If they splurge £65m on Maguire I will literally die laughing.
I hope you only metaphorically die laughing. Maguire isn't worth it literally.

Remember when they were going to sign Varane and Mbappe and ended up with Maguire and Rebic for £110m.

Taking their spending to £180m. Wonder what Utd will say about spending then.

Their fans were desperate for him though. A friend of mine married a United fan and when they had Van Gaal he was almost in tears one night and praying they would bring Shitcoat in to ''save them.'' From what I was hearing from many of their fans back then, Moaning Arse was the nuclear option. They simply had to have him to get them back where they felt they belonged. Plenty seemed to assume that with him at the helm, success was assured once more. I have to say, though. I'm so glad they have him and we have Klopp. Honestly, Mourinho could turn milk sour. He must suck the life out of his players.

Shows how poor United’s current recruitment policy is.

If they’d identified Maguire as an actual target at the end of the season, they could have probably got him for around £40 million. Or they could have scouted him last season and picked him from Hull for a pittance, instead of wasting loads on Lindelof.

Instead, they obviously didn’t target him after the season finished and are now interested after his World Cup performances and through panic.

I think it's all fanbases rather then just ours. Think it extends beyond football too.

There'll always be people who'll happily spout the regurgitated opinions of uninformed or uneducated media or pundits rather than think for themselves. This will happen whether it be about Liverpool, other clubs, politics etc.. It's why on occasions we see the masses make choices that seem unpalatable even when the facts are presented in front of them.

I think it's more within our fanbase for the following reasons.

Not won the league. Like ever. That's the narrative that's been spew by pundits and rival fans that's been famous and actually has an impact within the fanbase. Like English football didn't exist before the League was renamed! But yes, around 30 year wait for the league title has made fans restless and they don't see it within the context of respective managers and what they've done and the context around them. Rather we start piling up the pressure from Day 1!

Not won anything in a long time. Yes, it's been 6 years, but we've been so close a few times. We're going in the right direction, but we need a trophy, any trophy to take that pressure off really! Until then, the narrative will be on and rivals and pundits will look to exploit that, which our fans may take the bait and pile on more pressure.

Klopp loses all the finals! Now that's another one that's spouted to take a swipe at us. I mean who knows that he has actually won finals before, and faced some difficult opposition in the finals? He lost to Bayern, Sevilla (on the back of 2 Europa Titles in a row), Man City & Real Madrid. Nothing like beating Palace and Ajax in the final and chest-thumping all the way is it?

I feel that our fanbase needs to be smarter and not take the bait emotionally and pile the pressure, but more often than not, they do.

A trophy, any trophy first will shut everyone up. We just need a bit of luck along the way in a knockout tournament with an easier final and we have the quality to do it. Then, we'll get more confidence and support to go all the way in the league.

but but but we spent 75m on VVD, and have to win the league now, because we are big spenders, some dick even tried to incorporate all revenue into net spend to prove his point about how little they have spent

Their net spend is 200 million more than ours. That figure will likely reach 300 million with the amount of sales we are going to make and the 1-2 players he will still buy.

Good article - puts all the all the bs in black and white:

Liverpool v Man Utd: Transfer spending comparison since summer 2016

Team       Total spend               Fees received   Total net spend
Liverpool       £411.55m               £289.65m             £121.9m
Man Utd       £392.55m                £85.3m                   £307.25m

The fact that they got Sanchez and Zlatan on frees on top of 307 million net spend (will at least clear 350 million by end of the summer) and the fact that they pay some of the most ridiculous wages seems to be lost somewhere too.

Sanchez, Lukaku and Pogba are 3 of the 5 highest paid players in the division. The club that pays Sanchez more than what our entire forward line earned put together last season has no right to mope about other clubs spending for crying out loud. Seriously how fucking thick are their fans?

Wages are super important when you're thinking about spending and demanding success. As per most recent accounting figures, United have the highest wage bill in English football, even more than Man City. But poor Jose. Only gets to sign players for 100 million and pay multiple players 300k salaries. Cry him a river, everyone.

Bits from an ESPN article:

Fans, meanwhile, will look at the bigger picture from a United perspective -- results, performances, goals and games. And when United fail to overcome the reserve side of one of the weakest MLS teams and fail to score as happened on Sunday, there will be plenty of criticism.
<snip>

It can't be denied that United's two preseason games so far have been woeful, and attempts to sell the games as a once-in-a-lifetime experience to see Manchester United are wide of the mark. Even with reduced ticket prices, the stadia are half empty. That's set to change on Wednesday for a sellout encounter between United and AC Milan at the smaller 27,000-capacity StubHub Center. The game has been sensibly switched from the hard-to-fill and hard-to-reach 92,000-capacity Rose Bowl in Pasadena.
<snip>

Even though many of the players on the tour won't be first-team regulars, United must do better against Milan, Liverpool and Madrid this month. Any defeat to Liverpool, even in a friendly, stings. Poor performances leave disappointed American fans wondering what the fuss is about surrounding England's biggest club. United got their 2003 tour to America, their first in a couple of decades, so right. This one feels a little flat so far.

I have to laugh at United fans talking about our spending all the time now... while they spend most money back in 90s and early 00s.... but nevermind that

The fact they collectively ignore that we had always had to sell our best players and get shitloads for them... and basically start over after each major sale(s)... They really have no other thing going on against us now than the fact we have most expensive defender and most expensive GK...
Well yeah we do have them, but we also have third most highest sale in history of football with Coutinho to date...

The highest fee they received post Ronaldo was for Ángel Di María, but other than that they mostly always buy to improve their squad, NOT TO REPLACE top class players they sell... this is the one thing most United bitter fans can´t really see or understand :D

by comparing the 5 highest ever fees received we have (mostly had to) sold: Coutinho (2018), Suarez (2014), Torres (2011), Sterling (2015), Alonso (2009) together for £346 million.

United´s 5 highest ever received fees were for: Ronaldo (2009), Di María (2015), Beckham (2003), Schneiderlin (2017), Depay (2017) together for £188,8 milion.

If you compare how long it took for them to collect 5 highest fees in their history... (6 years more to be precise) and what is the difference (not counting the inflation cause it would have been even higher) - £157,2 milion. You have to see in 9 years we made almost double the amount of money United made in 14 years selling the same amount of players...

THAT IS WHY WE AS A CLUB CAN AFFORD TO BUY THE WORLD´S MOST EXPENSIVE PLAYERS, BECAUSE WE NEEDED TO REPLACE THOSE WHO LEFT FOR WORLD RECORD FEES. BECAUSE WE MAKE A LOT OF MONEY BY SELLING + ALSO RECIEVING MONEY AS DO ALL THE CLUBS WHO ARE IN CL FINAL AND PL.

Can United fans reading this finally get it in to their heads :D thanks a lot.
Your points are noted.  Liverpool is a selling club.

Good article - puts all the all the bs in black and white:

Liverpool v Man Utd: Transfer spending comparison since summer 2016

Team       Total spend               Fees received   Total net spend
Liverpool       £411.55m               £289.65m             £121.9m
Man Utd       £392.55m                £85.3m                   £307.25m
The article is good only because it puts the numbers there. The journalist's analysis however is biased towards as it takes little consideration of the huge difference in net spend and in the end basically agrees with Jose lol.

For an example, if the net spend situation was to be more equal to ours it would be like Utd buying those other 2 other players this window for say 80M this season but then having to sell Pogba for 120M, De Gea for 100M, Matic for 40M (generous estimates) - or other players that add up to that amount but still expect to win the title purely because their total gross spend is now higher at 470mil :D. Not to mention we can sell 70M more before this window closes so could take another Bailly and Herrera away from them or something!

What it does show is the difference in quality of business done and that can raise expectations for us, not the pure number of total spend these idiots thrash out. Very flawed logic that lot have...

I predict a long boring season for manutd fans with Mourinho moaning and whining more than ever before. Especially now that we've got some money to spend. Surprise eh, the biggest club in England spending money, boo fucking hoo. The days when we had to sell Voronin in order to buy N'gog are over.

The most interesting thing about Mourinho's comments is the motivation behind them. He is rattled. To argue against his jibe is to miss the point. If he's bringing us up in conversation, it's because he feels under pressure re: Pogba (fee and failure to deploy him well, until now, at least) specifically, and generally, re: criticism of the utterly tedious football his sides play, as compared to any of his three rivals in last year's top four.

Every club is a selling club. Did you just lend Ronaldo to Madrid and forgot to ask for him back?

They both went in high, that's factually correct, both tried to play the ball at height.  Doku with his foot, Mac Allister with his chest.
