Very sad news. He was slightly before my time as a fan (as I've mentioned previously, I started supporting LFC after Istanbul, so I guess that makes me a glory hunter?
) but I've watched videos, and I've read about his era. By all accounts he was not only a great manager, but a
great man. Someone who inspired others, who made them believe in themselves, who made them feel an integral part of something bigger, greater than all of us.
Even beyond the accomplishments of the 2001 season (which, again, I only appreciated
ex post facto thanks to the wonders of the internet), the actual measure of what he did lies in front of our eyes. Much of what Liverpool FC did and has done, what LFC became and still is, in the 21st Century, is because of him. And for that, his name shall forevermore ring out in the voices of the supporters. For that, his name is etched and will remains so in the very foundations of this beloved club of ours. His memory, part of the DNA of Liverpool FC, another red thread in a glorious tapestry that is still being made.
A great manager and a great leader has been taken from us, but everything he did and achieved and
was shall remain with us and in the memories of everyone who was lucky enough to spend time with him. The fact that he has received so many touching tributes about his qualities as a
human being, beyond of what he achieved within the beautiful game, speaks volumes.
RIP Gérard. YNWA.
