August 19th has been a busy day by the look of it down the years.

2009: If Liverpool could have won this 2-0, and scored the other goals 1 in each of the games against Stoke the previous season, then they'd have been Champions! A comprehensive win though made up for the poor start at Tottenham. Liverpool would score 16 goals in winning their 1st 4 home League games.

I detect a mistake here by myself as we lost our 2nd home League game 3-1 to Villa. Apologies folks.

It most certainly was his debut goal. The word debut as an adjective means first. It was his first Liverpool goal. It wasn't his debut appearance for the club but that should have been covered on the 11th of August eight days ago.

Update : It was ... on http://www.redandwhitekop.com/forum/index.php?topic=280869.4360

It's a bit of a grey area this. I have always tended to work on a debut goal being a goal in a players 1st game for the club. If he doesn't score in his 1st game then I would describe the 1st goal as a 1st goal rather than a debut goal. I'm not disagreeing with Kriss, but I can see where Anfieldpurch is coming from.

I am just trying to be fair to this thread's originator, Rafa_La, who has been referring to 'debut goals' for months without it causing any controversy before.

Kevin Keegan’s Charity Shield ban will last until the end of September and this is the first of the eleven matches that he will miss. John Toshack didn’t play at Luton three days earlier but takes Keegan’s place at Molineux on this Tuesday evening. Carlisle are the surprise-leaders of the First Division after the first two matches of the season.  Ipswich Town also have maximum points with the two Merseyside clubs tucked behind them, each having a win and a draw from the opening two games. Wolves are the other club with three points after adding this draw to their opening-day win at Burnley.

Brilliance from John Barnes sets up a Wembley winner for John Aldridge at the same stadium where he had missed a penalty-kick against the same opponents in the F.A. cup final exactly three months to the day earlier. Aldo’s second goal of the game from 1 minute on :

Alonso’s brilliant free-kick midway through the first half brings our first League victory of the season. Kelvin Davis gets a hand to the ball but can only push it into the top corner of the Anfield Road net.

Debuts on this day

Kevin Lewis (1960)
Michael Robinson (1983)

Born in Ellesmere Port, Kevin returned to the North-West to play for Liverpool after 62 League appearances for his first club, Sheffield United. He became one of Bill Shankly's earliest signings in June 1960 after making his name as a winger with the Blades and becoming an England Youth international. Kevin was Liverpool's leading scorer in his debut season (1960-61) with 19 from 32 Second Division matches, 3 more than Dave Hickson and 4 more than Roger Hunt. Although he started the next season as the team's right-winger, he was displaced by a young Ian Callaghan as Autumn turned into Winter. But he switched wings a year later as Callaghan became established in the side and managed an impressive total of 10 goals from 19 First Division matches in what would turn out to be his final season at Anfield. Kevin returned to Yorkshire in August 1963 and played little more than a season with Huddersfield Town before departing from the Football League scene at the very early age of 24.

Leicester-born Michael had started his playing career as a teenager with Preston North End and then had one year at Maine Road before moving to the south coast and joining Brighton & Hove Albion. The exploits of the Sussex club in reaching the 1983 F.A. cup final meant that many of their players became much more recognisable and Michael made a high-profile move to Anfield in the wake of Brighton's relegation to the Second Division. Incoming manager Joe Fagan was patient with his new signing and picked him for the opening 14 League games but Robinson didn't score until the 9th (although he did make up for lost time a bit by grabbing a terrific hat-trick at West Ham on that day) but only another 3 League goals followed by the end of the season and Michael didn't get to play in the last 10
fixtures anyway as his new club retained their domestic championship. As some consolation for an indifferent season personally, he could at least claim a League championship medal and a substitute appearance on the memorable night in Rome when Liverpool won the European cup for the 4th time. He had also been a Wembley substitute in the all-Merseyside League cup final but didn't figure in the Maine Road replay three days later. In 1984-85 Michael only figured in 6 more League matches (with 3 of those being as substitute) before everybody seemed to accept the inevitable and realise that it hadn't been a 'dream move' at all, for either the player or the club. He was transferred to Queens Park Rangers and had a couple of years in West London before trying his luck in the Spanish League with Osasuna. Although Michael didn't play long in Spain, he remained in the country  and after learning the language to an extremely capable level, made a very good living as a respected and knowledgeable soccer reporter and analyst within the Spanish television network.

Leicester City were a team that caused us a lot of problems in the 1960s. In the first half of this decade they beat us in three successive matches at Anfield as well as knocking us out of the F.A. cup at the semi-final stage in 1963. But after we beat them in an F.A. cup 6th round replay in 1965, our fortunes against them began to change and this 3-2 victory in 1966 was the 3rd of 5 successive home wins over them for us.

How RICH is the history of any Club to have 3 players like Dalglish, Alonso & Garcia associated with it?

1983: The media predicted that Man United would dominate football after they won the Charity Shield. Some 9 months later Liverpool had won the treble, United had won the Charity Shield!!

1988: Wimbledon again score 1st at Wembley, but a John Aldridge double exorcises his own ghosts, and gives Liverpool revenge for the FA Cup Final loss.

1994: Steve McManaman's 1st was a magnificent individual goal, the likes of which we would be treated to on more than one occassion. The Reds spoil Palace's return to the top flight with this emphatic win. Chris Armstrong provides the only consolation for Palace when the score is 3-0.

2005: Not a game that will stay in the memory long. Xabi Alonso scores with a fabulous free kick, but Liverpool played far better at Middlesbrough the previous week and drew. Amazingly, it would take the Reds until September 24th to score a League goal from open play!!

2011: There was plenty of luck with the Ramsay og that gave Liverpool the lead. They were worthy winners though after controlling the game, while they also had a 1st half goal chalked off for a foul that only the linesman saw. Luis Suarez seals the win in injury time.

August 21st review now.

1982: Can we play you every week? Liverpool complete what is probably a unique treble of beating Tottenham to win the Milk Cup, League, and Charity Shield in 1982. Ian Rush scores the only goal of the game at Wembley.

1985: Liverpool follow up their opening day success against Arsenal with a 2 all draw at Villa Park. Villa lead twice, but Ian Rush and Jan Molby earn the Reds a point. It could have been even better, but Nigel Spink saves an 88th minute penalty from Rush. Molby took over penalty duties after that.

1991: Steve McManamam scores his 1st senior goal for the Reds with a diving header at Maine Road. Sadly though, Man City were 2-0 up at the time, and this proves to be merely consolation.

1995: There are times when you just have to hold your hand up and say "what a brilliant goal". This Monday night defeat at Leeds was sealed 4 minutes after half time when Tony Yeboah controls the ball, and dispatches a stunning volley into the top corner of the net (not unlike Zolten Gera for WBA). Liverpool don't deserve to lose, but the closest they come in the search for an equaliser is when they hit the post. Yeboah scored a few spectacular goals for Leeds in the early part of the 1995/96 season with 1 at Wimbledon that particularly stands out. When he hit the ball it stayed hit!!

1999: Liverpool suffer their 2nd successive 1-0 defeat as Brian Deane scores the only goal at the Riverside. The Reds had won 3-1 there the previous season, but would only enjoy one more success there in the next 10 years.

2000: Graham Poll takes centre stage as the Reds lose 2-0 at Arsenal. Lauren scrambles Arsenal into a 13tn minute lead before Poll decides to take over. He sends Gary McAllister off 1st for what was an honest challenge between 2 totally commited players. Martin Keown actually stamps on Gary's hand as he screams at Poll for a red card after running halfway up the pitch!! Patrick Vieria is then sent off for the 2nd successive game. He receives 2 yellow cards, but the 2 fouls together were barely worth 1 yellow. Dietmar Hamman then follows for 2 bookings as the game is reduced to 10v9. Arsenal score again late on as they take adavantage of the extra man. Neither manager is impressed by 'The Thing From Tring!'

2001: Liverpool cruise into the CL group stages by beating FC Haka 4-1 at anfield to complete a 9-1 aggregate. Although I was there, I can only recall an own goal at the end, and can't recall who our other scorers were? Must do better!!

2004: Rafa Benitez manages Liverpool at Anfield for the 1st time. They fall behind in 1st half injury time when Jerzy Dudek fumbles the ball to allow Nicolas Anelka to score for Man City. Milan Baros has Liverpool level on 48 minutes when he converts a glorious pass from Steven Gerrard. The same 2 then combine for the winner on 75 when Gerrard follows up to score after David James had blocked Baros. Graham Poll was then upto his old tricks as he sent Richard Dunne off for a 2nd yellow card despite the fact that the 2nd foul was a straight red!! There was also one outrageous bit of skill from Djbrill Cisse by the Main Stand side corner flag at the Kop End.

Ps 1985: Phil Neal took and scored a penalty in a 3-1 home win v Watford on September 7th. He then lost his place though, and 3 weeks later Molby scored twice from the spot as Tottenham were beaten 4-1 at Anfeld. From the on it was Molby all the way with penalties.

21st August 1971 : Newcastle United 3 Liverpool 2

Malcolm Macdonald scores a hat-trick on his home debut for Newcastle but that only tells half the story. Emlyn puts us ahead with a screamer (it’s on this clip … unfortunately the commentary is a little out of sync with the action :

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=m7h2E19x3mk)

and we then have a second goal mysteriously disallowed that would have given us a commanding lead. We also miss a penalty a few minutes before the interval, Tommy Smith seeing his spot-kick saved by Iam McFaul. Macdonald talks about his hat-trick :

We start a new League season with a home fixture for the 4th time in six years and Steve Heighway, scorer of the winning goal on the opening day against Stoke City in 1973, repeats the trick against Norwich City with a second-half winner past Kevin Keelan. David Johnson, signed from Ipswich Town nine days earlier, makes his full debut for the club.

21st August 1979 : Liverpool 0 Bolton Wanderers 0

We should have started the League season at Wolverhampton Wanderers three days earlier but work on a new stand at Molineux was not completed on time and that opening fixture had to be postponed. The defending champions get a tremendous ovation as they run out but the team struggles to break down a Bolton side that only avoided defeat in 8 of its 21 away matches in 1978-79. Phil Neal has to leave the field suffering from double-vision in the first half; in the second, Kenny Dalglish slots the ball past Seamus McDonagh in the Bolton goal, rekferee Ken Baker awards the goal but then reverses his decision after taling to one of his linesmen, who had signalled offside against Terry McDermott.

21st August 1982 : Liverpool 1 Tottenham Hotspur 0

Ian Rush runs on to Phil Thompson’s inch-perfect pass  and slips the ball past Ray Clemence to bring the club its third Charity Shield in four seasons. David Hodgson comes on as a second-half substitute for Kenny Dalglish to make his debut for the club following his transfer from Middlesbrough earlier in the month.

We are five minutes from defeat yet probably should have won. Gary Shaw and Ian Rush get the first-half goals before Mark Walters puts Villa ahead with about a quarter of an hour left. Jan Mølby gets our late equaliser but we are then awarded a penalty after Rush is pushed in the back. Rush, who has only taken three penalties for Liverpool before in competitive matches (four if you include the shoot-out in Rome), all of them successful it should be noted, decides to take this one but shoots too close to Nigel Spink, who makes the save. In the last seconds Craig Johnston shoots past Spink but Steve McMahon clears off the line. Three weeks later McMahon will be a Liverpool player.

We make a late effort to grab a point after David’s White brace has put City in charge. Steve McManaman dives to head his first senior goal for Liverpool then almost immediately we get a penalty after Dean Saunders is tackled by Andy Hill. Saunders takes the kick and beats Tony Coton but the ball hits the crossbar and is quickly cleared. Highlights here :

Tony Dorigo lumps the ball forward, Rod Wallace heads it back and Tony Yeboah’s explosive shot screams past David James and into the net via the crossbar. One of the best goals ever scored against Liverpool without any doubt. Goal here :

Brian Deane’s goal increases our woes seven days after we lost at home to Watford. In the fledging Premier League table we are in 17th place. Below us in the three relegation places are Newcastle United, Derby County and Sheffield Wednesday. Only Wednesday of that trio will actually go down.

21st August 2000 : Arsenal 2 Liverpool 0

Referee Graham Poll has a huge influence on this Monday evening fixture at Highbury. Poll sends off Gary McAllister in the 39th minute and then 39 minutes of play later also sends off Dietmar Hamann. Arsenal also lose a player (Patrick Vieira) but, even though there were only 19 players on the pitch at the end, it wasn’t a particularly dirty game. Early and late goals from Lauren and Henry confirm our defeat. Of our two dismissals, McAllister was unlucky because, after clattering into Vieira, the Frenchman rolls around as if he has been shot; and Hamann is definitely unlucky to get a second yellow after tangling with Robert Pires.

Alrerady holding a commanding first-leg lead, there is no way we are not going through to the group stage of the Champions League. Gerard Houllier makes several changes from the team that has beaten West Ham United in the previous match at the weekend. He does, however, retain Pegguy Arphexad in goal. All our goals are scored by Englishmen, including a bizarre slice into his own net by former Manchester United Youth player David Wilson.

The team recovers to win after trailing at the interval. Certainly in a home game, this is the first time this has happened for more than five years. Nicolas Anelka, who scored 5 times against Liverpool for other clubs, opens the scoring on the stroke of half-time. Milan Baros and Steven Gerrard get the goals that turn a possible defeat into victory. Goals here :

DEBUTS ON THIS DAY

Bill Shepherd (1948)

Bill made his debut for Liverpool at full-back on the opening day of the 1948-49 League season and only missed 1 of the 42 League matches played that year. But although he played in the first 4 games of the following season, his place was quickly taken by Eddie Spicer and he only added another 2 games to his total by the end of 1949-50. Just seven more appearances followed over the next two seasons and Bill's final match for Liverpool came away to Blackpool on Boxing Day, 1951.

I was at that one. All I can remember was Andy fucking Gray whining to the ref for 90 minutes.

Correct about home games where we'd trailed at half time Kriss. The previous occassion was 1st May 1999 when we beat Tottenham 3-2 after trailing 2-0 at the interval.

I'm glad you mentioned that one, Alan. I actually thought it was a better goal than the one he scored against us. Here's his fantastic strike at Wimbledon :

Superb goal. He'd already scored twice on the opening day of the season at West Ham, so was full of confidence when we went to Leeds on the Monday night.

August 22nd review.

1987: A collapsed sewer under the Kop caused Liverpool to have their 1st 3 home games postponed. They should have faced Derby on this day after also being scheduled to face Charlton the previous Tuesday. September 12th was the 1st time most fans saw the Reds in action, and it was well worth the wait. I did see them at Coventry, more of which when the time comes.

1993: It's hard to believe that Swindon were once a Premier League club. They'd already lost their opening 2 fixtures when Liverpool took them apart in front of the TV cameras. Neil Ruddock and Steve McManaman had the Reds in control at the interval, and McManaman again, Ronnie Whelan and Mike Marsh completed a 5-0 rout. Swindon would concede 100 goals in the process of being relegated, but Liverpool's fortunes would take a downward spiral after this win.

1998: Plenty of quality football on show as Liverpool host double winners Arsenal, but neither team can find a goal. The highlight of the game for LFC fans was an excellent home debut from Veggard Hegem.

2006: Troubles in Israel mean the 2nd leg of Liverpool's CL 3rd qualifying round tie with Maccabi Haifa is played in Kiev. The Reds endure a difficult night trying to protect a narrow advantage, but Peter Crouch gives them breathing space with a 54th minute goal. Maccabi equalise 10 minutes later, but Liverpool progress to the group stages.

During the TV commentary on this game, David Pleat said of Peter Crouch "Rafa likes a big one up there!" I think I know what he meant, but given the nocturnal habits Pleat was known for, driving round red light districts, I do wonder?

John McLaughlin scores twice in only his fourth first-team appearance. He hits two sweet strikes past Huddersfield goalkeeper Terry Poole at the Kop end in the first half but is fortunate with one of them because it takes a big deflection on its way into the net. Alun Evans moves on to 3 goals from 3 games with a brace of his own in the second half.

This was a hugely-impressive performance in East Anglia as the team sets out an early marker to defending champions Nottingham Forest and any other clubs that aspire to succeed them in the top spot. Portman Road has not been a particularly lucky stadium for us in the 1970s. This is just our first victory there in ten matches during the decade.  So that poor past record makes this win all the more commendable.

22nd August 1993 : Swindon Town 0 Liverpool 5

Our perfect start to the season continues with this five-goal mauling of Premier League new boys Swindon Town. We have a 100% record from our first three matches and have scored ten times while conceding only once. It is a harsh lesson in top-division football for Swindon, who still have zero points and have conceded nine times in losing their opening three League matches of the season. They are already rooted to the bottom of the table … and they’ll still be there in May!
