Atletico Madrid - Volcanic ash flight restriction updates
« on: April 17, 2010, 11:30:00 am »
Due to the UEFA rule where away clubs must be in the country of the match at least 24 hours before kick-off there is major risk of the game not going ahead as planned as there are no flights out of the UK until Monday afternoon at the earliest.

As the volcano in Iceland is spewing ash out this morning at a greater rate than when it errupted last Thursday, coinciding with the wind which is currently north westerly the UK is poised for an extension on the  ' no fly zone '  add on the issue of flight crews and aircraft currently not being in the correct locations our game in Madrid is in serious risk.    :(

As the home game is planned 7 days later this will be the contingency to play at the Vincente Caulderon with a postponement of the home game for 7 further days.

This might be a bonus to us as Torres is doubtful for 22nd April

the UEFA regulation or rule has been in place for donkeys years,  dont you remember the issue in 2005 when Liverpool FC had to stay in North Wales when we played TNS at Racecourse Ground Wrexham,  the info regarding wind direction is via Met Office and flight info from NATS

Where did you get that info from?

The restrictions are in place until 1am tomorrow morning, with an update due later today.

Last time we played Atleti there was the big thing about them playing behind closed doors, now a fucking volcano threatens the game.

When will we be able to book a trip to Atleti away and not worry?

my flights booked , sp hope theres no problems , already had to cancel ticket application for Chelsea home because (happily) we have the home game v atleti on the thursday (?) ..what with climatic disasters, sky tv and etc it seems like this season, beach balls and injuries , we need some witch doctor  to lift this "curse"...;)

sensible response at last,

doesnt look good at the moment with the ash continuing,  the wind direction and the air space ban,  its currently until tomorrow afternoon as ive been corrected earlier but Ryanair has cancelled flights until Monday 13:00hrs but it doesnt take anybody with brain cells to see this is likely to be extended into mid week and beyond

The only problem we face is the airspace being crowded, we'll have our own charter anyway, so not like we are gonna be scrambling for seats.

Fans getting there might have an issue though, as Madrid is popular as it is, so going to be a huge backlog of people needing to travel I would assume.

one of the issues that nobody has picked up on is where their designated aircraft is and where the flight crews are,  thats additional disruption / delays whe the air space is opened

an open air space on Monday nmorning will still have knock on effects on Wednesday morning,  Ryanair are not flying until Monday 13:00hrs,   hence my initial post which ive been lambasted for

Nobody knows what will happen, hence the periodic updates reporting on a changing situation. It's force of nature at work.

And just to repeat - the ban on flights is until 1am tomorrow morning (sunday) at the earliest. You're best relaxing until those with braincells AND satellite data can make an informed decision.

IF the winds continue to blow at the current speeds AND direction, I would be very comfortable in saying the flights will be re-instated as planned on Monday or Tuesday at the very latest...the ash is moving as expected in the direction and headings as forcasted.

Match looks to be on.

You've also got to remember its not just our team getting there if we go by charter. It is the UEFA officials, match officials, corporates, fans etc etc. Inter are supposed to be playing Barca on Tuesday, there is more chance of that being cancelled as can't see them going by coach or train, Munich and Lyon arent close and cant see Fulham sailing to Hamburg so I wonder whether they will scrap all of this weeks fixtures and put them all back by a week. If the games do go ahead thousands and thousands of fans will not be able to attend due to the flight backlogs.
Let's also never forget the 39!

I work in the travel industry and inside word is that although people reckon that flights may be leaving as of tomorrow, travel is more than likely to be suspsended until around tuesday/wednesday, this is not a definiate but just an estimation!

Exactly! Due to the nature (pardon the pun) of the event there's nothing we can do, we'll just have to accept whatever happens. At one point reports were coming out about the cloud which were making me fear for my holiday to Cyprus in 3 months time, then I realised there's nothing I can do and whatever happens happens.

If this is to be postponed, are they more than likely have the supposedly second leg at Anfield to be the first??? . . . Then the following week ,play the second leg at The Vicente???? . . . . This could cause a right balls up!!!!
