I think Chelsea are more like us nowadays than they are Man City. Obviously Roman might change his approach, but they actually seem to have taken FFP on board plus he has all of his legal issues.

Nah, they’ve fudged it over most of the last 4 or 5 years by buying hundreds of players before FFP came in so they could sell them and drip feed the money back into the club.

I’d question the size of a few of their sales too.

So you are against the little clubs having a chance against the big ones. Sounds very conservative to me.
The smaller clubs can compete at the top by building themselves up organically with smart decision making. Leicester won the league, Tottenham Hotspur went from floating around in the top half and are an established top 4 club at this point, and then there are teams like Watford who are clearly on the up. It's not quick and it's not easy but it can be done. Last thing the league needs is another Man City. Especially it being Newcastle, the fans are unbearable at the best of times, imagine them in City's position.

Well out of the top 6 I'd say us, Arsenal and spurs are more likely to suffer than the other 3. Who can easily outspend us. We've spent the money well recently but in terms of spending power, we're not top of the list.

To clarify my point, City is already owned, as are Chelsea,  although they are fading. Interest in our club has been rebuffed by FSG. United are a mess, and Arsenal's ownership is in lockdown, as seemingly Spurs are.

I think we're better placed simply because of how well we're run. But anymore oil clubs barging in will make it difficult for everyone.

As long as they don't cheat FFP like city then whatever bring it on. Still think it's getting a little ridiculous.

I posted a thread on here about 6 months ago about my dwindling interest in professional football and how I find it hard to relate to it anymore. I still take a big interest in Liverpool and will always hope that we do well, but I've definitely become disillusioned by it all in recent years. It's my understanding that the guy who's interested in buying Newcastle is a first cousin of the Sheik who (supposedly) "owns" Man City. When that much wealth comes into the equation, then I wouldn't hold out much hope for football in the long run. 10 years from now half of the league could well be under Arab ownership.

Newcastle are just the next takeover in what will probably turn out to be a splurge of takeovers. It's sad to see a sport go from being such a beacon of community and socialism, to being a runaway train of gross commercialism and downright greed. I've always respected Newcastle as a "club", but if they go down the same path as City then I can't see myself seeing them as a "club" anymore. And that goes for all other clubs too, including us

How much money are they really going to be able to throw at transfers and wages? Its not like it was when Abramovich came in at Chelsea or even when the Arabs came in at City.  Yes they have more money coming in now due to tv deals, but there are also more eyes trying to enforce FFP. No way will a team like Newcastle, with new money, will get away with spunking 80m on a player. They might get 100-120m to spend, but there are plenty of smaller PL teams spent near that without sugar daddies.

The City FFP situation might not lead to a sugar daddy situation.

All I see is long term reasonable funding rather than a 200 million warchest every transfer window.

Surely it'll just be the same shit as City, bent commercial payments via 'associations' and affiliates vs a direct payment from the club.  FFP is only of note to the clubs who don't want to spend a fortune creating an elaborate system of circumventing it - see Pep at Bayern and how part of his contract included getting 'preferential' personal sponsorships from Bayern's sponsors.

I imagine it'll be a mix of the two.

Not as big and obvious spending as City, but they'll probably also fudge a few deals to get some additional money into the club quickly.

Surely the big dog Sheik at City won't be too happy if Newcastle come in and start nicking players they're after.

Looks like Cockney Mike might be dealing with the actual organ-grinder this time around.

I'm actually wanting this to happen, if only to piss on City's chips.  On the other hand it worries me that that this particular Geordie Sheik is Mansoor's relative.

It's the sponsorship deals. Suddenly Newcastle will be earning more in sponsorship than most of the top 6. City has given the blueprint and shown how there are few repercussions.  They could also take most of their spending off the books.  Paying £100k wages p/w to players on paper but channelling money to them elsewhere.

Geordies will be happy about this just as we would've been if we'd been saved from H&G by oil money. Benitez with a transfer budget is all Newcastle need to be competing for Europe and cups.

I'd say by the time we get to that last point City will be well established as a multi-time league winner and will have the credibility that they just didn't have when they were taken over which will let them attract the very top tier of talent.  Newcastle is more complicated and will take a good half decade to get towards that, if not longer.  It's complicated more because unlike City and Chelsea I love Newcastle's fans, they have a fantastic stadium and plenty of history to draw from, as well as the team being linked to the fans and area in a way few sides manage, a little like Liverpool in that respect.  In a way they're a perfect take-over prospect, you're buying that instant credibility with the stadium infrastructure in place, a top manager already bound to the project and just need to focus on improving the sporting side as you fiddle the commercial revenues to enable that.

Be interesting for sure to see how it works out. As far as I knew the same 'owner' couldn't own two clubs in the PL because of the likely conflicting interests. Seeing that they're related (aren't they?) how is Geordie Sheik going to distance himself from Manc Sheik when it comes to demonstrating that he's 'fit and proper' and operating a totally independent set up to other family members? And what's in it for the Manc Sheiks to let junior loose with a club in the same division?

this is it  though, i can see it being strategically coordinated, its not like they have an interest in football is it? so if one loses out so what? as long a one of them wins,  the more horses you have in the race the more likely you are to win.

Watched the match in Toon last night. Crows Nest & The Hotspur (I know tempting fate a bit). Good number of both Reds & Spurs fans mixing with no trouble at all. The locals though were vociferously behind Spurs. I've no problem with that, but some of them were overstepping the mark and clearly looking for a bit of bother with us Reds. Hence the reason for switching bars at half time. Don't know why we're such a source of aggravation to them at present, but they're really looking to stoke up a rivalry. Fuck em, add them to the list.

And to the gent who could do no more than tediously shout 'Sad Mackam Bastard' at Henderson every time he was on screen, he was the one lifting the CL Trophy you soft twat. How sad is that?!

They have the stadium, the fanbase and the manager to be an attractive investment. With Chelsea may well being in terminal decline as the walls are closing in on Roman, transfer bans etc, there's potentially a European spot to be had. Anyway, it's not like foreign star players are going to queue up to move to Tyneside when they're already in say Milan. Getting players to move to Cheshire and play for Manchester City and in the same city as United was always going to be easier.
