Didn't see one for this year.

First big release of the year for me is from Marika Hackman who released her new album yesterday.

Timely. Popped into town for the first time this year today in order to pick up a couple of new albums - Marika Hackman's latest (her fourth), Bill Ryder-Jones' new one, and (current UK #1!) the latest one by Shed Seven.

I am making a concerted effort to get back on the saddle in 2024 - used to love discovering new music prior to the pandemic, but working from home took a big chunk of my usual listening time out of the equation.

Here are a few good releases that I have heard up to now…

Gustaf - Starting and Staring

New York five piece who have supported the likes of Idles and Yard Act over the last couple of years. This is the first single from their new album which is out in early May. Suspect this will be a breakthrough year for them.

https://youtu.be/lAv-mu9RTrc?si=Hrdue09tHUjjesl5

Waxahatchee - Right Back to It

Not someone who I was familiar with until this week when this single dropped, but this is a gorgeous track and has me very much looking forward to her new album (which will be out on 22nd March).

https://youtu.be/YL3iHhERWJw?si=PWd7OUqRxx9YlTUH

Helado Negro - Best For You and Me

Another one who I had never given the time of the day until this past week, although I had been recommended him before and had just ignored the advice. Big mistake. Huge. If this track is anything to go by, his new album (released 9th February) should be worth a listen.

The new Bill Ryder Jones album is very good.  Reminds me in parts of Mercury Rev’s Deserter’s Songs.

Looking forward to the Waxahatchee album her last one was a cracker.

150+ tracks on my 2024 Playlist so far in case anyone's interested. Gratefully added Gustafo and Helado Negro based on ljycb's recommendation. Haven't listened to all of these yet, but its shaping up nicely.

Originally broke up in 2003, before a partial reunion as a touring band from 2007. Released an album of new music in 2017, and have followed it up with this new one.

They were one of my favourites as a kid with an ear for the mid 90s guitar bands, so I've loved being able to see them a handful of times during recent years. The singles for the new album (I've not listened to it yet) didn't grab me as much as the 2017 album, but I'm glad they're having a bit of a moment. Even if Rick is a Yorkshire Manc ;D

I'm expecting more from 24 than 23, John Bramwell, Black Keys, Gemma Hayes, Pearl Jam, Michael Stipe, Shins, U2, Faye Webster, Brittany Howard, Cure, Black Crowes, Springsteen, Sleater-Kinney, Nadine Shah, Sia already looks more promising than last year (although it's almost always not as good as you anticipate)

I like the three tracks I've heard so far from the forthcoming Cast album, the title track in particular - Love Is The Call. Strange, cos I was never much into them back in the day, always felt they were a bit too polished, preferred the more low-fi sound of the La's. Maybe I've just gone soft now, being that bit older.

https://youtu.be/EsmDiNNWQI0?si=LLQ-YQ12R49P3-w1

As things stand, what I'm most looking forward to this year are the promised new albums from Warmduscher, Jane Weaver, Katy J Pearson and Fat White Family. (Assuming they all come out this year - Warmduscher and KJP haven't recorded yet so might even be next year.)

Already got tickets to see Jane Weaver in May. But before that, first gig of the year will be English Teacher at the start of Feb. Should be good.

I am also on the Bill Ryder-Jones train.

But mainly listening to Jorge Ben at the moment so I'm only 50 years out of date.

Will check out the Waxahatchee as quite liked previous stuff.

Helado Negro going to be good too.

As ever, if you can be arsed putting the effort in, there'll be some good stuff this year.

Good to have Red In Korea back too! Although sorry I'm not going to open Spotify for that playlist, though I am tempted...

Sleater-Kinney's new record, Little Rope is out this Friday - their fourth since reforming. Really like the sound of the singles that have preceded it:

Also going to pick up Saviours - the new one from Green Day (also out this Friday). I often approach post-00s Green Day releases with a sense of trepidation, but this seems to have had some decent reviews.

Really enjoying the new Green Day album. A proper return to form. Not quite on the same level as a Dookie or American Idiot, but for a bunch of dudes in their 50s who looked in 2020 like they were sleepwalking towards the end of their career, it's a very decent resurgence. Potentially a top 5 album from them.

The Smile’s new album Wall Of Eyes is an absolute stunner, I thought A Light For Attracting Attention was good, albeit a bit patchy.  New one is fantastic all the way through.

My sister went to see their film thing and they were selling the album before the official release on both digital and cassette.  Think I’m going for the vinyl though.

2024 could be the year Bodega finally break big. Having said that, their new single is about Tarkovsky's Stalker:

On the downtempo/chilled tip, a band called 100 Poems have released an album called "Everything's Balearic When You Believe"

https://100poems.bandcamp.com/album/everythings-balearic-when-you-believe-2

Described as - "Electronic, house, psych, prog, blues, downtempo, dub, sundowners, balearic and blissed out beats."

It's ace.

A few new ones doing the rounds from Bill Ryder-Jones, Lucy Rose, and Sleater-Kinney, who all have new records due in the early months of 2024.

One of the 'rocker' Sleater-Kinney records, this - enjoying it. Corin Tucker's vocals are fantastic on it, and some of the guitar interplay is at least as good as anything they've done since reforming.

Big fan of the opening and closing songs - 'Hell' (above) and 'Untidy Creature', respectively - in particular.

New Sleater-Kinney is a very good, cohesive album. Also liking the new Weaver track further up above, so looking forward to her album as well, as always. Also looking forward to new Les Big Byrd, Jesus & Mary Chain, Mdou Moctar and MGMT albums, all should be in the next few months... and maybe, just maybe, after ten years it might look like Sky Ferreira might finally follow up with her second album after sort of sorting out some nasty label business.

Saw English Teacher tonight. They played a few new ones off the album that’s coming out in April. I’m pretty confident right now that it’s going to be in my top five for the year. Wonderful. Have to admit I’m slightly smitten with Lily Fontaine. Great voice. Great stage presence. The whole band come across as really decent people too.

I saw these support Yeah Yeah Yeahs at the Apollo in 2022 and was impressed with them then - liked a couple of bits I've heard on the radio since, and had a listen to a few bits on YouTube last night. The stage presence thing is spot on for me, particularly considering I'm thinking back eighteen months and so a large venue. Looking forward to hearing more.

The 6music thing was in Hull. I saw them the next night in Margate. They've been doing the rounds this week as official ambassadors for Independent Venue Week. WhereElse in Margate is a great venue - capacity about 150, if that, and it was absolutely rammed last night.

I liked the acoustic set but the full band is better. And like all the best bands, the songs sound better live than on record.

Gruff Rhys album is a great - whole family enjoying it.

Listened to the first 2 tracks released from the new Julia Holter album coming in March. Sounds like it going to be brilliant. Back to synths front and centre.
