imagine how much ammo sky's "best league in the world" would have if they didnt
Well we could have 3 semi-finalists every year for 10 years but the real mark of greatness for me is actually winning it. Two winners and one runner up since the end of the ban 16 years ago says it all really.

And just in case anyone wants to jump down my throat and say history plays no part in all this. I will tell you right now history tells me everything.

Liverpool have always been a team of controlling football matches. They have done it ever since I have been watching football for 35 years.

Man U have always had this cavalier attitude to winning matches. They have had it since as long as I can remember. Every now and again when they get it right they can get lucky. But luck does not last. Against Itialian teams you need more than luck.

Liverpool control 8 V Man U cavalier 3

I agree totally and have said exactly the same thing on more than a few ocasions. Utd have stuggled in Europe and are only in the quarters because they had the easiest draw against Lille.

I still get wound up thinking back to the Utd win over Bayern and the nonsense that was spoken about them getting a win over a German team... when Liverpool beat German teams for fun including a couple of finals and a semi against BMG - the 73 UEFA Cup win saw wins over Frankfurt, Dresden, Berlin on the way.

Utd will struggle against Roma.

I was there too and it still turns my stomach to this day - can you imagine that magnification of that if we lost a European Cup Final to them? In Athens!?!

I am going to be positive but if we did come up against them in the final (should we be lucky enough to get there) then I would be in bits mate. An absolute mess.

You're not wrong mate. Wouldn't be a final for the feint hearted that's for sure. Just thinking about the prospect gives me butterflies.

Happy with that draw.

Don't know if anyone feels the same, but I am really confident we will get to Athens.

Plus I don't believe Fergie will play the cavalier stuff against Roma/AC/Bayern either.

They have nothing else. How are you going to ask Ron, Roo, Giggs and Scholes to play a controlling game?

Not only that, have noticed certainly in recent times, Man U's style of football has been found out and neutralized against Italian sides up to this point. Perfectly content with them being drawn in the same half of the draw as 2 Italian sides...

The only one of those players that would struggle to play in a more disciplined and defensive manner would be Ronaldo. You regularly see the other three doing their bit for the team. I am not sticking up for them here by the way - I just don't go with unfounded suggestions that they can't play defensively. Along with Chelsea they have conceded the least league goals this season. One less than us.

I can't believe how confident everyone is about the mancs. I reckon both them and Chelsea are going out.

I agree, especially the mancs.

I would argue that they don't play defensively. There offense is their defense and it works out quite well most of the time. However, against Italian teams I don't beleive it will work.

They have comfortably scored the most goals in the league and conceded the least (jointly with Chelsea). They don't play defensively style wise but to say that they can't play defensively and depend on their attacking style to keep goals out at the other end is just plain naive.

The only team in the prem that plays close to an Italian game is us. The first game at OT was an offgame because we have had a few.

The game at our place however is exactly how both games against Roma will be played. We made all their top players look ordinary and Roma will attempt to do the same. Thats what controlling teams do. They/We don't allow these players to play. Man U should have been beaten by us but they got lucky. You can't ride that luck in every game against the best teams in Europe. Thats why we where not lucky (as some people have suggested) when we won in 2005.

Man U will notdo that against Roma because they don't know how to.

I appreciate the point you are making but my point stands. United can defend more than capably and trying to control them could be well outside of Roma's remit. I hope it isn't but I fear it is.

I would be amazed if (and yes it is an if) AC beat Bayern that Man U could beat 2 Italian sides to reach a final. History says they can't do it. I say they can't do it too.

I would almost agree with that but I think the AC / Bayern could go either way.

On our side Valencia will be very tricky but it will give Mr Villa a chance to soak up the Anfield crowd before Rafa snaps him up :P I think we can get to the final and will play Roma :)

And we all know what happens when we play them in the final :)

Yeah I mean all the ties could go either way if we're being honest. What I saw of Milan the other night, they weren't exactly on fire and Bayern looked pretty good but everybody seems to be jumping on the Bayern bandwagon off the back off a few good results and Hitzfeld's return. Plus David Platt has tipped them so that's enough to get me rooting for the Italians. At the end of the day one team has Kaka and the other has Owen Hargreaves so for those reasons I am going to go with the pedigree.

Just posted this in the other Main thread... maybe its more suited here...

Chelsea play Valencia... UEFA have yet to dish out punishment to Valencia for all the fighting by their players on the pitch in the last round. Will Valencia just get a slap on the wrist and a fine, or could Valencia get kicked out? Was it Feyenoord who were kicked out of the UEFA Cup for a minority of their fans having a fight in France? Will we see consistancy from UEFA or more inconsistant decision making?!

Yes, but isnt it worse when the players fight?!

It is but Feyenoord had been in trouble many times before over the behaviour of their fans and been warned and fined on numerous occasions which is why UEFA leaned to a stricter disciplinary measure in their case.

Inter will be in the most trouble of the two sides because of their track record and that of their fans.

I said in another thread a couple of days ago. Liverpool V Man U final is a match that defeat to either side would be more than every thing else that has ever happened in eithers history ever. It will not be 6-2 or 5-3 it will be always be no matter who win as 1-0 until the next final. And that could be a very, very long time.

If it happens is happens! I still fancy our chances. There would however be no song of how we won it in Athens, Greece six times. The songs would be much more fun than that :)

Will anyone else apart from David Navarro be punished after that kerfuffle against Inter?

Nando helped to knock Chelsea out for Monaco in '04 and was with us when we knocked them out in '05 - heres hoping he can be our lucky charm again.

Sadly, I suspect Chelsea and United will both go through.

last 4 liverpool valencia manu, an a stab in the dark bayern.

i think the mancs have the best draw, ok psv are probably the weakest side left but if we beat the dutch we are going to face a deffo strong side in the semi,  if terrys out less so if chelsea get through.
who said italian sides had done well v the mancs??

the last time they won it they beat 2 italian sides in the quarters an semi ffs, an could happen again.
cant remember the last italian side to knock them out, would have been juve im guessing.
mr sort of worried/cautious me on this draw.

My last 4 are Valencia, Liverpool, Man Utd and Bayern.

Final of Liverpool v Man Utd.

Ill predict a 2-1 Liverpool win...Kuyt and Gerrard with a Rooney goal....with us hanging on like fuck for the 20 minutes!!

Athens will be utter fucking chaos

I'm all for predictions but can we calm down just a tad? It's all very exciting but the quarter finals are next, not the semis, and not the final.
