We’ve just finished watching “Under the Banner of Heaven”. It’s probably been mentioned on here already. Starring Andrew Garfield, Daisy Edgar-Jones, Gil Birmingham, Denise Gough, Sam Worthington, Wyatt Russell, a couple of others. I really enjoyed it and will definitely be reading the book. The use of flashbacks is a choice that a lot of people don’t like, but it’s probably necessary. I think it could have been an episode longer but definitely worth the watch.

Done with the Terminal List. Thought it was mediocre, bordering on shite. Felt like a drawn out, run of the mill revenge flick from 25 years ago. Could probably have been a decent told story, but the combination of oversaturated machismo, weapons and tactical gear porn - combined with the saccharine flashbacks, made it, in my opinion, horribly average.

I actually liked the Terminal list

Throwback to a simpler time of basic storyline that doesn't require a lot of thought when watching, combined with a lot of action and tactical gear porn  ;D

Just watched S1 of ITV's Manhunt, it's great though it makes me feel a bit weird enjoying dramatisations of real crimes.

was a good show, annoyed it didn't last long, and i get what you mean about enjoyment out of hideous crimes - my girl is forever watching real life crime type shows and i've asked a number of times why the hell does she watch so much murder porn (she's one of gentlest of people you'll ever meet, i find it bizarre) and she says she likes finding out how they solve the murders, yeah i get that but still, fucking weird especially for someone of her disposition, just this continuous conveyor belt of murder

bit of a throwback, recently watched The Andromeda Strain TV 'movie' (2008) - 2 episodes about hour and half each (tho wiki says four eps for some reason)

i'd seen the film way back in time but wasn't aware of this TV version, while i cant remember anything much about the original film, they did a good job with the TV show, if Crichton sci fi is your kind of thing (and this is more interesting than a straight up apocalyptic pandemic kind of movie but does sit in that genre i guess), defo worth the watch and i found it to download easily enough

no zombies (which is refreshing in itself), not full of action, just a good interesting sci fi well executed (tho i did find an aspect of the final act unnecessary and wonder whether that was added for TV)

i've just realised it's done by ridley and tony scott, btw i wouldnt watch a trailer for it if you think you might watch it, i've just seen one cos i was gonna post it in here for any who were unsure but imo they show too much, so decided against that

Enjoyed the 1st episode of The Sandman even if every now and again I thought Robert Smith just stuck the 2nd one on at least they all got released the same day.

Sandman is not what I was expect from the trailer.

Episode 5 is totally different from the one before a acting tour de force mostly set in one place

It's a wow.

But I'm sure people will totally disagree with me.

The Sandman, overall somewhat disappointed

There's a lot to like - the writing was good up to the 'rose' section, takes a dip through that whole section for some reason and is the main reason for being disappointed overall, the production is quality, most of the casting is good to excellent but the steaming turd in the punchbowl is Gwendoline Christie as Lucifer, fuck me it is woeful, off the top of my head can't recall a worse Lucifer ever, still reeling from how bad she was. Conversely the Corinthian is fun and done very well. Oh and Death is very good.

Shoutout to David Thewlis who is fantastic for his stint and plenty of nice cameos from Dance to Fry. Sandman himself is good but not constant i'd say, feels great at times then other times meh, a bit weak, but he's a great character and for the majority of it is done well.

Not going to say much about the 'crossover' nod that is the inclusion of Constantine in this show, cos in short it's not Constantine, it is utter shit, to a Constantine fan it borders on blashphemy (pun intended). Alongside Gwendoline Christie as Lucifer, they make up the two real low points of the show, with the laughable choice (that is beyond me) of the Constantine role easily kicking satan's ass in levels of the pathetic (i attribute no blame to the actress btw, this is purely down to the fuckwit that chose and wrote for her).

The pacing of the show for the first two 'acts' (loosely two main stories that straddle multiple episodes), is very slow, i can only assume this is intentional, maybe to give it an ethereal feel due to it's slow and, sometimes, indulgent dwelling. i can imagine some may have a problem with just how slow it is.

It ups tempo a bit from the 'rose' section through to seasons end. Tho this for me is the season's weakest section. I wasn't blown away with it before this, but i liked it, writing was strong, characterisation mainly good, stories carried well tho ponderous.

So it's the end section that was ultimately meh for me and takes down my overall liking of the first season. I think the phrase 'a mixed bag' is totally apt here.

Like i said at the outset, there's lots to like and if we can have more of that going forward we could have a winner (unfortunately we're going to see a lot more of Gwendoline Christie's useless Lucifer in season 2 going by the season outrow and that might just kill it... yeah, she is that bad)

I really enjoyed the series and I know nothing about the comic my total knowledge of the Sandman comes from the Metallica song.

My two fav episodes was 5 and 6 the one
Spoiler
set in the diner and the one about death where 2 gods have a bet if they give a person Eternal life if he would be begging for death very quickly and he meets him every 100 years to see how he's getting on loved that in the pub in 15 century people in the pub are moaning about the poll tax and when they met in modern times people in the pub are moaning about Thatcher and the poll tax and doing the same jokes.

I hope there is ja 2nd series but you never know with Netflix.

Someone has probably mentioned this already, but I wanted to make sure everyone knows. There isn't a specific release date yet, as far as I can tell, but the creators of the BRILLIANT series "Dark" are coming out with "1899" sometime this year. Can't fucking wait.

Up to the point where the Sandman meets Lucifer is excellent, the set design, the special effects, Squatterbloat and the drawn out walk. They get to the castle, doors open, blood floods out and then it jarringly cuts to him walking around the corner to Lucifier's throne room and it all just goes flat. I like the series but this is where the issues lie for me, the disparity in menace from one scene to the next.

Yes episode 4 was great as well the ride in the car mind you the duel reminded me of the one in the Disney cartoon The Sword In The Stone.

 ;D

actually that is a good shout, cos that is basically what it is

regards 1899, thanks for the head's up (whoever posted that), Dark was great and going by the trailer this is in english, which helps out my aging eyes

Her greatest asset is her ability to suck the air & fun out of any scene she's involved with.

i've no idea why they cast her as lucifer, is it cos she's reportedly six foot three? i swear to god it's the only thing i can think of, that they wrongly thought wouldn't it be cool if we had this big old bird playing lucifer

shambles

i'm really not a fan of changing genders of major characters when adapting material to the screen, i fucking hate it to be honest, but there are examples that have worked well (eg the librarian was switched to female as well but she did a good job), and there are examples of female lucifers doing a good job, but this is such a bad casting and we're fucking stuck with it and seeing as it appears she'll have major screen time in the second season, yeahhhhhhhhh not boding well

and i hope i never see that abomination of constantine ever again in this show

i will give props to netflix in that they dropped the whole season in one go - more of this please

Done with 3 seasons of Brassic. Now, that was good stuff! Thanks to whoever wrote about it in here, would not had known about it otherwise.

Season 4 in september I see, anyone know if it's an all episodes at once or weekly thing?

i think the only things i have watched with him in apart from GOT is Goldeneye and LOTR, yep, pretty sure that's it

Her greatest asset is her ability to suck the air & fun out of any scene she's involved with.

GoT was responsible for elevating a number of incredibly bad or limited actors due to its popularity. I'm going to use their character names:

Sansa
Jon Snow
Littlefinger
Danaerys
Brienne

Those are 5 utterly dreadful actors IMO.

Some of them have been good. eg Dinklage has always been a great actor, and Lena Headey is nearly always good (excellent in 300 and Dredd). Richard Madden has gone on to do some good things as well. I also thought Jamie Lannister (like Cersei) was portrayed perfectly in the show but the actor was let down by the fucking dreadful writing in the final season. But thats enough of a GoT derail - I know where this can go.

Was just about to reply to that too. Aiden Gillen limited?

Emilia Clarke did a perfectly good job, the show got worse when it ran out of material.

Couldn't believe my eyes! I've loved him in these TV shows...

The Wire
Love/Hate
Peaky Blinders
GOT
Kin
Mayor Of Kingstown etc etc

Not to mention the movies...

Dark Knight Rises
King Arthur
Bohemian Rhapsody

Probably missed loads too!  ;D

He might be a good actor, but his accent work is shocking. Just gives up halfway through GOT.

Lucifer had a hair do not dissimilar to Mrs Bouquet’s terrified next door neighbour.

Therefore I could not take her seriously.
