Apologies if mentioned previously (only scanned the thread), but how about Aretha Franklin?

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=N5S6Ohl9UAg

I believe John Peel played it at the Hillsborough tribute concert at Anfield?

I'm in the process of making a CD of as many versions as I can get my hands on, not many people's cup of tea but it makes me happy (my wife thinks I'm off my head). I was expecting more from the Aretha Franklin version given the story behind it, Tom Jones' version is very good but his voice is so distinctive it takes away from the song. Johnny Cash is decent but my favourite, other than the Kop/Gerry & the Pacemakers would be Elvis, its a great version and very moving.

(Don't tell anyone I liked the G4 version)

The second HJC Cup possibly 2003/4. Can't remember the year too much John Daniels.

After the presentations and Kieran Taylor's (Goole Blue - chelsea fan from the official site back in the days it wasnt populated by muppets) Dad had made a speech.

Kieran had Cystic Fibrosis and had recently passed away, so his family and friends entered a team to participate, with proceeds going to both HJC and Cystic Fibrosis iirc. It was possibly one of the most emotional experiences of my life to date, after chants of "Theres only one Kieran Taylor" that went of for a good 10 minutes there was a brief silence..... then as one the whole of the room began.

"When you walk...."

Not a beat was missed, pure acopella [sp!] version, such was the raw emotion grief, happiness, togetherness in the rendition, there was nae a dry eye in the place. Unfortunately I am nowhere near poetic or eloquant [sp!] to describe it, but those of you (if any) who where there will probably remember it. Again proving that the song is more than just a song for the match, it defines us, binds us and sets us apart

Still gives me goosebumps whenever I think about it.

A number of years ago Elvis Costello performed it on Children in Need I think, either that or Comic Relief, and it blew me sideways. Best cover of it I've ever heard. Wish I'd recorded it, can't find it anywhere.  >:(

I sing YNWA to my girls as a bedtime song.   One of them is now singing it beautifully - and she loves doing it.

Here is a fantastic version by Andre Rieu (famous violinist, conductor and composer)

A wonderfully Stirring and emotional version.

Right, think I might record her singing it and post it.  Yes, I'm a horrendous proud father type person.

I know he's doing it for the HJC, but Taylor's is horrendous. Different tune, different words, different chord sequence. It's not the same song, FFS. After hearing it a few months ago, I've only just listened to it all the way through, couldn't bring myself to do so before. It doesn't improve with time.

Don't judge me by this, BUT, I used to have a CD that I put on when I was driving during the night, it was like a sort of opera/ballad/hymn type collection but used to get me through the night, anyway........................

Harry Secombe :duh recorded a version of YNWA, and what a version it was !  Used to have me with goosebumps every single time I played it.

Sad but true.

Katherine Jenkins is also a good version.

Gerry's will always be the benchmark but...

The Elvis Costello cover is such a powerful rendition of the best song ever written.

There's a new song by Mark Knopfler called Just a Boy Away from Home from the album Down the Road Wherever that has an outro which is a lovely instrumental guitar version of YNWA.

Worth a listen.
