Buveur D'air, the dual Champion Hurdle winner who fell when attempting a third win in that race eight months ago, also missed out in making it a third victory in this event, despite giving his all. Things appeared to be going to plan with Barry Geraghty content to allow the winner plenty of rope down the back when travelling well, but it soon became apparent entering the home straight there was work to do. A mistake at the second last then cost him any momentum he'd built, and, while it would be harsh to knock this admirable individual, this was yet another odds-on defeat, leading layers to pushing his price out to 8-1 for the Champion Hurdle. The vet reported the gelding finished lame on his right fore.
Buveur D'air picked up a little cut on his coronary band, just between the hoof and the hair. I was happy through the race and thought I'd win jumping the last, but he just struggled in the last 100 yards. It's disappointing to be beaten, but the winner was good, he did it the hard way. I thought we'd come and beat him and we couldn't - Barry Geraghty, jockey.
