My speedtest has dropped steadily over the last 3 months from 8meg down to the 4 I'm currently getting.

Sky broadband.

Sometimes it's barely 0.5 meg

Why has this happened ?

I can get BT Infinity on the cheap intro deal, should I bin SKY off, or is there something else that may be causing it ?

Playing havoc with my streaming ability.

Let me guess. Stuck in a flat on the Royal Exchange?

If you have a sky router. Switch it off and on 5 times in quick -ish (over a couple of mins). This will trick the SKY systems to do a new line check on your line and might force them to adjust your speed and get you onto a better quality line

If not then check your estimated speed and if its well below that then you can cancel your contract without penalty.

Nah out in the sticks heading towards Ormskirk.

Will try that with the router though and see what it does!

Not three bad this.....in a hotel too! Last hotel I stayed in for more than a couple of nights was the Sheraton Miami Airport where I was lucky if I got 2Mb/s download and most of the time a tenth of that.....

Right out in the sticks here but only 0.8 miles from the exchange. The BT Openreach website says the exchange has fibre optic now (must be part of the rural rollout) but no provider has it as an option for my postcode. Any ideas how this is supposed to work?

Also, could anyone advise why my internet connection cuts out every afternoon for between 1-4 hours? The Wifi works and the router is fine but the internet connection just cuts out. Grrrr!

Not bad here but nowhere near as good as paul's ya flash bastid....

Yesterday it wouldn't even ping and when it finally did the download was 0.2 so I picked up the phone and complained to the Help Desk. This is the result of complaining in a hotel that you practically live in

Fibre is available at a cabinet by cabinet basis so even if your exchange is enabled, your cabinet may not be.

I recently moved into a new place and got 120mb fiber optic broadband. The speed is clearly advertised as that on the website. But im only getting these speeds. That surely cant be correct for 120mb? Can anyone tell me?

The speed is great but if I'm not getting what I'm paying for, why would I pay it!

How long you had the broadband installed?

Most speeds when advertised, if you check the small print, then will say these are max speeds. It depends on how far you're away from the exchange, line quality, etc. if you get near this.

Only a couple of weeks mate is all. Not sure how far we are from the exchange to be honest.

I must look up the fine print but that's a far cry from 120 and I'm less than a kilometre away from city centre Dublin where you'd imagine you'd get a good speed.

I would guess they are running fiber to the node/exchange, but then it's not fiber to your house. The "last mile" issue. Being in a city centre means a crap load of users are sucking off that node. Ask you're ISP if they are "FTTH" ie fiber to the house. Find out if any providers are FTTH . A quick google says Magnet is FTTH to parts of Dublin.

I'm not sure what the alternattive options are in Dublin, but my speed test a few posts above is FTTH provided by our phone company. I pay for 150/150 and consistently exceed it.

Just called VM about an unrelated matter - they offered me their new "Big Kahuna" for £7.75 less than I already pay so I said ok not expecting much. The internet wen off for about 5 minutes, now an hour or so later I'm getting this

just moved house and got fiber.. With adsl I used to get 0.9 Mb/s upload speed and everything would grind to a halt every time the missus uploaded a photo to facebook so quite pleased!

Shame that all I'll end up using the download speed for is reading reddit and rawk like...

My mum and dad took advantage of the latest BT free broadband offer a fortnight ago, their first ever internet. They are getting less than 1 Meg.

I reckon it's quicker to drive to the library and research using Micro Fiche.

It feels like it would be sometimes, especially if my Missus is doing practically anything else on the net at the same time. Only way we can download stuff is to set it going over night, otherwise everything grinds to a halt.

I've been getting horrendous broadband lately from Virgin, with Ping of around 600ms and downloads as low as 0.5Mb/s, with an average of 6Mb/s

With a new Call of Duty coming out next week, I gave them a call to see what the deal was and they casually told me that there would be issues on my line until January 28th 2015

Today has seen things improve, so hoping that continues, but surely I'd have grounds for ending my contract early if they're telling me my service will be crap for 3 months?

Yeah you'd of thought so - you'd definitely have a case for getting some money off I'd of thought.
