Dutch youth league football linesman dies after attack
« on: December 3, 2012, 10:41:07 pm »

Quote
A Dutch man has died after being kicked and punched by a group of teenage football players for whom he acted as linesman in a Sunday league match.

Richard Nieuwenhuizen collapsed and was taken to hospital hours after he was beaten by three players from Amsterdam club Nieuw Sloten. He died on Monday.

He had been officiating for Buitenboys club, in the town of Almere, and one of his own sons had been playing.

Three teenagers, aged between 15 and 16, have reportedly been arrested.

Buitenboys club chairman Marcel Oost said Mr Nieuwenhuizen, 41, officiated as linesman for the team every week. "He enjoyed doing it. He was a real football man; he was always here," he told national broadcaster NOS.

News of his death sparked shock in sporting circles around the Netherlands.

The Dutch minister for sports, Edith Schippers, said: "It is absolutely terrible that something like this can happen on a Dutch sports field".

Anton Binnenmars ,of the Royal Netherlands Football Association, described it as "too crazy for words that somebody involved in a sporting hobby becomes a victim of this kind of aggression".

Nieuw Sloten said it was "deeply shocked" by what had happened, and intended to ban for life the players found to be responsible, had pulled their team from the league and temporarily suspended all its operations as a club.

"Violence should not be on the football fields," it said.

Madness this. Must have been horrible for his son to witness.

Having played Sunday League, amateur football at all age groups in my life, I really am not surprised that something like has happened, which says it all really and it's very sad.

You can sense violence close to erupting pretty much every week, whether it be aimed at officials or the opposition. Obviously 99.9999999% of the time nothing like this happens, but I've seen it so many times where one wrong decision, one bad tackle, one word said out of turn and all hell can break loose and there is no protection or security.

Some horrible people can play football at this level and there is no way to stop it happening. I know a few people who have been banned from playing for a certain amount of time, but they just continue to do so because the referee won't know, the venue won't know and the opposition won't know. If anything happens, give a fake name.

Dreadful that such an attack should have occurred AT ALL never mind ended in the death of a young father for making what some believed was a "wrong" decision?? I really have no possible words for where this world has journeyed to. It's madness let loose.
There is nothing wrong with striving to win, so long as you don't set the prize above the game. There can be no dishonour in defeat nor any conceit in victory. What matters above all is that the team plays in the right spirit, with skill, courage, fair play,no favour and the result accepted without bitterness. Sir Matt Busby CBE KCSG 1909-1994

Thought the language post wasn't that bad, since it explains the core of the problem for this case, maybe my post after that could have been edited to leave out the specific examples.

Absolutely tragic.

FIFA really need to do more to promote respect for referees and linesmen. Abuse towards referees is tolerated at every level. you see the likes of Rooney and Terry abusing referees every week and you see lads in the park abusing the ref every week. Its a slippery slope which will eventually lead to awful events like this.

There is absolutely no way I would ever be an amateur ref the way things are at the moment.

I don't know what it's like in Holland but I've played Sunday League for a couple of years here in England and pretty much every other week there was some element of violence to it. One bad tackle and all hell breaks loose, flying 2 footed tackles, mouthing off to the ref and linesman and small brawls etc.

Heartbraking that his son was on the pitch. So sad that :( R.I.P.

When I played, 15-20 years ago, there was already much abuse and threats towards refs and linesmen, sometimes even us kids had to run from parents from the opposite team. I remember the wife of our coach got attacked with a knife when played an away game at one point. I guess it got only worse since then.

Absolutely horrendous. To be honest I'm not massively surprised - there is a shocking lack of respect for officials at all levels of the game and assaults on them are probably more common than we realise. One or two on here aren't much better - I was told that referees 'set themselves up for' abuse, violence, death threats, etc. so don't deserve sympathy. That kind of pathetic attitude is all-too prevalent it seems and ultimately can lead to a tragic situation like this (I know he was a linesman but it's the same thing.).

This is absolutely shocking. To kill someone over a disputed offside/throw in/free kick in a Football match. Ludicrous.

Yet more evidence that mankind continues to merrily peddle backwards into the dark ages.

Sadly, having played amatuer Footie since the age of 12 (I'm 29 now) it really doesn't come as much of a suprise that something like this has happened, and that is fucking depressing.

I've seen some truly awful stuff at Sunday league games down the years including a bloke, who having been sent off, tried to run back onto the pitch mid-game and attack the ref with a claw hammer, and a Dad at a youth match who ran onto the pitch and punched a 15 year old lad who he deemed to have fouled his son.

Hope this poor chaps son makes a full recovery. Can't imagine having to witness something like that aged 16. Would finish most people, mentally.  :(
