It was a dangerous tackle. You cannot go in with studs up like that.

Will this be going to penalties or a replay?

Both go through and will play against whoever they draw as 22 against 11 gives them both a better chance of scoring.

When you watch the replay, DCL has his studs high and catches the player. THEN his leg comes down onto the ball.

He didn't catch the ball first and then his foot goes over the ball to catch the player.

Straight Red for me.

Yeah you can't "shield" the ball with your leg up that high any more. Not if you make any contact with the player.

Looking at the replay of the challenge a number of times it looks worse the more you look at it. He slides in, so he's not in control. He keeps his studs up going into the tackle. He was lucky that he didn't catch the Palace man square on the shin and the Palace man was lucky his foot wasn't planted otherwise that's a leg breaker. It's reckless and could have ended very badly. I don't think he meant any malice, but that's not the point. It was dangerous play.

State of Sunderland trying to make Newcastle fans feel welcomed at the Stadium of Light.

https://www.safc.com/news/club-news/2024/january/club-statement-black-cats-bar

Sunderland AFC acknowledges that a serious error in judgement was made in relation to Black Cats Bar earlier this afternoon.

We apologise to our fans for the understandable concern they have fairly voiced in response and this sentiment is shared by the Club’s Ownership Group and Board of Directors, who have requested an immediate review is undertaken to determine how this process unfolded.

A direct decision has also been taken by the Ownership Group and Board of Directors to return the space to its original state and we once again apologise to our supporters that this was not addressed sooner
We have to change from doubter to believer. Now.

did he actually watch much? every time they showed him, he was head staring at the ground and hands in pockets.

granted, he is like 95 so maybe he was just asleep, or his neck muscles are too weak now to hold his head up for more than 3 mins at a time.

I certainly don't see it being overturned if Everton appeal.  That his foot was that far off the ground with his stoods showing and his momentum moving forwards means it ticks all the boxes.

It was still soft as anything and the overreaction from Clyne was embarrassing - he was barely touched!

Calvert-Lewin has 3 goals in 14 league appearances this season so I don't think he's going to be that much of a loss for them.  They can just select another of their non-scoring strikers and rely on one of their grocks popping up with unlikely winners.

Yeah maybe it’s deserving of a yellow card, I’d still be gutted. But it’s never a red.

He slid in with studs up and made contact with the player, he gets the red card for the intention, he shouldn't be let off with less just because he didn't happen to break somebody's leg,

Had a look at the Palace forum. Hodgson well and truly lost the fans there, they're bored shitless with his football.

Thought they were rancid last night. Everton were just what Everton always are. Well done to ITV for putting that on.

What intention?

It's never a red card and if that was given against us we'd be going crazy, just look at the uproar after the Jones and Mac Allister red cards. It was really no different to Endo's tackle on Norgaard a few weeks ago (studs up, made contact with the player) which VAR looked at for several minutes.

I can't see how people expect VAR to improve when they're condoning these types of decisions yet will scream when any VAR decsion is given against them.

VAR will always be a lottery when it comes to subjective decisions. It shouldn't have the remit to look at that, especially when the ref has already seen it. An off-the-ball incident then maybe. Ref has looked at it in real time and waved play on, then he looks at a freeze frame and gives a red card. Same thing happened with Jones at Spurs, although ref gave a yellow first.

I agree, I can’t see how a VAR officials subjective decision can be considered more accurate than an on-field referees subjective decision based on VAR slowing everything down to completely unnatural speeds and then scrolling between two frames looking for the minutest contact to justify their involvement.

What's with the circular red card he dished out? Haven't seen a yellow yet. PGMOL love playing around with inconsequential periphery bollocks, rather than sort out their obvious failings elsewhere.
