soon

Color e-ink is years away, they probably will release an LCD iPad like device this fall though.

Just back from my first holiday using with a Kindle. Absolutely made up with it - only charged the battery once in 3 weeks, despite using it for 2-3 hours a day. Screen was crystal clear, even in the blazing sun.

For anyone wavering, 100% recommend!

As someone else said, this will be for an Amazon iPad rival - not a colour Kindle.

I fancy one of these. Go away quite a bit so thinking of getting the 3G version. Let me get this right. Its just the one off payment and you get unlimited 3G in most countries? Also any ideas where to find them cheapest?  ;)

Correct. One off payment and access to 3G in a number of countries.

I don't think you'll really get them much cheaper than direct with Amazon. Probably worth paying it anyway due to the excellent Customer Service you get  from them as I, and a few others on this thread, can vouch for.

I downloaded it for my PC recently, simply because I needed a reading fix and I've no books here.
If I was to get the Kindle in future, as I've decided I want one, is it easy to transfer between PC and device?

If the books on the PC Kindle are downloaded from Amazon, you should be able to get them directly from Amazon over WiFi or 3G on any new Kindle device as they will be in the archived files. Note that you can have multiple Kindles registered to the same amazon account, so you can share books that way.

Drag and drop

It's easier than drag and drop, you can just go to "Archived Items" in the Kindle and redownload them and they'll sync the location of where you last read.

I'm not sure if the folders are just represented on the Kindle or you can see them on the PC when you're hooked up on the USB.

The handling of a large library on a Kindle is terrible, and is my biggest gripe with the device.

You can tag books as being part of a "Collection", but that is it. Books can be tagged in multiple collections but you cannot nest collections.

There is no straight forward way of listing all authors and then selecting one and then choosing one of their books to read. The only way seems to be to add a collection using the author's name, and then tagging his books. When you choose to display collections on the Kindle, they are not sorted alphabetically.

Yes, but if you have 1000 books on it, that is 100 pages to potentially page through to get to a particular author as it doesn't collapse by author.

If you press a letter key, you can jump to authors starting with that letter. I have about 3,000 books on my Kindle, and Author Searches are one of the less frustrating bits. I would love to be able to convert tags in calibre to collections. So I could set up all of the collections in Calibre. I have given up on collections - I lost all the collections data when I got a warranty replacement.

Take a look at this forum http://bolt.cd/board/19/ebooks

There's quite a lot on there in various formats. Use Calibre to convert them to whatever other format you want.

It is very bad indeed. Peer to peer sharing is very public. Usenet is far more discreet.

I've recently been removing books from my kindle as I was finding it difficult to locate the book I wanted to read.

Thanks. It looks as if pressing a letter only works if you are displaying by Author, and not Collections or most recent first. In those cases, it ends up just doing a search on the Kindle which can take an age with lots of books.

My other big issue is not being able to specify the order of books in series', so I have been changing the title in Calibre to identify the order

I have been using the Kindle Collection manager on PC (http://www.colegate.net/KindleCollectionManager/), but there appears to be a new Collection Plugin for Calibre. To install, go to Calibre->Preferences->Plugins->Get New Plugins and select Kindle Collections. Full instructions on how to use it are on http://www.mobileread.com/forums/showthread.php?t=118635

This new plugin seems to work quite well. I have deleted all my collections and got the Calibre plugin to create collections based on Author Sort. Unfortunately, the collections, while they start off in alphabetical order, reorder as you read books from a particular collection.
