He looks like he can play in midfield as well. At one point, he brilliantly received it on the half-turn, putting a Fulham player on his arse.

He could be the new James Milner.

What a player to have in the team - exceptional versatility and gives the same level of performance regardless in what position he plays. Perhaps the different aspects of the different positions keep him more focused.

Great again but wish he'd just get his goal so he can stop with the pot shots.

Not watched the game back yet but from where I was sitting that screamer he hit in the first half looked destined for the top corner.

I think we'll see more rotation for the remainder of the season. We could be on track for 63 games if all goes well in the Europa/FA Cup, and the argument is that when we did the same in 20/21 the players were shattered by the end of the season. By the time we hit Paris there was nothing left in the tank.  With Joe more than capable of playing across the back 4 and Bradley and Quansah coming through this season, there shouldn't be as much miles in the legs.

Lovely interview with Sturridge before the game. I think everyone likes Joe.

Nope, that is still Mo Salah.  14 goals and 8 assists at one every 79 mins is still the second best of anyone in the league by far, behind Haaland's 72 mins; the only other 3 who have a goal or assist every 100 mins or better are Cole Palmer (95 mins), Nunez (93), Chris fucking Wood (91) and Callum Wilson (90).  Just because he is this good most seasons, does not mean he is not our best player still this season.

I don’t think with two games a week and the possibility of further injuries he’ll struggle for game time even if he’s not in Jurgen’s first XI when everyone’s fit

Rather gone under the radar how good Joe's been of late.

I'm no tactical expert, but to be it looks rather like Joe's taken on the inverted full back roll from the left in Trent's absence. But, managed to do it without being defensively exposed.

If we had the Man City game next week, I'm not sure I wouldn't pick Joe ahead of Robertson at the moment.
It looks to me as if we have signed another 'average' player. I'll hold back my complete opinion until I see the lad play

Definitely needs kudos for his performances this season.I remember a few seasons when he was seen as a bit of a calamity and a lot (myself included) were saying hes not good enough. Fair play Joe I was wrong.

Whether its the system or his own return to form hes been brilliant this season.

I think he's benefitted from moving back to full-back as well.  The one weakness in his game was occasionally misjudging high balls and getting caught under them or not dealing with them fully.  Less of an issue at full-back than in central defence.

I expect he was earmarked to be primarily a central defender this season but with the injuries to our full-backs and the emergence of Quansah he's only started in central defence once in the league this season (way back at the start of September against Villa).

The track record of our players coming back to their best after serious injuries isn't great - probably the same for most clubs - but delighted to see Gomez do so after multiple serious injuries.

Is he in actual fact... our best left back...?

Like not in a covering for freak injuries to Robbo and Tsimikas way. But in a - he's first choice there when everyone is fit kind of way? And not in a short-term "well he doesn't deserve to be dropped at the moment" way.

Love Robbo, and Tsimikas has done well this season, but this is the most assured we've looked down that side in a few years in my opinion.

I wouldn't drop him for Robertson right now for sure. We've looked a lot better at the back with Gomez there.

But then Robbo bombed down to the corner flag and dinked a lovely cross onto Darwin's forehead for him to head against the crossbar.  Gomez probably isn't doing that.

For me we now have two full-back pairs.  Trent as the inverting right back with Robbo as a more traditional left back and Gomez as the inverting left back with Bradley as a more traditional right back.  Trent and Robbo partnership likely gets the big games.

Gomez could also be the inverting right back and has been a few times earlier this season.

Gomez has put in some really good crosses as well, his crossing has really improved since playing there.
