The boss with three captains of the club, all holding trophies.  :)

Four actually, although Redknapp is only just in shot without a trophy

I think Wednesday will be the moment when not having fans in for us is the saddest as it would've been a great opportunity for us to pay tribute as a fanbase (e.g. bringing back the GH mosaic). That said, I don't think it needs to be said really how grateful we all are to him and how much he means to the club. If you made a list of a dozen or so people who've had the most influence on the club as a whole, he makes it.

Very sad news. Always remember him as the manager for my first ever Liverpool game and gave players like Gerrard a chance in the first team.

Very sad news about Gerard Houllier. Have to admit when he came in as joint manager in 1998 with Roy Evans I hadn't ever heard of him. In the summer of 1999 he set about rebuilding the playing squad having made sole manager back in Nov of 1998. He made cracking signings that summer including Henchoz, Hyppia, Hamann and Smicer. He signed 7 of the starting lineup that won the ECL in 2005. He played an instrumental part in guiding the careers of two more in the shape of Carragher and Gerrard. His signing of Gary McAllister at 36 in 2000 from Coventry was a masterstroke. Undoubtedly his best years were 1999-2001.
He was our first foreign manager ever and first with no previous connection to the club. He modernised the club in the way that Souness intended. He cut out the spice boy nonsense and made us a serious football side again. His treble cup winning season of 2000-01 cemented his place in the pantheon's of Liverpool great managers joined laterally by Rafa and Jurgen.
Many have spoken of him today as a classy gentleman and he was that indeed. However like all successful and great managers he was ruthless. He shipped out McAteer, Ince and James early on. He put his own Westerveld out to graze in favour of Dudek. His signings from 2002 on were generally poor and this was reflected in the lack of relative success.
His willingness to come back after major heart surgery was remarkable and a testament to his strength and determination. His love for the club and city could never be questioned.
He gave me my most memorable times following Liverpool since Kenny's first period in charge. Merci beaucoup for everything Gerard and may he Rest In Peace.

I started watching Liverpool with Roy Evans in charge.
I first experienced what it was for your club to win, with Gerard Houllier.
He truly did lead us into becoming the modern LFC...

He was the man who modernised LFC and laid the pre ground work for Istanbul

Agreed.

He took us forward and out of the old era. We had been very successful but times had moved on and we needed to transform the club.

Made a huge impact by revolutionising the whole club and made the fans dream again. Risked his life for the club and not many managers in world football have done that.

I've found myself quite upset about this today. I've just turned 30 and whilst I have the vaguest memories of pre-Houllier Liverpool, it was Ged who was my first manager, y'know? 73 is no age but it makes me feel my age as well, it's a very strange feeling. Mortality, eh?

A lovely, lovely man who brought me a lot of wonderful childhood memories. I hope he rests well.

Jesse Marsch tearing up  :'(

Houllier gave him his break at Salzburg.

https://mobile.twitter.com/FCRBS_en/status/1338487558867738627

Aww, I was tearing up a little at that. It's a measure of his stature and how far he managed to reach throughout the game, all over the world. Hearing and reading the number of people from all around the game talk about him today, shows how widely respected and loved he was.

Been texting the lads all day about the great memories we have of 2001...the night of the Alaves final we where in a hotel in Dusseldorf about 25 of us...the young barman said he would keep bar open late if wanted...think he regretted that offer when some of us where still going at 8am...but we had a whip round for him and he was happy.

Around 4am we asked for some music...he searched around and said he could only find two CDs...The Beatles Red and Blue Albums... For next two hours we sang along happy as could be....tears in my eyes recalling the joy of the night.

Thanks Ged.

If anyone was ever in any doubt as to his skills not only as a manager but also as a human then we need look no further than what he did for the career of a certain Steven Gerrard. Rafa might have fine tuned the engine to perfection but Houllier built the machine, on and off the pitch.

That there has been such an outpouring of warmth and fondness today shows how highly he was regarded in the modern game, and he leaves a fine legacy, not just from his time at LFC but also with France and even the women's game. But I'll never forget the treble, the night against Roma and when he was laughing his arse off at Goodison. Thanks Gerard, repose en paix

If my assistant had not signalled a goal, I would have given a penalty and sent off goalkeeper Patr Cheh. he beeped me to signal the foul. The noise from the crowd  stopped me hearing it, I have been involved at places like Barcelona, Ibrox, Old Trafford, Arsenal, but I've never in my life been involved in such an atmosphere. 2 interesting tidbits I learned

As we were back in the Champions League, Liverpool had to make a number of changes to their ground and protocols including access to an ambulance and having a full time club doctor (Mark Waller was only working at the club on a part time basis before). This allowed him.to be diagnosed and transferred to hospital quickly.

Also the same surgeon that operated on him back in 2001 also operated on my grandad 5 years earlier. Abbas Rashid went on to become a world renowned heart surgeon and retired in 2010.
