Henderson for sturridge would be my change. None of this 4-2-4 nonsense, back to 4-3-3.
Agree with this. We need to control games better and this starts by keeping the ball and not beeing overrun in midfield.

Sturridge on the bench gives a brilliant threat if you need it.
"You just have to give them credit for not throwing in the towel" - Gennaro Gattuso, May, 2005

And then we'll get 4th as well and everyone in the whole world can do one.

Sturridge's little niggly injuries are a bit annoying aren't they?

Like the look of that midfield though.

Isn't it the same thigh injury he's had since we bought him?

Think that will sort itself out in pre-season. Don't think he's getting a chance to fully recover before being thrown back in, so needs that extended period of rest.

No idea, but the way he's been playing one game and then missing the next is just annoying.

Sturridge has a knock apparently - his persistent injuries are getting frustrating.

Not sure he's been fully fit since that first injury he picked up.

Could make selection a tad easier for Rodgers. Really think we need Hendo in there today.

Billy Liddell ‏@Liddellpool 3m
#rumour LFC vs A Villa Reina Johnson Carragher Agger Enrique Lucas Gerrard Henderson Downing Suarez Coutinho

I really like this. That's our strongest line up on current form - even when everyone's fit and firing. I fancy us for a nervy win today.

Watch out for Charles N'zogbia. He's the type of player that would have woken up this morning with a big grin on his face, thinking "Sky Cameras! ;D"

Fair enough if that's the case, looked slightly off vs Southampton and Spurs compared to the other games to be fair.

I think we will learn a lot today about how far we have come under Rodgers, with all the top teams responding to the pressure yesterday (apart from the declining Chelsea) we have to show we have the character to respond also.

I wouldn't be surprised if Henderson is on the left with Coutinho in behind Suarez. So it's still the 4-2-3-1 rather than 4-3-3.

Just re: the 4-2-4, while I agree we lost the midfield against Southampton it's interesting that Chelsea had 4-2-3-1 out and lost anwyay. I think the biggest thing against Southampton was that we didn't match their intensity and we didn't press well enough, mental things. Tactically we made it harder on top of mentally not being right for it (which is pretty unforgiveable, as Rodgers seems to feel as well).

It's all well and good playing a 4-2-3-1 but it depends how deep the one in the middle of the '3' is going to drop. If its suarez or coutinho then more often than not they'll leave the other 2 behind them exposed.
With henderson he's more likely to provide a bit more protection.

We need to let Sturridge rest the injury, let but heal properly. Doesn't help he's been dragged to two different countries for the sake of a few minutes against a side I could score against either, but that's England for you.

I like this side, good balance.
If he's being asked to head the ball too frequently - which isn't exactly his specialty - it could affect his ear and cause an infection. Especially if the ball hits him on the ear directly.

A shame Sturridge isn't starting but i like the look of that team. The same team that played away at Wigan. Let's hope the Coutinho-Suarez combo is at it's best.

Edit- Just seen Sturridge is on the bench. Good news.

Sturridge paying the price for coasting through the last few games. Good call from Rodgers.

With henderson he's more likely to provide a bit more protection.

Suarez does because he thinks like a forward. Coutinho should be more disciplined though.

For my money, I think it will be Lucas/Gerrard/Henderson in the middle. Coutinho/Suarez/Downing. Henderson won't have to cover the left so much, so he will have a pressing job, meaning we can expect to pin them back a lot if they go for the 4-4-2 they've been playing in recent weeks.
Better looking than Samie.

Think that's the line-up most would have gone with.  Good selection and a good set-up by the look of things, very happy to see Henderson back in the team.  It's nice to have a striker on the bench as well, I really like Sturridge but it's good to have a potential match-winner on the bench just in case things don't go our way.

Very happy with the team, I would've picked exactly the same 11. We also have Sturridge on the bench, who can bring a change to the game if things are not going great.

No doubt about that...we could have still lost even if we went 4-5-1. The issue that most had was that we made the game unnecessarily open from the beginning.

But thats over with now and this line up is a clear reflection that lessons have been learned.
