Bigger issue is do you want to take money from an owner who murders journalists and homosexuals?

This. I said it the other day about Gerrard being potentially their manager, if he took that job i'd lose all respect for him.

Was just talking to a friend and they wouldn't believe that Qatar was basically the reason this finally went ahead.  Most people outside of the handful of affected fan bases just don't seemingly care.  They don't care about Chelsea, they don't care about ManC or PSG and they aren't going to care about Newcastle unless MBS starts chopping up foreigners...

Unfortunately they probably wonít care until it affects their clubs directly. Maybe it never will.
Football has always been a massive part of my life. I never thought I would even consider it not being so, but these sportswashing state takeovers, and the control they are getting on the game,  are just sickening.

Amnesty International coined the expression "sportswashing" and it includes club sponsorship and not just by state funded clubs. It should be noted  Nicholas McGeehan (probably the most widely quoted HR activist in the UK media) does make the point in the video posted in here a few days ago that the ownership model is the one to be most worried about because of the scope for additional political ends and that they can directly ruin clubs and/can ruin the game more generally. But where are the red lines?

Off the top of my head and aside from PSG, City and Chelsea all of the below are taking the coin and facilitating "sportswashing":

Arsenal - Emirates and Rwanda
United - Saudi Telecom and Aeroflot
Bayern - Qatar
Real Madrid - Emirates
AC Milan - Emirates
Barcelona - ex Qatar
FA - Emirates
Benfica- Emirates
Lyons - Emirates
Olympiacos - Emirates

I donít personally have an issue with the likes of Emirates sponsoring clubs, itís a global airline in a competitive market, itís not distorted the market in what it pays clubs and personally I have always seen itís sponsorships as promoting the airline (and maybe by extension Dubai as a destination) rather then the government of Dubai.

But for full disclosure I have flown with Emirates many times both to Dubai and India, and will be flying to Dubai with them in February.

They wonít care because it doesnít effect most clubs, the mid table will stay in the mid table. Outside of us, United, Arsenal and Spurs I canít see any other supporters being overly worried concerned.

The fans of about 14 PL clubs have no other interest outside of their club being in the league and us not winning it. They really don't give a shit that they will miss out on a Europa/Conference place, its of no interest to them, they just don't care. The game is fucked and they don't see it.

I think most fans of of most PL clubs recognise that the game is well and truly fucked. That's where their apathy stems from IMO. They know the game has ventured down a dangerous road of commercialism/consumerism and there's nothing that any of us can really do to stop it at this point.

True, we canít control it. The sad thing is not enough fans actually care, if they did then we could do something about it. If fans were prepared to just not turn up to games involving the state owned clubs it would make a massive statement , yes it hurts your our clubs too if we donít turn up/ walk out but it looks like itís going to be left to the fans to do something drastic before it is even looked at.
Either that or protests during the game.

The Pandemic showed how much football needs the fans.

All the fans would have to do is agree to disrupt their own games with MCFC and NUFC to a point that they ALL get forfeited and t hat the fans would regard whoever finished 3rd as the actual champions.

You'd soon see action taken.

Won't happen though because football fans would rather fuck eachother over in the short term.

Saw a City fan who still goes the game earlier, asked him how it felt to not be the richest club anymore? His reply was "finally a set of owners who are worse than ours". So even though he knows how bad Abu Dhabi are, he's still going the match. The game is fucked.

All they care about is winning a few trophies. Imagine how desperate they are for a bit of success that they can excuse their club being owned by such murderous regimes. It really is beyond me how anyone can see football as being more important than the atrocities that these regimes commit.

I have to say, I am really disappointed about a number of comments on this thread. Newcastle football club has been around a long time, and has a very illustrious record. The last few decades haven't been too successful, but that is part of the point, surely? A club with such a history spanning more than 100 years needs to be given broader moral support because once it is gone, it is gone forever...

They've been around for more than 100 years?... Really?... So have most football clubs in the top four tiers of English football.

Stoke City 1863, Notts Forest 1865, Sheffield Wednesday 1867 are the earliest clubs still going in the top four divisions...  ...Middlesbrough were formed in 1876 and Sunderland in 1879... ...Newcastle weren't formed until 1892, the same year as Liverpool.

As for an illustrious record? Not particularly. Their fourteen trophies include the Fairs Cup and the Intertoto Cup.

Weirdly Reading were formed in 1871 and are the 4th oldest team in the country. Another southern team wasn't formed for 8 years.

Emirates is a properly run business, for profit, they've consistently made profits and operated independently of Dubai itself, they don't own any clubs. Qatar and Etihad are failing airlines propped up by their governments. It's why when they sponsor clubs, it's definitely sportswashing because financially as standalone companies it would be inept of them to pay such huge sponsorship fees. In contrast Emirates as an airline can and isn't being funded by DIC to just fund those sponsorships.

Saw this on another forum.

Newcastle may be desperate for glory, but so are others

AMID all the hullabaloo about Newcastle Unitedís takeover by the Saudi Arabian sovereign wealth fund, there was an underlying feeling the clubís fans were entitled to celebrate the transaction because they had waited so long for success. It is true that Newcastle have gone 52 years without any form of silverware, but they are not alone in being an underachieving club. Certainly, nobody should be using the phrase, ďthey deserve this because they want it so muchĒ, a throwaway rolled-out by TV ďtalentĒ shows full of weeping wannabes and hyberbole.

For example, in the current Premier League, there are four clubs (Brentford, Brighton, Crystal Palace and Watford) who have never won a single major trophy. Burnley have waited the longest, 61 years since they won the league title. Then thereís West Ham and Wolverhampton Wanderers, who have gone 41 without a trophy on their boardroom table.

In Germany, exactly half of the 18-team Bundesliga have never won a trophy, while poor old Hertha Berlin have gone 90 years without a sniff of silverware. It was 1931 when they were last champions of Germany. Among the owners of barren trophy cabinets are RB Leipzig, who despite being in contention for honours, have yet to break their duck.

Only four clubs from Italyís Serie A have never won a cup, but thereís a lot who have been waiting for what must seem like an eternity. Udinese (91 years), Genoa (84), Venezia (80) and Atalanta (58) are all among the most patient of clubs.

Nine clubs from La Liga are potless, while Athletic Bilbao have waited the longest among the past winners, some 37 years. Interestingly, seven teams have lifted trophies in the past three seasons from Spain, highlighting their strength in European competition.

France, despite the dominance of Paris Saint-Germain, has only five Ligue 1 teams who have never won a bean. Eleven clubs have won something since 2001. Of those that can look back on past glory, Reims have been waiting longest Ė 30 years.

The top 10 most patient clubs

Burnley1960 61

Yes, most clubs from the old organisation you refer to here as English football are indeed over 100 years old. that is my point - this buyout is another, irreversible, nail in the coffin of football as it used to be. Soon, only incredibly rich individuals or sovereign states will own football clubs. In ten years it will be difficult for clubs like Liverpool and Spurs to compete. I doubt we can stop it now, even if all fans acted with a single will.

You don't like me using the term "illustrious record" to describe Newcastle? Sounds petty on your part. That is your problem, not mine.

The term is not factually correct.

It is. Quick check of the definition online: "well known, respected, and admired for past achievements.".

NUFC is:

Well know - yes
respected - by me, yes
admired for past achievements - by me, yes.

So the term is factually correct. If we assume opinions can vary based on what a fact actually 'means'.

It is. Quick check of the definition online: "well known, respected, and admired for past achievements.".

NUFC is:

Well know - yes
respected - by me, yes
admired for past achievements - by me, yes.

So the term is factually correct. If we assume opinions can vary based on what a fact actually 'means'.

You go on about "illustrious" record. I'd suggest this is NOT factually correct.

Definition of illustrious per  Merriam-Webster
1: notably or brilliantly outstanding because of dignity or achievements or actions.

Dignity..not since they took the blood money. And as one needs to be "notably or brilliantly outstanding" at dignity, i'd suggest they've not been that, if they ever were,  since Robson left. Their dignity is tainted since then.

Achievements...I suppose they have some in their past but as has been pointed out, no major trophy since 1955. That certainly doesn't qualify as "notably or brilliantly outstanding" .

Actions.. see dignity above.

The difference between fact and opinion right there.
The fans here are the greatest in the land. They know the game and they know what they want to see. The people on the Kop make you feel great - yet humble. I'm just one of the people...

I would definitely support us forfeiting games against the state owned clubs.

Ive already started. Not watched any matches involving City, PSG or Chelsea even against us this season. You can add the barcodes to that as well now.

Came in here to read about football losing its soul only to find the Susie Dent appreciation thread.  ::)
And all the world is football shaped, It's just for me to kick in space. And I can see, hear, smell, touch, taste.

If your concern is about the direction of football then I think many people will agree it's going to shit. But I'm at a loss to know what Newcastle's age has to do with it? Your post came across as if Newcastle were an exceptional club rather than just one of many clubs formed in the late nineteenth century with a modest trophy record.

State-funded clubs are bad regardless of the status of the club.
