Bought one of these bad boys about a month back. Definitely worth the price tag. Great sound, very portable. $300.

50 quid, pick it up, if its in good nick, could be useful someday. I think Cobain played one in the early days of Nirvana.
Looks like Cobains was a Mosrite.

Hi all. Now im back in the gadget scene. Im gonna buy the GT100 effects pedal but i also want a home recording studio etc. The Gt is about £400 so ill budget 6-800 for a recording studio. Any recommendations for an all in one unit? With a dvd/cd burner on board etc.

In the market for a new amp for up to 400 quid.. Christ it's hard to find anything. There was a beauty of a Marshall JVM 210C on ebay for about 300 before some fucker outbid me by 200 at the last minute. Still an amazing deal even if he did drive the price up something massive.. then I was put off a nice Vox AD50VT modelling amp for 120 on ebay again because of postage costs.

Being self-taught is a bit of a bitch, technically I'm pretty good (as far as playing dexterous pieces is concerned) but I can't wrap my head around theory and no matter how many videos I pour myself into trying to get around it it seems like too much is put into too little time, or an instructor starts something simple and suddenly brings in the most obscure sub-elements of it before you even understand the basic concept. I know a load of scales in terms of being able to play them - applying them, understanding what a mode is or what they're for, I have no clue about that. Plus I can see myself a few properly bad flaws in my technique, fretting bends etc. If there were a good teacher round where I live I'd be all over that but the only bloke who did it had a bit of success in his band and has fecked off to Germany. I'm a lefty though so it's hard to find anyone who isn't frustrated with teaching a left handed guitarist, and some just flat out won't take them.

After something for gigging or practice in the house?

How about a Vox AC15 or Orange Tiny Terror, maybe a Laney VC50 if you need something with a bit more poke?

All of the above should come in at well within your budget and they're tube. Some of these modelling amps are a mixed bag although I do have an AD50VT here which is half decent.

Now that you mention it there's a Vox AC15 going online for 340 euro, very close to me. Have you any experience with them? They sound pretty good to me from what I can gather online, but online it's hard to know really..

It's for gigging btw. Marshall, Orange and Blackstar were the 3 amp brands recommended to me the day I first got a guitar but it's hard to find anywhere to get a blackstar and orange tend to be pretty pricey online. Thanks.

Has to be fender, amps wise for me. My mates fender twin is late 60s and sounds superb. Use pedals for gain channel anyway, so for me it's all about that fender clean tone and then rat or other overdrive for louder stuff, which is pretty rare these days, mainly just use tuner tremolo and delay pedals wise now.

I'm also left handed tony, pain isn't it. I've got 2 electrics, an epiphone casino which is great sounding despite the pickups being rusty as hell, although the g string on epiphones never seems to stay in tune, had other guitars by them in the past and same problem. My main guitar is a reverend jet stream which is kind of a jaguar inspired shape but without the mad loads of controls. Lovely guitar, excellent brand if you come across one and they did tons of left handed models.

I'm also lucky in that a band I play drums in has a left handed guitarist with a lovely fender strat , and the other band I drum for has a left handed bass player so I get to try other stuff too which is brilliant.

The AC15C1 is a nice amp, I borrowed one for a while after my TSL blew up... it's got a lovely clean tone that lends itself well to adding a bit of subtle overdrive (a la tube screamer) for bluesy stuff. Looking at your guitar I'm guessing you might be after something that shifts a bit more air though.

Fender is a good shout there. Been looking at trying a DeVille out, they're about 800 sheets new so I'm not sure that a used one would be within your budget. Not tried Blackstar amps with them being related to Marshall who I have now officially washed my hands of after a couple of bad experiences.

It's a pain for sure, the worst part is the common mantra espoused by everyone when buying guitars that you have to try before you buy. Well I held true to that for my first guitar, bought in a dingy guitar shop, where the only lefty there was some no-name strat knockoff that they didn't have to have clean or well set up in any way because no one would buy it, in fact it was probably there as the token left handed guitar which had been hanging up for years, such was the dust the thing gathered. I got it anyway not knowing how bad it was, the strings were so rusted they could have been used as medieval torture devices but I figured my bleeding fingertips were normal for a first time guitarist. The worst part is I kept them on for almost 4 months before changing them. I got the Washburn pictured above without ever playing it, just hearing it and word of mouth that they were quality, from an online american store called Adirondack (really handy to be honest, great selection of left handed gear and the prices are very reasonable) and haven't looked back. I have no idea what people are on about when they say x guitar plays well or x guitar doesn't play fast because I only know those two guitars. I wish I'd forced myself to learn right handed but I'd always have been wondering what could have been if I did that, picking up a right handed guitar felt really weird to me and I'd never have been able to build up the pace or rhythm I have in my right hand that I do with my left.

My mate has a Fender amp, can't really remember the name but it has lovely cleans and poor gains. He has no pedal, but my other mate ( who is very skilled as a guitar tech) has always suggested I get an amp with good cleans and then get a gain pedal for high distortion tones.

My 40/40 Zoom is dead :( RIP Little zoomy.

I want an effects pedal with 4 selectable settings, a volume control and an effects pedal (For modulating the current program).

Anyone got any good suggestions? I'm guessing things have moved on a lot since my 40/40?

I don't really want to spend more than £200. I've had Zooms, Boss, DODs and Korgs before and all were good (Except the G5 Korg was always a bit hissy on my amp)

Had a look at that one mate but it doesn't seem to have a volume control? Isn't that an effects pedal on the right?

Fair enough. My zoom had an effects pedal and a volume pedal alongside it (Plus the four switchable banks and a channel/bank select up and down)

U can assign all manner of effects to the exp pedal, or use the ctl pedal for a predetermined volume level etc for specific parts of a track.

Looking to get a new acoustic guitar, so want to sell my current one to help fund it. Problem is, I have no idea how much to expect for it. It is a Yamaha APX500, think it was around £260 when I bought it in January 2011 new. Still in good condition, great to play as well but just want an Epiphone acoustic now! Any ideas how much I could expect to get for it or anyone interested? http://students.autodesk.com/ama/public/110/201/1543183/-157672706299719100.jpg

Manchester United could win fifty titles, but they will always be the Rolling Stones of football. Good, just not quite that band from Liverpool.

I prefer the look of the darker one. But it's undeniable the option to plug in is good. I did have a pickup that you just stuck in the soundhole for my old acoustic, was pretty decent. God knows where it's gone.

I have a few guitars but im not very good. ( i just like the idea od being good. )

Since ive had a couple of kids my playing has gone to basically zero, i picked up the guitar last week and after 5 mins my fingers were in bits !

I always learnt the start of songs then just moved onto something else !

My guitars are ;

Yamaha FG-180 Nippon Red Label - This was my dads he bought it in the early seventies. It was a budget guitar but ive been told they are now worth a good few quid as they are collectors items.

Farida A62CE Electro Acoustic - That was about 650 i got that on the drip 50 quid a month !

Fender Strat - it has an american body but a japanese neck, i hardly ever play it to be honest. That was my dads too, i took it from his house one day and he never noticed and has never asked for it back :)

Okay, after a few years, gonna have another go at the guitar. I'm at uni, so need to buy a decent acoustic beginner guitar. Anyone have any suggestions? I have looked at these so far.

To be honest for acoustics and lower price range I'd consider going second hand.  Those guitars are fine (fender would be my choice, although I can't claim to have ever played an Ibanez acoustic). You'd probably get a decent second hand for not much more than your price range and get a slightly nicer guitar that'll last you longer. During a recession you'll always nab a bargain. Just bring a friend who knows a little bit to check the body, neck, heads and bridge.

In Ireland we have great website called adverts.ie for that stuff,  I'm sure you have a local equivalent or the buy and sell or a local guitar shop. Mostly, new or not, test it and find the one you like and feel comfortable with. Neck width and height the strings sit off the neck are the biggest things for me as I have undersized and underworked Jeremy Beadle hands to my continued ire 20 years later.

Best of luck with it too mate, always a bit jealous I can't start learning all over again. It's the best thing you'll ever do if you stick at it.

Post an update and a picture when you do choose it.

Spot on with the neck bit. I've always liked Ibanez (acoustic and the Artcore I use for the jazz stuff) necks a lot since I have smaller hands , but it's a matter of personal preference, which is why it's never a great idea to buy a guitar online without playing it first.

Fender acoustic necks always gave me some trouble. The D shaped ones in particular were a right pain.

Yup - go secondhand.  :)

I'd also suggest you look at Tanglewood acoustics.  Believe it or not, I bought a Tanglewood Super Jumbo from a bootsale for £12 with a gigbag... and it is comfortable, with a real booming sound.  This Tanglewood SJ was one of their more budget guitars.  Because Tanglewood isn't a 'trendy' name, the resale value is lower than Ibanez or Fender - you'll pick up a bargain.

What's your budget?

Budget would 100 quid max. Don't wanna spend more than that. Which second hand guitars should I look at? I'm at Warwick uni, so don't have much shops around unless I go to Coventry or Birmingham. Any suggestions in those areas? What about ebay?
It wouldn't be Liverpool if we didn't do it the hard way... ask Gareth Southgate.

I reckon you'll pick up a decent s/h one off eBay for that.  Just go to this link:

http://www.ebay.co.uk/sch/Acoustic-/33021/i.html

Stick the list in 'distance' order, and you'll see what's local - so you can try before you hand over the cash.  In fact, if you offer an off-eBay cash deal, you might get something cheaper.  Ebay fees are outrageous for the seller.

They're a nightmare to keep in tune and to put into tune. A nightmare to change the strings.  I hate 12 strings. There's something big hair and Pearl Jam MTV unplugged about them. Also they'd probably shred your fingers as a beginner.

I'd start with a six string.

And on an inexpensive guitar, you'll be doing quite a bit of that.

My acoustic suffered some humidity injuries. Needs treatment, but thankfully I found a half decent luthier who will get it sorted for me. Still, might need to invest in a better instrument.

I want this:

I can afford this:
