This was featured on ESPN a couple of years back. Lutons front line of Brian Stein and Paul Walsh caused us all sorts of bother, full credit to Luton who just wouldnt fold their tent despite coming up against us at Anfield and doing so with all sorts of problems. Luton took the lead through Stein but a stunning volley from captain Graeme Souness drew us level with the ball crashing in off the post past goalkeeper Jake Findlay. Just before half time Souness was involved again as his perfectly weighted pass allowed Ian Rush to round goalkeeper Kirk Stephens and make it 2-1.

Luton refused to roll over though and shortly into the second half Stein lobbed Grobbelaar for 2-2 and they took the lead once more when David Moss gave them a surprise 3-2 lead down at the Kop End. With 15 minutes left substitute Craig Johnston made it 3-3 when he scored past Luton keeper Mal Donaghy.

Hang on, wait a second, whats going on here?

Findlay was in goal? then Stephens ? then Donaghy............. yep thats right, this was in the days before the bench had 7 players, or even 2. Back then there was just one sub on the bench and it was always an outfield player, so with the score at 1-1 Luton were forced to rejig when Findlay picked up an injury so with no keeper on the bench Kirk Stephens had to go in goal. Stephens was then beaten by Ian Rush, but to be fair there wasnt much he could do.

For some reason when Luton emerged for the second half, Mal Donaghy was then in goal, with Luton using their one sub to replace their injured keeper, it meant Stephens resumed his normal role and Donaghy took over the nets. He was beaten by Craig Johnstone, remarkably so it meant all 3 Liverpool goals were against 3 different goalkeepers.

unbelievable goal

That was a nasty away experience for the travelling reds, the stuff i heard was like a horror movie

fighting went on for hours after.

few things i heard/read in evos books
1. Liverpool fans let out in groups of 500 into waiting hordes of spurs fans, plod deliberately doing this so theyd get bashed ?
2. A hot dog seller laughing his arse off at Liverpool fans getting a hiding, apparently had his stand, boiling water and all turned over on him
3. a Liverpool fan thrown through the window of a hardware shop, realizing his surroundings he fired up a chainsaw and headed back out
4. some proper hard men on the train on way home all saying it was the scariest away game ever

Have always thought Spurs fans were the biggest shithouses.
I have been confronted twice by their fans spoiling for a fight...armed with a knife,one of them here on Arkles lane.

Back in '97 we defeated Arsenal 2-1 at Highbury, fondly remembered when Fowler honestly admitted straight away Seaman didn't touch him after he went past him & the ref fave a pen..went on to miss the penalty where Mcateer fired home (1st goal in 59 league games) the rebounded save off Seaman,Collymore scored our other goal.

Back in '99 we turned Everton over 3-2..some brilliant lasr gasp defending by Gerrard to claim the 3pts late on.
Famously remembered for this..and he bagged a brace too!

On sky now the first 4-3 , Will always remember the date of this game for the rest of my life , Wife started her labour pains early on that Wednesday morning so had to give my ticket away . The hospital said for her to hang on as long as she could then come into the women’s hospital so by kick off she’s struggling a bit but half time a bit more but she hung on for me to see the winner then off we went and then on the 4 th April the lad in my pic to the right of Rafa was born at 7 in the morning ...he’s 24 tomorrow

The most entertaining game I've ever been to (only been going since 2003)

I was 16 and can still remember the excitement building all day at school then the journey to Anfield, sampling the atmosphere. The feeling of despair when Walcott broke away and the elation when Babel sealed the tie.

What a glorious period we had in Europe between 2005 and 2009.

Great break away goal and highlighted how good McManaman was for Fowler. Always felt like he set up at least half of his goals.

Never gets talked about enough. Considering what was at stake and the emotion surrounding the day, it has to be one of the greatest PL games of all time.

Had we gone on to win it then I think it would obviously be talked up more. It was a great game. We blitzed them, they came back and showed their class and yet we still dig deep enough to win it. God, it really felt it was meant to be after that.

32 (thirty two!) years since the famous 5-0 win over Nottingham Forest. I was lucky enough to be at the game and now I feel incredibly old!

15 years since the goalless draw in Turin today. My biggest regret from that season was that I didn’t go. Xabi Alonso came back that night and was the best player on the park. I was hugely proud of our result at Anfield the week before but never expected us to get through the 2nd leg.

Lovely stuff. The Barnes pass for the Aldridge goal and the Barnes nutmeg on Chettle both show off in a moment the best of what they’d been doing all season.
