So apparently the McLaren issue is aerodynamics, they use the Toyota wind tunnel in cologne, so do force India
So yeah the correlation between wind tunnel and track isn't good.
I think there was something about this a few weeks back when a few of their aero guys got sacked. If I remember rightly the reason McLaren had been claiming to have the best chassis for the past 12 months and blaming Honda for all their problems was because their speed through corners was really good but on straights they were shite. It then came to light that actually they’d fucked their aero and the balance was so far towards having good cornering speed that it was having a significant impact on straight line speed.
That’s not completely absolving Honda of blame by the way, it merely indicates that the Honda engine whilst being bad wasn’t as bad as McLaren were claiming and similarly the McLaren chassis wasn’t as good as they were saying.
I was quite interested to read recently that the Honda engine is now on a par with the Renault engine, this change of engine supplier could be an even more costly change than it already has been when you consider that the Honda engine seems to be developing quicker and all Renaults issues with being unable to upgrade one of the MGU parts. I can certainly see why Red Bull are taking the jump to a works deal with Honda.
